TE Louis Irizarry (official thread)

I'm with L-Rod. I hope he gets a second chance somewhere, but not as a Buckeye. There's no way he should get a scholarship from us.

If he wants to walk on here, rather than accept a schollie somewhere else, I might be OK with that.

But once again JT shows what a class act he is by spending several hours with the Irizarry family. And anyone who thinks he did that mainly because he's hoping to get Louis back into a Buckeye uniform doesn't understand the man.

I'm flawed.. I try to look at these things from a Dad's perspective... plus, there's no cookie so flat it doesn't have two sides...

I can easily understand how the incident with his girlfriend could get out of hand... and with this new twist about the fellow he attacked may have owed him money.. Not that I condone either... just trying to be empathetic... a trait I didn't have at 20-40... but I also went thru college... and involved in situations where 'victims' altered the facts... luckily police weren't involved...

Misanthrope... you could be dead right... but if LI was my son... and I knew more facts (which I don't)... I try to imagine how I'd want someone to help my son... or the facts may lead me to agree that he doesn't deserve any more..

Worthless scum like this punk doesn't deserve to set foot on the OSU campus.

Ya gotta love the ignorance of those who condone using violence because somebody owes you money. Of course, if Marlin Jackson had done this and been admitted back to scUM, we wouldn't care, right? :roll1:

That's like saying that Columbus could be sued because they "let him live there".

That's garbage. He doesn't have to live on campus.

Uh, I think you need to visit campus to attend classes. :roll1:

No we don't.. but he would have to be a student at Ohio State before he could walk on to the team...

I think, like any other person in the world, he should be allowed to attend if he is admitted, and then walk-on like any other student has the right to do...

Then he'll have a shot to light it up like he has the talent to do... but I wouldn't give him a scholarship.
First of all, no one has a "right" to walk-on to the football team. A student can request, or be invited to, but there is no "right" to it.

Second, that's fine, let's let a convicted thug walk-on to our team, then we can be outraged when the media, and fans of other schools, question us for it...a la Willy Williams and Marlin Jackson. :roll2:

Your program either has standards, or it does not. When you start varying them based upon the talent of the player, you no longer have standards. So don't criticize "Tennecheat", "Free Shoes", "scUM" or "scUM South", because once you cross that road, you're just like them.

I don't care if Izzy is 6'5" 260 and runs a 4.3 40, or a fat slob with stone hands, the answer is NO! We don't need fucking convicts to win football games.

Wow, I really have to go with the No's on this one. There aren't many third chances in life and I don't think letting him back on the team sets a very good precedent for other players that may do something stupid. What would Tress say to the next kid that assaults or robs a student? You can't have kids not worrying about the repercussions of their actions.

I must have missed the part about Willie or Marlin walking on to the team... how could I have missed that one...
So if Willy and Marlin were walk-ons, you would give Miami and Michigan a pass? Yeah, right. I could just see the thread now..."yes, but they didn't offer him a scholarship, so it's okay. I'm happy for (Willy/Marlin) and I admire (scUM/scUM South) for giving him a second chance." :roll2:

Of course.. we don't offer felons scholarships.. I'm sure you'll find felons who attend tOSU.. why would we treat LI any differently.
Because when an OSU student gets arrested for weed it's only news to his family. When an OSU student-athlete gets arrested for weed - say a back-up place kicker, for example - it's a national story that reflects negatively on your entire program. I can't believe this needs to be explained to anyone.

It's funny seeing the lengths some people will go to rationalize an athletic talent on to the football team. I'll ask again - if YOU were Izzy's victim, would you still be so eager to bring him back? If he was a marginal player, would you be so eager to bring him back? If your answer to either of these questions is "yes", let's see the rationale you used to get there. If your answer is "no", stop being a hypocritical win-at-all-costs football whore.

All I'm saying is, don't treat this any differently than you normally would, just because you already know about him.
You don't think a convicted violent offender should be treated any differently? So do you also disagree with the National *** Offender Registry?

I have not once said that I think he SHOULD be on the team, so don't put words in my mouth because you're pissed off.
Pissed off? Speaking of putting words in another's mouth...

All I said is that we shouldn't treat him any differently than any other person who would attend college at Ohio State. I said he should be given the same chance to walk on to the team, never did I mention he had a right to do so.
Oh, really?

Gee, I'm sorry Lloyd. When you said "right" I thought you said "right". What the hell was I thinking? :roll2:

I'm a bit torn on this. My initial reaction was, "What the fuck...give him a chance at coming back to the team?!" He committed assault (twice) and robbery. He proved himself to be nothing more than a fucking thug and a punk, and gave the program (along with his victims) a black eye.

Then I remembered seeing a former troop of mine in the hallway about a month or so ago. I was his first sergeant for a couple years in the '98-'00 timeframe. He never got into anything violent, but had a cocky, don't-give-a-shit, know-it-all attitude. He failed to progress in his job training. He was this far (hold you thumb and index finger as close together as possible without them touching) from administratively discharging him. I was more than willing to bounce his ass. IIRC, I think we withheld his promotion (anyone who has been in the USAF knows that you have to be a fairly big fuck-up to not get promoted). Then, he had hooked up with a fine-looking, mature, Army chick (believe it or not, they exist), who was working on her college degree. He and I had some private talks after he showed some signs of growing up. He finally passed his training exams (his 5-level CDCs for you USAF folks), albeit barely. He ended up marrying this fox and was reassigned from Hawaii shortly thereafter. I saw him about a month ago in the hallway, and the kid looked like a recruiting poster. He was now a Staff Sergeant and is preparing for his test for promotion to Technical Sergeant. He was extremely polite and was genuinely glad to see me. We shot the breeze for about 10 minutes before he had to go, and I've bumped into him a few other times in the hallway. The kid has made a 180 and it is 100% real.

Now, what does my above diatribe about my ex-troop have to do with Irizarry? People can, and do, change. I would've given my ex-troop absolutely zero chance in the USAF before he met his wife-to-be. Now he is an excellent noncommissioned officer and a genuinely fine young man. It doesn't matter what causes you to turn your life around, whether it's a woman or having your sorry ass thrown in jail.

The bottom line is what's done is done. Irizarry has paid his debt to society, whether or not a bunch of college football zealots like ourselves think otherwise. There are now only two people that can effect his chances at ever becoming a Buckeye again, Irizarry and Tressel, whether we like it or not.
