You see things differently from me. When a defense allows 234 yards and 13 points (7 of those courtesy of a short field because of a terrible INT), you should win the damn game. Especially when your offense's strengths align with their defense's weaknesses. Instead, the morons that cooked up that ass game plan played into their one strength. This loss was due to the negligence of the offensive brain trust with a hat tip to the special teams (another continual problem under Day). I put this 0% on the defense, who were beasts for 90% of the game, but that's just me.
Not to play devil's advocate, but I don't see how the offensive strengths align with scUMs defensive weaknesses?
The only time this team has moved the ball in the air without a disproportionate turnover worthy throw margin is off heavy play action and high percentage passes that are an extension of the running game.
It's very "controlled", for lack of a better phrase. Howards penchant for early, I'll advised turnovers really makes it difficult to open up the passing game and trusting him to sling it beyond just needing to.
The rebuttal may be to point at stats, but I feel that's a bit hollow without further depth and context.
- scUM's Dline was able to neutralize the perimeter running game and generate TFL.
- Their Dline was able to consistently re-establish the LOS so running at the interior produced runs for no gain or minimal expected gain.
- That further chokes an offense that lacks dynamic QB play as both a runner and passer.
- An average pass defense can now square off with an average passing game and win reps and drives. I'm not calling the Buckeye receivers average, they aren't. The passing game as whole is, but it mostly stems from the QB and OL situation.
I agree with you on special teams. What we saw today was antithetical to Jim Tressel and he's likely disgusted by it. It's one thing to have a shakey kicking game, but tOSU has a near non-existent kicking game.
It cost this team a Natty in 2022, it cost them a win vs scUM today. That is unacceptable.
I'll have to force myself to sit down and watch a repeat of this game to chart plays and work to understand why we went away from concepts that worked. But even then, the ultimate responsibility falls on the Head Coach.
