Sugar Bowl - LSU 41, Notre Dame 14 (Final, Jan. 3, 2007)

Honestly, I don't know what it is. I really wasn't raised to take delight in other's misfortune. Really, I wasn't. That's why I'm happy that Charlie appears to be getting over it already...

The thing is: they haven't bottomed out yet. With Quinn leaving and Samaradjihad and Ziwoodyablowmski too it is going to be a long year for them next year.

I think that the suppositions about Weis now asking for more money at Notre Dame are ludicrous.

First, I have heard from insiders that there is TREMENDOUS resentment among faculty and the senate about his salary and contract and that will grow with yet another failed year.

Second, with players that Weis has recruited in most of the critical positions next year, the program will be going backwards. I think it will be a three loss season if placed in the most optimistic light, a five loss season more pessimistically.

Third, Weis doesn't seem to have built really strong relations with University insiders or alunmi. Look up "pride goeth before the fall" and you will see his picture in your encyclopedia next year. His ego is really going to be his undoing.

It is a well-understood phenomena in psychology (i.e. expectancy-disconfirmation theory). Sell woof tickets and set expectations higher than your performance can cash and people will be dissatisfied. Meet those expectations and they will not be pleased but only feel a neutral feeling.

Weis cannot win because he cannot possibly meet the expectations that he continues to set.

I think that the most likely scenario is that the Domer faithful will turn on him and he will fall, and fall hard, within two years. I think it will not be pretty.

Compare and contrast the respective coaches reactions in their Press Conferences post game - subject, the Fake Punt.

First the fellow who called a Fake Punt at 4th and 3 from the 34:
Q. Charlie, can you talk about the decision to go for that fake on the first drive?
COACH CHARLIE WEIS: When they put their field goal safe team on, any time you get past your own 40 yard line and leave their defense on the field, so we had determined the first time we got the ball between the 30 and the 40 yard line, okay, as long as they gave us a balanced front, which they ran on that play, as long as they didn't overload to the right-hand side where we were going to run, we were going to call it. It was a check with me, and they gave us the look that we had practiced it against, and they made a play. But if you're going to put in a play like that, when you call it, the first time it shows up, you're going to run it and we ran it.
So, basically Weis still thinks that was the right call at precisely the right time? No mention of the importance of the element of surprise, nor any questioning of outcome versus expectation.

Now the opposing coach:
Q. Coach, the fake punt early in the game, just your thoughts on that and how pivotal it was for you guys to make that stop and cash in on it.
COACH LES MILES: The tragedy is we didn't get seven. We lined up to kick a field goal -- you're talking about their fake punt?

Q. Yeah.
COACH LES MILES: We kind of figured that they had run that fake several times -- really one time. Coach Peveto does a great job in scouting and they did exactly what we might expect. Prior to that snap we had alerted our guys on the field that it might well be a fake. We played with leverage. Those fakes still have a chance to get out; you have to make a play. Defense played extremely well, that gave us a short field and an immediate seven.
It appeared to us that they might be willing to take those risks, and so he -- the point was made that we had great speed, and if he was trying to let us know that we felt like we had advantages, we listened, and in those instances we were kind of prepared for unusual plays in the kicking game.
Message to Weis - you got owned and put your team in an indefensible position, minimum 3 points, in actual fact 7 points yielded. Clearly they knew you were going to do it, they were prepared for it, they killed it, just as they expected to do. It is as close as a coach gets to saying "dumb move" as you will ever hear in a post-game interview.

How do you make Notre Dame cereal?

Put it in a big bowl, and beat it for three hours.

PS: I've said this several times before, and I'll keep saying it again, this board needs a "I hate ND" banner.

Should JaMarcus Russel go first pick based on last nights performance? He was certaintly better than Quinn.

Well I'll be very sad to see JaMarcus leave LSU as he's one of the most gifted quarterbacks we've ever had but he has a shot at the #1 overall pick. He seems like the type of guy Al Davis would like, big, strong arm. I do wish he'd come back next season because he'd definitely be the favorite for the Heismann.

Based on last nights performance - I would say no. Reason being is that he simply played pitch and catch against a weak defense. I don't know if ND's defense was that horrible all year or not but they looked rusty, unprepared and out of shape. LSU's WR's were weiss open all night.

He had a great year but to draft him in the first round just based on last nights game alone would be a mistake in my opinion. I haven't seen every game he's been in but to draft a guy based on one single performance would be a mistake in my opinion.

He did remind me of Vince Young though last night, he looked very, very good.

I will say this much, I would draft him (based on his numbers and what I saw last night) over Brady Quinn.

\Don't get me wrong, I think JaMarcus Russel is a good QB, I just don't think he's a first rounder with all the talent out there in all the positions in this year's draft. I think he "could" become a starter in the right situation but he needs, in my opinion, much more development. I think he's got all the physical skills though, he reminds me of Vince Young in a lot of ways.
Every article I've read regarding Russell and the draft has him going high, many top 5. After last nights performance, I'd say he passed Quinn in a lot of people eyes. He'd be smart to come out now and avoid injury, or just a letdown in general. All reports have him being pretty athletic and we saw how strong his arm is, so I doubt he'd lose much luster in the combines either.

Gosh! What a great year 2007 is already turning out to be. Ohio State has beaten Indiana on the hardwood to open Big Ten play, the football team is in Glendale as the favorites to win the national title, and Notre Dame and Michigan have both been soundly thumped in their bowl games.

Chad Henne and Brady Quinn have been pantsed before a live, national TV audience while the best QB in all the land is a Buckeye (and a Heisman winner).

I'm getting a little misty eyed just thinking about it.
