OSU tight end Jake Stoneburner is Ashland's favorite Buckeye
BY JON SPENCER ? News Journal ? November 24, 2010
COLUMBUS -- Cathy (Ebert) Stoneburner's background as an Ashland High School cheerleader should raise the decibel level in an Ohio Stadium that will already be rocking Saturday.
It won't be her first Ohio State-Michigan football game in the parents' section of the stands, but it will be the first time in this hallowed series that her son, OSU tight end Jake Stoneburner, is starting.
Get out your earplugs.
"People from Michigan tell us all the time that we make way more out of (the rivalry) than they do," Cathy said. "I love what the team does with its rituals during this week and it's going to be even more exciting now that Jake's in the mix.
"I texted Hope Boren (mother of starters Justin and Zach Boren) and told her 'It's Michigan week.' She texted back, smart-alecky, "Thanks for the reminder.' When we talked to Jake (on Sunday) he had just got out of practice and told us, 'Man, it's like a whole new season.' "
Stoneburner, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound third-year sophomore, tuned up for Michigan by catching three passes in last Saturday's 20-17 win over Iowa. Two of his receptions came on Ohio State's first touchdown drive as the Buckeyes kept alive their hopes of winning a sixth straight Big Ten championship.
Asked after the game if he'd rather beat Michigan or win a league title, Stoneburner said, "Getting the gold pants (the trinket that comes with a win in the rivalry), for sure. We feel like that's the biggest game you can play in college football."

Ohio State tight end Jake Stoneburner has a big day against Akron

Columbus -- With the shadows of a scorching afternoon overtaking the home sideline at Ohio Stadium, Jake Stoneburner spotted a familiar face from years past. Not far away was Jake Ballard, a former Ohio State tight end now fighting for a roster spot with the New York Giants.
Marvin Fong, The Plain Dealer
Jake Stoneburner scores the first of his three touchdowns against Akron on Saturday.
After spending four seasons in Columbus, Ballard accumulated three touchdowns in an offense that seldom targeted his position. In the first game of the 2011 season, Stoneburner set a new program record for tight ends with three touchdown grabs in a 42-0 victory against Akron ? much to Ballard's chagrin.
"He was happy for me," Stoneburner said, "but also surprised I tied his career total in one day."
