Perhaps you missed the bolded part of the sentence "the whole day Saturday was set up to simulate the Notre Dame game".

Oh good, some actual football talk.

With 2 weeks left to go, taking a day to simulate a game of that importance isn't a big deal to me. Nobody really believes you need 4 weeks to get solely get ready for Central Michigan. It's not meant to be disrespectful to them, but I'm sure Michigan will be ready.

Never understood why someone who says they were so traumatized by this "crime" didn't want to press criminal charges.

I do, as I know two girls who haven't pressed charges and one who has. A lot of it is due to embarrassment - having people find out, having to face the person, having potential media coverage.

There are also a myriad a ways they respond. One became a public speaker and recovery leader. One girl slept with a bunch of people afterward - it was her way of saying the rapist couldn't take away the decision to have sex from her. One did nothing but became emotion when certain things were shown on tv etc.

Thread on the Detroit Sports Forum discussing the case.

Bottom of the first page is where the topic turns to the allegations. There is one poster who claims to have been on the TSUN school paper at the time & knew Gibbons personally who has a very unflattering opinion of the kicker.

Dr. Douglas Smith also makes an appearance later on (as does a letter he sent to the Mary Sue Coleman). He is the former TSUN prof who is behind the originally linked story.

Someone just re-started this conversation on MGoBlog. So who's keep_em_honest?

Someone there wants the story out.

I have no inside info, but Gibbons was definitely referenced at the time on many UM boards for an alleged rape. He may have been proven innocent or she didn't press charges, but there was a lot of smoke on this years ago.

Hate to see this kind of stuff, no matter the outcome.

yeah, it sucks big time

but what sucks even more is the football-first culture at M. It's as strong as ever and can outweigh the rights of citizens who inconveniently get in the way.

This appears to be at best gross negligence by the UM administration and at worst a cover-up of a rape + intimidation

it deserves media scrutiny plus a legal investigation

I'm not so sure. From all accounts they did provide her with the available counseling & mental health support. If she was unwilling to press charges what could the University realistically do? One area that I could see criticism is that when she finally returned to school she asked for it to be handled through the school *presumably because it provided more privacy) and they stated they were unable to do so unless she filed a criminal complaint. Again that brings us back to whether criminal complaints should reasonably be expected to be handled internally.

That being said, I think that we can all agree that it's a sad mess for everyone. If what the retired prof wrote is true, I pray for peace for her. I'm sure we all would.
