Stupid two point conversions (SimpLLLLLe Jim loves 'em, and so does James Franklin)

The season isn't even a week old and we've already seen a few of them. Jimbo Fisher is the latest culprit, and Herbie the analyst didn't see anything wrong with it. :hoke:

Hell, if Mississippi takes the extra point, they are only down 7 points. I know the two point would have made the deficit only 3, but they should only be attempted if it's absolutely needed, or your name is Chip Kelly.

I have seen some downright idiotic decisions with 2-pt conversions, but the latest one may take the cake.

Raiders score a touchdown to go up 15-12, in the 4th quarter. Jack Del Rio goes for 2. Are coaches that obsessed with "typical" football numbers like 17, 21, 24? Inexcusable. I am shocked.

"The card" is all about getting back to the magical world of 7s and 3s as quickly as possible. It gives no consideration to how much time is left on the clock, or the consequences of failing to convert it. It's usually safe for coaches, however, because mediots and fans are generally too stupid to question it.

I once saw Bill Parcells go for two while trailing 14-9 early in the second quarter. That's ridiculous. The conversion failed and he spent the rest of the game chasing that point (failing on another one in the 3rd quarter).

SIAP...2015 Browns vs Broncos. I remember because I was at the game thinking "what the fuck?" It goes down like this...

With 8:00 left, Karlos Dansby picks Manning off and takes it to the house for a 20-16 lead. Then instead of kicking the extra point, they go for two, and fail.

Denver scores a TD and goes up 23-20.

Browns get a FG with 1:30 left in the game that would have won the game but it only tied it and sent it to overtime instead. We all know what happened next. The Browns Brownsed the OT and lost when after securing a Peyton Manning pick in Bronco territory, they thought moving backwards by way of McCown McCowning it for their feeble FG attempt was a good move. Instead, they punted, Peyton got the ball again, curtains.

My take, Baldy McFuckstein probably thought it would be ideal to be up 6 in case Denver got 2 more FGs? Idk but there were still 8 minutes left. Maybe Denver goes for 2 on their TD if Cleveland kicked the XP? Maybe they make it, maybe they don't. We'll never know. All I know, Browns didn't kick the XP, game went to OT, Browns lose.

I guess when you have a garbage defense like Arizona State you chase every point you can, even going for 2 with 3 seconds left in the first half and trailing 14-12.

They deservedly failed.

Can someone explain why you don't go for 2 when you score a TD to go down 9 late in a game? Go for 2 and miss and you're down 9 and KNOW you need 2 scores. Get it and you know you only need a TD. If you kick it to go down 8, then if you score a TD later and miss the 2 pt, you're screwed.

Because if you go for 2 down 9 and fail you just made it a two score game - congratulations for "knowing" it. You just made your opponent happy. That would be the definition of a stupid two point conversion.

You kick the XP and make it a one score game.

Good for you getting a late touchdown to ti.....oh wait, you miss the 2 pt at the end of the game. If you only knew earlier you needed 2 scores, your play calling can change. Woops

And if the you give the defense a two score lead they can play differently and beat you. Not to mention you give them an opportunity to make it a 12 point lead with FG instead of 11, so you have to score two touchdowns. But by all means, keep believing it's better to fail early and play into the hands of your opponent.

It's not complicated - don't go for two until you HAVE to go for two. Why? Because teams convert one pointers much more often than two pointers. :roll1:

Not the thread's intent, but I'll use it to give credit to Mark Dantonio for his use of the 2-point conversion yesterday against Notre Dame. He found money on the first one and then did what that idiot Helfrich should have done with Oregon/Nerbraska- he didn't do it again and used that point advantage to build a buffer the rest of the way. It may have ultimately kept Sparty from being Sparty and blowing the game as ND would have required a 2-pointer themselves to complete their furious comeback. Helfrich, on the other hand, ended up going 1-5 on his conversions and lost by 3 points.

I mean, I guess props to Helfrich for sticking to his philosophy, as idiotic as it may be. I guess.

Helfrich is an idiot. I hope Oregon enjoyed their little five year window of consistent relevence, because it's over. Helfrich did well his first two years with Kelly's leftovers, but they're a pretty average team now that Chip's kids have matriculated.
