2024 Paris Olympics men's basketball power rankings: Team USA in own class, but who is biggest competition?

We're ranking the 12 teams heading to Paris later this month as Team USA looks for another gold medal

ad-team-usa-getty.png

The field is set for the men's Olympic basketball tournament in Paris after Greece, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Spain claimed the final four spots through Olympic qualifying tournaments held at the beginning of July. And now that we know how the three groups will shake out when the 2024 Paris Olympics kick off on July 27, it makes sense to size up how these teams rank against each other.

1. USA

Obviously the U.S. will enter the tournament as the heavy favorite, and they've constructed a juggernaut of a team complete with the commitment from Joel Embiid who chose to join Team USA over France or Cameroon. Embiid gives the United States a quality defender to throw at the likes of Wembanyama and Gobert on France and Jokic on Serbia. From top to bottom the U.S. roster is sound, and filled with a good mix of young guys -- Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton -- as well as the grizzled veterans in LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry. The gold will be the USA's to lose as it is at every Olympic Games, and after a poor showing the World Cup -- a fourth-place finish -- there will surely be some motivation from this cast of stars to make a statement.

2. Canada

3. France

4. Germany

5. Serbia

6. Australia

7. Greece

8. Spain

9. Puerto Rico

10. Brazil

11. Japan

12. South Sudan

Group A: AUS, GRE, CAN, and ESP
Group B: SRB, SSD, PUR, and USA
Group C: FRA, GER, JPN, and BRA

The top two in each group plus the two best third-placed teams will advance to the knock-outs.

Kawhi Leonard out for Paris Olympics; Derrick White to Team USA

Kawhi Leonard will not play in the upcoming Paris Olympics for Team USA, which has replaced the LA Clippers forward with Boston Celtics guard Derrick White.

In a statement released Wednesday, USA Basketball implied that Leonard's decision was influenced by the Clippers and Team USA officials after observing training camp in Las Vegas over the past three days.

It would have been the first Olympic trip for Leonard, who missed 12 of the Clippers' final 14 games this past season with right knee inflammation.

Clippers coach Ty Lue is on the Team USA coaching staff. Representatives from the Clippers, including team president Lawrence Frank, have attended practices at UNLV this week.

"Kawhi has been ramping up for the Olympics over the last several weeks and had a few strong practices in Las Vegas. He felt ready to compete," USA Basketball said. "However, he respects that USA Basketball and the Clippers determined it's in his best interest to spend the remainder of the summer preparing for the upcoming season rather than participating in the Olympic Games in Paris."

LeBron James layup helps U.S. dodge upset from South Sudan

There probably will be a movie made about the South Sudan basketball team someday. And the players representing the war-torn young nation added a powerful and dramatic scene Saturday night in a moment the raucous crowd at O2 Arena won't soon forget.

LeBron James made a driving layup with eight seconds left to prevent what would've been an historic upset and Team USA escaped with a 101-100 victory.

Bam Adebayo, U.S. cruise by South Sudan in Olympic basketball

Worrying about which superstar player might not play on a given night isn't Team USA's problem, it might end up the trademark.

This team's unrelenting depth will continue to lead to some uncomfortable moments when the coaching staff grapples with how to manage it all, but it continues to be the Americans' fuel as they work toward trying to take a fifth consecutive gold medal.

Wednesday it was again the engine in a 103-86 win against upstart South Sudan that moved Team USA to 2-0 in Olympic play and punched its ticket into next week's quarterfinals.

The Americans' bench was devastating, racking up 66 points (compared to just 14 from South Sudan's) and going on two key runs that essentially defined the game.

Team USA routs Puerto Rico for top seed in medal round

For three years, Team USA has been planning, recruiting and refining to reach this upcoming week in Paris. And they've aligned things in excellent position to claim their fifth consecutive gold medal.

The team took its final steps before heading to the French capital on Saturday, finishing off Olympic pool play 3-0 with a 104-83 victory over Puerto Rico to clinch the top overall seed in the medal round. That will begin Tuesday, where the U.S. will face Brazil in the quarterfinals at Bercy Arena.

Just sayin': United States, Germany, France, Brazil, Canada, and Australia have qualified for the "final bracket of 8". Serbia still has to play South Sudan later today which will determine the other 2 teams.

Joel Embiid laughs off jeers, leads U.S. rout into Olympic semis

If there's one thing Joel Embiid has learned during the Olympics, it's that the French can boo him but no one here can stop him from doing the crotch chop.

The American center's comfort level dealing with adversity mirrored that of the rest of his teammates Tuesday as Team USA put on a clinic in a 122-87 quarterfinal victory over Brazil. The team is now two wins from a fifth consecutive gold medal and is set up for another meeting with Serbia in the semifinals Thursday.

U.S. survives Serbia with late rally to make gold medal game

cfloroqbduvxq1pxh525.jpg

Ever since Serbia was able to squeeze out an Olympic bid at the World Cup last summer with all-world native son Nikola Jokic resting, the leadership of USA Basketball has been worried about a game like Thursday night's 95-91 Olympic semifinal victory.

No team, no player incited more concern than the Serbians and Jokic in the medal round.

It was the basis for securing the commitment from Joel Embiid to play for the Americans. And to recruit the greatest collection of talent possible, calling on LeBron James and Steph Curry and Kevin Durant to come and secure another gold.

And it kept Steve Kerr and his coaching staff up this week, regardless of the previous blowout wins in these Olympics. It was a nightmare that almost came to life. Team USA was thrashing in the deep end, falling into all the classic traps that lead to historic upsets.

But the future Hall of Famers and the modern MVPs redeemed themselves with a dream comeback and now have left their own indelible mark.

Team USA surged back from 17 points down with a star-studded rally to defeat a valiant effort from Serbia.

"I'm really humbled to have been a part of this game," U.S. coach Steve Kerr said. "It's one of the greatest basketball games I've ever been a part of. They were perfect. They played a perfect game."

Embiid played one of his finest career games against Jokic, delivering 19 points and a fiery push in the second half that verified his place in Team USA history.

"Joel was everything," James said. "Made every big shot."

James delivered only the fourth triple-double in Olympic history with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists and had his hands on the steering wheel of the fourth-quarter push that added another chapter to his amazing career.

Durant made two enormous baskets, a 3-pointer that was part of a six-point possession that was crucial in the comeback. Then a jumper in the final minute that proved vital.

But Curry will have this moment. He scored 36 points, making a numbing 9-of-14 3-pointers and two free throws that sealed the victory. It was Curry at his absolute finest, unstoppable and carrying the U.S. through some dark moments where it looked sure to lose.

"For all of us being superstars and Hall of Famers on our respective teams and what we've all accomplished, the buy-in is there and it's the only way you can do it to win," Curry said. "To come back the way we did, I've seen a lot of Team USA basketball, and that was special."

What a run by Steph Curry these last two games…

As a Cavs fan he’s maddening to play against but damn when he’s on your team like he was for team USA it’s so much fun.

17 three pointers the last 2 games and his last three vs France was incredible over two defenders and fading away.

Just wild lol
I flipped on the end of the game and when he took that shot I was thinking - What the hell? And then he nailed it. Amazing talent!
