Spain overtakes USA for No. 1 spot in FIBA men's hoops rankings

For the first time in 12 years, USA Basketball is not atop the world men's rankings.

FIBA, the sport's governing body, updated its rankings Friday, and Spain moved into the top spot, a sliver ahead of the U.S.

The four-time defending Olympic champion Americans moved into the top spot after winning the FIBA world championship in 2010 and had been there since.

"It's not exactly a new title and it probably can't be maintained for too long, but it's something so unique, prestigious and historic that I feel tremendously proud of everyone who ... contributed to it," Spain coach Sergio Scariolo tweeted Friday.

FIBA's rankings were changed in 2017 to a system that takes results from the most recent eight years into account. That means the U.S. is no longer reaping the benefits of the 2014 World Cup title but is still seeing the Olympic gold medals won at Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo factoring into the rankings. The U.S. finished seventh at the 2019 World Cup.

Spain won the most recent World Cup, plus the EuroBasket title earlier this year. The EuroBasket win was Spain's fourth in its past six appearances at the continental championship, all of those victories coming under Scariolo.

Spain is just 1.1 points ahead of the U.S. men now, leading 758.6 to 757.5.

Meanwhile, at the FIBA world championship...

Following the unblemished run through Group C, Team USA advanced to Group J, where they beat Montenegro, 85-73, before losing to Lithuania, 110-104, on Sunday. Steve Kerr's squad still advances to the quarterfinals, where the United States will face Italy on Tuesday. Despite the loss, Team USA did guarantee a berth in the 2024 Olympic Games by being one of the top two finishers from the Americas region in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Team USA bounces back at World Cup, routs Italy to reach semifinals

If there can be such a thing as an ideal loss, Team USA might have experienced it against Lithuania at the FIBA World Cup on Sunday.

It didn't cost the Americans any position in the tournament -- in fact, it probably improved their draw. But the loss to Lithuania also acted as a "free" focusing moment for a young team that had never experienced such adversity in major international games.

Given a reprieve, Team USA came with more intent and force from the start in Tuesday's quarterfinal, bouncing back at Mall of Asia Arena to oust Italy 100-63 from the medal round.

"Just obviously pissed off from losing and don't want have that feeling again," said U.S. guard Tyrese Haliburton, who had 18 points off the bench. "They're not going to fear us. We got to just play our style of basketball."

Team USA will get the winner of Germany-Latvia, who play Wednesday, in the semifinals on Friday. But Tuesday's other quarterfinal brought other interesting news as Lithuania, which had proved to have a matchup advantage on the Americans, was eliminated as its recent hot shooting went cold against Serbia in a blowout.

Quarterfinals: Sept. 5-6
  • Serbia 87, Lithuania 68
  • USA 100, Italy 63
  • Germany vs. Latvia, 4:45 a.m. -- Wednesday, Sept. 6
  • Canada vs. Slovenia, 8:40 a.m. -- Wednesday, Sept. 6
Semifinals: Sept. 8
Final: Sept. 10

Pathetic that the country where basketball started can’t even compete on the world stage anymore. Yeah, I know these other countries have professionals and have turned the sport into a national soccer style program.

C’mon Man….

Sources - LeBron James, Stephen Curry interested in Team USA

There is robust interest from NBA superstars, including past gold-medal winners LeBron James and Anthony Davis, to join USA Basketball for the 2024 Paris Games, with Stephen Curry also pondering an Olympic debut, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Curry has expressed an interest to play for Steve Kerr, his Golden State Warriors coach, sources told ESPN.

Several players who were part of the 2021 gold-medal-winning team in Tokyo who didn't play in the FIBA World Cup this summer, including Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker and two-time gold medalist Draymond Green, are also candidates to return, sources told ESPN.

Chris Paul, who won Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012, is also considering another Olympic run, sources told ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

Kevin Durant has won three Olympic golds and would be a candidate to play again.

Team USA has done some recruiting of Joel Embiid, who holds both United States and French citizenship, but the Philadelphia 76ers star has thus far been noncommittal.

Joel Embiid commits to play for Team USA, not France, at 2024 Olympics in Paris

The native of Cameroon became an American citizen last September

Barring a series of injuries or changes of heart, the 2024 iteration of the team will be much older and more star-studded than the 2023 one. Embiid is joining a long list of players who have expressed their intentions to play at the Olympics, among them Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Devin Booker, Jayson Tatum and Kawhi Leonard.

LeBron, Curry, Embiid headline U.S. player pool for Olympics

Looking to win a fifth consecutive Olympic gold in Paris this summer, against maybe the best international competition ever assembled, USA Basketball is hoping to lean on veterans and an important newly naturalized American.

LeBron James, who hasn't played in the Olympics since 2012; Stephen Curry, who has never played in the Olympics; and Joel Embiid, who is from Cameroon but became a U.S. citizen in 2022, have all put their names up for consideration.

They were some of the biggest names announced Tuesday as part of a 41-player pool in the first step toward deciding the 12-man team.

The roster could be set as early as May. The Olympics start July 27. Health at the conclusion of the playoffs will obviously play a large role for many players.

The full player pool is as follows:
Bam Adebayo, Jarrett Allen, Paolo Banchero, Desmond Bane, Scottie Barnes, Devin Booker, Mikal Bridges, Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, Jimmy Butler, Alex Caruso, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards, Joel Embiid, De'Aaron Fox, Paul George, Aaron Gordon, Tyrese Haliburton, James Harden, Josh Hart, Tyler Herro, Jrue Holiday, Chet Holmgren, Brandon Ingram, Kyrie Irving, Jaren Jackson Jr., LeBron James, Cam Johnson, Walker Kessler, Kawhi Leonard, Damian Lillard, Donovan Mitchell, Chris Paul, Bobby Portis, Austin Reaves, Duncan Robinson, Jayson Tatum, Derrick White and Trae Young.
