TE Louis Irizarry (official thread)

I guess Irizarry should have gone to Cryami. He probably never would have been arrested there.

I'm not saying he wouldn't have hit anybody, or wouldn't have robbed anybody. I'm just saying he wouldn't have been arrested. Donna Shalala has worked things out with the cops for the 'benefit' of the football program.

The biggest head scratcher to me is how Duane went on and on about what a good kid LI was. I remember the "I thought they were my friends" post and the rightous indignation that followed.

Don't forget Gary H over at BN. He loved him so much he probably would serve his jail time for him. I think what a waste. When these kids came onboard I thought good clean kids, good grades, Tressel guys. Then after LI's first indiscretion Gary H and Duane said totally out of character he is so sorry and will never happen again.

According to Gary H., this situation is not over. LI was released this past week and the family met with JT for numerous hours. He wants to return to tOSU although he does have 4 offers from other major programs. According to Gary, LI has been a workout freak while incarcerated and is up to 255 lbs.

Before anyone freaks out, Gary has said there are numerous hurdles LI would have to clear before being accepted into the University first and even then onto the team. Among those hurdles is a heavy academic schedule to regain eligibility in the fall. Nothing is decided on tOSU's end and everything would be pure speculation at this point.

WOW, although I would love to see the kid succeed and make something of his life. I am not sure that tOSU is the place for him, even with the extra hurdles. I might be just being selfish though because of all the critisism that would come with it, but damn. Good luck LI, no matter how it works out.

Izzy committed two assaults on University property while a student. The felony assault came at a time when he was on University and legal probabtion for the first assault. The notion being floated that the felony assault was somehow excusable because the victim owed Izzy money and would not repay him is not acceptable. If he wants to engage in vigilante justice, then please go elsewhere. The University lawyers will have a hard time signing off on this. What will the University do if Izzy is readmiited and he assaults another student on University property? There could be some civil ramifications for the University at that point. It is not worth the gamble.

I agree. As talented as he may be and although he may have seen the light, I just can't see taking on this baggage with everything going on now. I can excuse the university and Tressel for the past actions b/c they can't possibly watch all student athletes all the time. But this kid has big red flags all around him, and if he commits another stupid act, it wiould be squarely on Jimmy T's shoulders for allowing him back.

he's paid his dues to society... lightning, what if a psychologist (sp?) said he's "a changed man"

I would let him in... and it would be clear (in writing) that if there was one screw up he's gone. It would be great if he could change his life for the better...

Not only has he aleady had a second chance, he used that second chance to commit a similar type crime that was more egregious than the first assault. Again, this notion that the victim owed him money is not an excuse to engage in this type of behavior. If the University readmits him, it does so knowing that Izzy has a history of assaulting students on University property. IMO if Izzy should do this again, it is much more than waiving good bye. It is the University itself that may need to answer to the victim monetarily. I don't see the University lawyers signing off on this. IMO the risk is too great, especially in light of Izzy's past behavior in such a short period of time. I think the lawyers are going to be looking for more than a note from the psychologist stating everything is fine.

Would love to see Izzy in S&G and I want very much to argue he should have another chance - but Lightning is right.

Sure, he has paid his 'debt', and he has plenty of 'opportunities' in front of him - both off the OSU campus and off the football field altogether. When we set these problem athletes up with the exact same situation they had before we aren't teaching them anything about consequences. Would love to read in 15 years that he has gone on to be a teacher or succesful business man. In the meantime let's see what use somebody else could make of that football scholarship.

Reading that a kid who went to jail for beating up other people is a 'workout freak' who has bulked up to 255 isn't encouraging - it is frightening.

or a kid that was scared to death and was trying to send a signal to other mates to stay away.. MAYBE.. just MAYBE... he really did learn the lesson... but LR has very valid points

It never ceases to amaze me how forgiving some folks can be, a la Bobby Bowden and Larry Coker, and so willing to give guys a "second-chance"...guys who just happen to be fine athletes. :roll2:

If Izzy had beaten YOUR ass, or a friend or family member's ass, would any of you still be talking about second chances and dreaming of him in Scarlet & Gray? I highly doubt it.

The day tOSU becomes as "forgiving" as the Miami's and FSU's of the world is the day we will truly deserve to be ESPiN'd as a football factory, who only cares about winning at all costs.

The really unfortunate thing about Izzy is that he chose Ohio State over Miami. That's one recruiting battle I wish we would have lost. God forbid that he EVER put on a Buckeye football uniform again.

He'll get a second chance at being a free man, but he does NOT deserve a second chance at being a Buckeye. As far as I'm concerned, the same goes for Guilford. We don't need thugs to win.

Something I have not heard mentioned

I personally would love to see LI back on the feild but there is something that needs to be added to the equation that will probably keep it from happening. With Gene Smith just coming from a program where an aggressive personality was overlooked until it led to tragedy I don't see him setting himself up for the same kind of thing to happen here. Not only that but I see him avoiding any kind of similar situation at all costs.

This is a tough situation. As a religious guy, I'm sure the forgiveness factor will weigh heavily into JT's decision. I would like to know exactly the terms they have laid out that Izzy would have to follow. I really hope he has turned himself around. Very rarely does the prison system truly "rehabilitate" someone as it should, but let's hope that Louis has had a good long time to think about his situation and realizes that a life in prison is not for him.
