One of the other cool things with the Big Bang is that eventually, scientist predicts it will snap back like a rubber band and collapse on itself. Then another "bang" could start a new universe all over again.

I wonder how many times the universe has already collapsed and exapnded?

Last I remember hearing was that the big crunch was unlikely to occur owing to a lack of matter, or gravity being too weak or whatever it is... instead, the universe will grow cold and motionless.

Donthate - nothing about multiverses (which I believe in) denies a creator... it's just a "bigger" universe under consideration. In fact, if there are indeed infinite universes, a lot of objections to G-d (ie omnipotent v. free will) sorta go away pretty easily.

I did not mean to imply that it did. Some scientists (I use the term loosely) believe it does, but the argument can actually be quite positive towards a Creator.

Bleed S&G,

Your opinions about evolution or quantum physics or anything else aren't the issue. What I was pointing out has to do with science. You can't say "There is no hard proof evolution is true" and expect me not to take the bait. You might as well have said "There is no hard proof gravity is true".

Like I said, not trying to be obnoxious :)

We were talking about televangelists the other day. Anyone here ever watched the "Trinity Broadcasting Network"? They are always asking for money, have all the craziest "pastors" in the country, and especially they have that plastic lady with the crazy hair!

Fair enough.. my communication skills are obviously lacking.

Did my calrification make sense?

You know, I'm getting tired of your anecdotal attacks on religion in general and Christianity in particular, based on crazy and/or venal practitioners.

In college football, we have DickRod Rodriguez and the Michigan Wolverines. But does that mean the entire sport is bad? (Oh, by the way, I guarantee their booster club is at least as enthusiastic about raising money as any televangelist! ... then again, so is ours ... )

Agreed,

JSV,
This was part of what I was saying earlier about the Hostility.

Not one of us disagrees that there are people who deceive people inside Christian circles, but not one of us believes that's the message. I am very much Christian and haven't spent no more time on TBN than it does flipping through while trying to find something to watch.

Talking about TBN is hardly an attack on Christianity. It hardly has anything to do with Christianity to keep on saying to the viewers "send me money your grocery/insulin money and God will bless you ten-fold." But I think it is very interesting (and disturbing, and worthy of ridicule) how they can continue to fleece people.

For what it's worth, I'm an old-school Catholic with a fondness for the sale of indulgences, burning heretics, and the Latin Mass :) (Well, maybe just the last one!)

I am hostile to TBN. I think anyone with a heart/conscience and who reads their Bible carefully would be hostile to TBN. I love reading the Bible (I really do!), and nowhere in there did I read anything about sending all your money to someone who has a special hotline God and God will reward you in return. (This sounds a bit like the Nigerian scam: deposit $20,000 in a Swiss bank account and we will reward you with millions...)

The Jesus in the Gospels preaches amassing treasures in Heaven, not in televangelists' coffers. There is a rich and amazing depth to the Bible that serious scholars have uncovered. How is it making fun of Christianity to make fun of people who abuse it to fleece people out of their cash?

Oh, and I defy anyone to watch TBN and not be creeped out by the plastic lady!!!

It being the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth, let me offer this - I wish there were far more pastors and preachers like Henry Green of MD - a Southern Baptist who accepts and preaches Genesis as a spiritual truth, while telling his congregation that science has it right on the process, and believes in evolution:

Henry Green is a rarity among Southern Baptists. The pastor of Heritage Baptist church in Annapolis, Md., is openly skeptical that the Bible is the literal word of God, that the Earth was created in a few thousand years, and that Adam and Eve were created from dirt. He says that for too long, conservatives have tried to reconcile faith and science by throwing out science.
This weekend, nearly 1,000 clerics worldwide will proclaim their belief that science and religion can coexist as they celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin during events on what has become known as Evolution Weekend.
Believing In God And Science
"Fundamentalists want to take people away from real science and put on some sort of bogus discussion about intelligent design or creationism," Green says. "Well, guess what? I believe God created. But I just happen to believe that the scientists have it right in understanding that creation."
His views haven't made him popular among his fellow ministers. He recalls that when one colleague heard about his views, he began to "witness" to Green.
"He felt like maybe I wasn't a Christian," Green says, laughing. "And he said, 'Well, Henry, if you change your mind, you'd have a lot of friends.' And I looked at him and said, 'Jim, I don't need your friendship that bad.'"
Green says he views Genesis as truth ? about God as creator ? but not as historical fact.

My polemical knee badly wants to connect sharply with the private parts of whatever lobotomized creationist wrote this article for the Tulsa Beacon:

Evolution indoctrination at OU

Here's a small excerpt:

Do things change? Certainly. But species don?t evolve into other species. Dogs don?t turn into cats. Monkeys don?t turn into men.

In fact, even secular scientists are doubting the viability of evolution concerning the origin of life. The laws of thermodynamics and common sense tell us that things don?t get better - they deteriorate.

The biggest case against Darwin?s evolution is the fossil record. There are no viable transition fossils when there should be millions if you buy into his theory.

Where is the missing link? There isn?t one in the fossil record.

Evolution science is not really science but a religion. That is why it cannot stand honest scrutiny or tolerate other views. It takes more faith to believe that men came from monkeys or a primal soup struck by lightning than it does to believe that God created the Earth and mankind in seven days.

Both are religious beliefs. Oklahoma students should be exposed to both theories (including Intelligent Design)...
