It was a very brainless play on his part. It was a blocked punt well behind the line of scrimmage - the only way Arkansas doesn't end up with the ball is if tOSU picks it up and gains a first down, or if Arkansas gains full possession of the ball and then fumbles it back. If he muffs it, it's still Arkansas ball no matter who falls on it in a scramble. And he had 4 teammates behind him closer to the ball than any Buckeye. He definitely should have taken the time to try to pick the ball up and score - I'm quite relieved he wasn't composed enough to realize that at the time.
What would have been the result if the Arkansas player tried to pick up the ball and ended up booting it out the back of the endzone?

My favorite part about the vest bump is that Tressel went from excitement to "oh shit! he's going to knock me over" in about a quarter of a second.

Also the looks on the players faces in the background (especially Jordan Hall) are priceless.

Just to see how they would cover it, I watched SportsCenter this morning to see their coverage of the Sugar Bowl.

The highlights were dominated by talk of how the suspended players were involved in so many key plays. I knew that was coming, they talked about that story for 6 straight days, and tried to act like JT was wrong to play them and foolish to believe their pledges to return, ... blah, blah blah.

Was there a mention of the fact that tOSU tied the record for most BCS Bowl wins all time? (6, a record by itself if deducting 1 vacated win by USC). Nope, no mention of that historic achievement.

But the graphic showing the game stats had a blurb that said:

"Ohio State
3-6 all-time in BCS bowl games"

If that was an honest mistake, it should have been caught. But everybody in Bristol has been bashing tOSU for so long, it probably didn't look wrong to anybody.

Screw you, ESPN. Your agenda is obvious. Not pointing out a record 6th BCS Bowl win is a ridiculous omission from the recap of the game. Showing an inaccurate graphic is pathetic, even if it was only due to ineptitude.

Yup. You have to try and scoop that ball up. It was not a fumble, as someone said ealier. That ball is the Hogs' ball no matter who falls on it. Gotta at least make an effort to pick it up and score. I am sure that the coaching staff will be reminding them of that a lot next year...

Touchback, Ohio State ball at the 20 in that case.

He would have had to boot if for about 30 yards, but if they never had full possession that would have been a safety. Only if they had full possession, and then fumbled it and booted it through the end zone would it have been a touchback.

i just watched that punt play again and i got chills by how big of a mistake this kid made by not going for the TD...there was no one anywhere close to him, i think maybe homan was 10 yards back and finally came into the picture after this kid was already getting jumped on by his teamates...if arkansas scores a TD then obviously he made the correct decision by just jumping on the ball but thank god they didnt score and thank god he didnt take the punt block to the house

I am chosing not to think about it.

I've never liked the spread punt formation because it is inviting the opponent to block the punt. Sure you have three guys in front of the punter instead of one, but you also give multiple defenders a running start at them by not even touching them at the line. Please scrap it and go back to the tighter formation with on upback.

Punts can get blocked in either formation, but one of them seems like you're just asking for it.
