During the recruitment of
Alshon Jeffrey, South Carolina head coach
Steve Spurrier told the four-star wide receiver he could keep the same jersey number ? #2 ? that he wore during his high school playing days in Calhoun County. Offensive coordinator
Duane Wages did much the same.
One of the problems with that tack? The number is one of four that?s been retired by the university. The second, and bigger, issue? The man who wore the number,
Sterling Sharpe, seemingly has no intentions of allowing it to happen.
During a radio interview with a Columbia (SC) radio station, Sharpe took the move to unretire his number to task.
?Once they gave me that honor, I don?t see how in the world they would
audition or petition for me to give it back,? Sharpe told
WNKT-FM 107.5. ?I haven?t done anything to add to those numbers, but I definitely didn?t do anything to warrant having it taken down and having someone else wear it.?
Sharpe, who left the school as their all-time leader in receptions, yardage and touchdowns, also told the hosts that his ?guts would definitely be ripped out? if the university were to put his jersey number back into circulation.
Shortly after the Thursday radio interview, Sharpe had somewhat softened his stance, but was still dismayed over this even becoming an issue.
?I?m not beating this horse to death. I?ve said my piece, and I?m done. It?s a situation that I got drug into, this kid got drug into, and I don?t think it?s fair to either one of us,? Sharpe told
The State newspaper.
?There?s nothing else I can do. There?s nothing else I can say. ? In the nicest way that I possibly can, I?m done with it. It?s up to the powers-that-be to do whatever it is they want to.?
While it?s definitely no Kiffin Vs. Meyer, this one could get fairly interesting as the older Sharpe is not known as one to bite his tongue.
