I'm a bit torn on this. My initial reaction was, "What the fuck...give him a chance at coming back to the team?!" He committed assault (twice) and robbery. He proved himself to be nothing more than a fucking thug and a punk, and gave the program (along with his victims) a black eye.
Then I remembered seeing a former troop of mine in the hallway about a month or so ago. I was his first sergeant for a couple years in the '98-'00 timeframe. He never got into anything violent, but had a cocky, don't-give-a-shit, know-it-all attitude. He failed to progress in his job training. He was this far (hold you thumb and index finger as close together as possible without them touching) from administratively discharging him. I was more than willing to bounce his ass. IIRC, I think we withheld his promotion (anyone who has been in the USAF knows that you have to be a fairly big fuck-up to not get promoted). Then, he had hooked up with a fine-looking, mature, Army chick (believe it or not, they exist), who was working on her college degree. He and I had some private talks after he showed some signs of growing up. He finally passed his training exams (his 5-level CDCs for you USAF folks), albeit barely. He ended up marrying this fox and was reassigned from Hawaii shortly thereafter. I saw him about a month ago in the hallway, and the kid looked like a recruiting poster. He was now a Staff Sergeant and is preparing for his test for promotion to Technical Sergeant. He was extremely polite and was genuinely glad to see me. We shot the breeze for about 10 minutes before he had to go, and I've bumped into him a few other times in the hallway. The kid has made a 180 and it is 100% real.
Now, what does my above diatribe about my ex-troop have to do with Irizarry? People can, and do, change. I would've given my ex-troop absolutely zero chance in the USAF before he met his wife-to-be. Now he is an excellent noncommissioned officer and a genuinely fine young man. It doesn't matter what causes you to turn your life around, whether it's a woman or having your sorry ass thrown in jail.
The bottom line is what's done is done. Irizarry has paid his debt to society, whether or not a bunch of college football zealots like ourselves think otherwise. There are now only two people that can effect his chances at ever becoming a Buckeye again, Irizarry and Tressel, whether we like it or not.
