the next coach at ohio state will have coached under jim tressel.

I'd like to see Luke Fickell make it up there. But I'd expect him to move on long before Ohio State is looking to replace JT. I would guess that Ohio State's next head coach hasn't even been born, yet.

technically, the "head ball coach" quote in the commercial isn't accurate. His nickname that started in Florida was the "Ole ball coach" and for whatever reason it stuck....

Kinda similar to 'Senator Tressel' or 'the Vest', except we won't hear JT refer to himself by either of those terms....

No, technically it's Head Ball Coach. Even his website says it all:

Coach Spurrier: Head Ball Coach - Home

Notice the HBC in the name and the link to the Head Ball Coach.

Spurrier referred to himself as just a head ball coach numerous times over the years.

Fixed that for you, after his bloody crap comment last week about Ohio State.

Said you really hadn't played anybody that good yet. I can't disagree much. We'll see Saturday.

Like I say, he is more of a fan than a coach in his smack talk. Like him saying the Auburn library burned down, and the real shame was that four books weren't colored in yet. You can't get that anywhere else from a coach. (BTW - he is a self avowed student and admirer of Sun Tzu, and his belief is that if you are too focused on the mad factor you will not play him well - sort of the opposite of what you might think "bulletin board" wise. At the time he said it USC(East) was BCS Number 6, and so I took it as Stevie thinking the Bucks were going to win out, so if y'all met in N'Awlins he was already churning the waters in advance. If you knew his convoluted thinking on smack talk, it was actually a compliment. I mean this! )

Thats not what he said. He implied that the SEC is so tough its the only reason Vandy has 3 losses, if they were in some other conference they'd be 6-0 like Ohio State.

Again the mentality of the typical SEC fan who thinks the worst SEC team>the best B10 team (or any other conferences team for that matter).

Unless we're talking about 2 different episodes of him trashing OSU, he said that after a loss to Vandy all but assured his team will not play OSU this year.

I'm sorry but taking a backhanded swipe at a team you aren't even playing in the post game presser after a loss to Vandy ruins your season is nothing but a lack of class. Tsun Tzu doesn't say you should be an ass all of the time, just in controlled situations.

The Art of War, correct?

Yep. Go figure. Complex guy Spurrier. Easy to dislike and write off as just an asshole, but his ultra competitive persona is always trying to find ways to win, and he does not spend any time on how to look good to the media or opposing fans. He could not care less, and always says "If they like you, you aren't winning enough..."

I'm not going to get into it with you, but quite a few Florida fans have been calling him the OBC for a LONG time.

Personally, I don't give a rat's ass what he, or any other coach has to say. We only hear the stuff that they say to the media, and the media usually decides what we get to hear from that. The interesting stuff is what's going on in the coaches' heads that isn't necessarily being said. And, as actions speak louder than words, it's usually better to see what types of plays the coach calls.

Spurrier's decisions to repeatedly throw deep passes with 4 minutes to go in the game when he's up by 5 touchdowns tells me more about who he is than any press conference will.

Oh no doubt. But the quote originated from Spurrier himself and has been bastardized from there. Hence I noted that the HBC himself maintains the website. On Gameday they often refer to him as OBC, but that's not really how it originated.

I think he's great to watch, on and off the field. And the fact that he's done great jobs at Duke, Florida, and now SC indicates his job performance is high quality stuff.
