I think he's great to watch, on and off the field. And the fact that he's done great jobs at Duke, Florida, and now SC indicates his job performance is high quality stuff.

Don't get me wrong - I agree that he's a great coach. I just don't think so highly of his character.

Dantonio?
This is my guess, and one that I would like to have. Defensive minded, came up under Tressel, had success at Cinci (and the team he built did a helluva job this year), is having success at MSU.. If Les Miles goes to scUM, i have a feeling Dantonio will be on the list for replacements. Very solid coach.

You can't get that anywhere else from a coach.
Imagine that, I wouldn't want my university represented like that.

Jaxbuck;971864; said:
Thats not what he said. He implied that the SEC is so tough its the only reason Vandy has 3 losses, if they were in some other conference they'd be 6-0 like Ohio State.

I'm sorry but taking a backhanded swipe at a team you aren't even playing in the post game presser after a loss to Vandy ruins your season is nothing but a lack of class. Tsun Tzu doesn't say you should be an ass all of the time, just in controlled situations.
Totally classless, too bad SC won't play tOSU this year, I would like to see JT go schedule these bastards for a home & home.

This should be a good hire for the 'Cocks. VanGorder's name has been tossed around for some head coaching jobs lately.

News briefs: Spurrier hires Falcons LB coach VanGorder

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Steve Spurrier brought in new leaders to fire up South Carolina's defense and special teams. The Ol' Ball Coach put himself on notice to improve, too.

Spurrier hired Atlanta Falcons linebacker coach Brian VanGorder as defensive coordinator Wednesday, one day after adding Maryland special teams wiz Ray Rychleski for South Carolina's special teams.

VanGorder takes over for Tyrone Nix, who left for Ole Miss earlier this month. Rychleski replaces Fred Chatham, who was not retained by Spurrier.
The changes come after a season that started promising and turned sour. South Carolina started 6-1 and ended the season on a five-game losing streak littered with breakdowns on defense and special teams.

Spurrier met with VanGorder on Tuesday and the two agreed on a three-year contract. Spurrier did not want to provide VanGorder's salary, although he's said during the search whomever he hired would earn more than Nix's package of $195,000.

S.C. to give Spurrier bonus if he stays

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Steve Spurrier has another reason to stick around South Carolina.

The university's Board of Trustees approved a tax-deferred retirement package Friday for Spurrier's contract that would pay the football coach $1 million if he remained with the Gamecocks the next four seasons.

The money would accrue in installments of $250,000 the next four years and would be given to Spurrier if he's still at South Carolina by Dec. 31, 2011. Spurrier would forfeit the package if he left the school before then.

Spurrier makes about $1.75 million a year. He was given a one-year contract extension and a raise of about $500,000 after the 2006 season when the Gamecocks finished with three straight victories, including wins over rival Clemson and Houston in the Liberty Bowl.

Article written in a blog on FoxSports.com about Spurrier "Losing It?"

Steve Spurrier losing it? • Straight Talk From the Left Coast - FOX Sports Blogs

This is getting more ridiculous by the minute, and no one is to blame but Steve Spurrier, head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Once again, Stephen Garcia, the #1 recruited quarterback in the SEC (and other elite universities) has gotten into trouble with police.

He and two other players were found with coolers of alcohol outside their dorm room at 6:30 pm and cited for underage drinking.....

It's interesting how he handled this situation.

Angry Spurrier ends South Carolina practice early

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Steve Spurrier ended South Carolina's practice early soon after linebacker Eric Norwood's hard hit on receiver Moe Brown during a passing drill.

Spurrier was angry that some defensive players were laughing and smiling when Brown got hit. Spurrier says his players have to learn to practice as a team and take care of each other.

The Gamecocks coach says the Monday night session got out of hand. He did not have a reason for it. But Spurrier says if the players don't want to practice the way a team should, the team will spend its workouts running.

Breaking news: Hunt fired, Reaves leaving for UT

Written by Joseph Person

Posted on 11.30.08
South Carolina is losing two offensive coaches, although only one is leaving by his own choice.
Steve Spurrier has fired much-maligned offensive line coach John Hunt, the university confirmed Sunday evening. Also, recruiting coordinator/assistant quarterbacks coach David Reaves told The State he is on his way to Tennessee.
Hunt has been under heavy criticism again this year as the Gamecocks struggled to protect their quarterbacks and run the ball. The 46-year-old Hunt coached with Steve Spurrier at Florida and with the Washington Redskins before joining Spurrier?s inaugural USC staff four years ago.
"We appreciate the job John Hunt has done here at Carolina for the past four seasons," Spurrier said in a release. "But we felt like we needed to make a change in that area. He's a good person and we wish him the best."
"I don't agree with the decision, but I respect Coach Spurrier's decision," Hunt said. "I appreciate the opportunity he gave me. I enjoyed my time in South Carolina and wish the Gamecocks the best in the future."
Reaves is joining his brother-in-law, Lane Kiffin, Tennessee?s new head coach, as the Volunteers? quarterbacks coach. Reaves interviewed with Kiffin two years ago with the Oakland Raiders, but decided to stay at USC.
Reaves, 29, a Columbia native who played quarterback at Spring Valley, spent seven years at USC under Lou Holtz and Spurrier.
Reaves said the opportunity in Knoxville was too good to pass up.

Tucker, GA Coach Bans USC From His Players

By Phil Kornblut
The reaction USC's withdrawal of a scholarship offer to committed DB Jonathan Davis of Tucker, GA by his head coach is severe....he is banning Steve Spurrier from recruiting his players in the future. Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote the following story on the paper's recruiting blog.
Steve Spurrier and the South Carolina Gamecocks are ?no longer welcome? at Tucker High, one of the state?s top producers of college football prospects.

Tucker coach Franklin Stephens told the AJC of his proclamation after speaking with Spurrier on Sunday night. It had to do with Tucker linebacker Jonathan Davis, who had committed to South Carolina but was told on Friday that the Gamecocks had withdrawn the scholarship offer.

?The bottom line ? what South Carolina did to Jonathan was wrong,? Stephens told the AJC. ?Coach Spurrier accepted blame for the situation ? [but he] is not going to do anything to fix the situation, therefore South Carolina will not be recruiting any more Tucker players.?

On Friday, Stephens had a ?heated? conversation with Gamecocks assistant Shane Beamer, who ultimately said ?South Carolina had to do what was in South Carolina?s best interests when it came to recruiting,? according Stephens. How did the Tucker coach respond? ?I am ? not even going to say. It was a heck of a phone call. I?ll just leave it at that.? Stephens held off on commenting until he heard Spurrier?s side of the story on Sunday night.

CollegeFootballTalk.com - “JERSEYGATE” BREWING IN SOUTH CAROLINA

During the recruitment of Alshon Jeffrey, South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier told the four-star wide receiver he could keep the same jersey number ? #2 ? that he wore during his high school playing days in Calhoun County. Offensive coordinator Duane Wages did much the same.

One of the problems with that tack? The number is one of four that?s been retired by the university. The second, and bigger, issue? The man who wore the number, Sterling Sharpe, seemingly has no intentions of allowing it to happen.

During a radio interview with a Columbia (SC) radio station, Sharpe took the move to unretire his number to task.

?Once they gave me that honor, I don?t see how in the world they would audition or petition for me to give it back,? Sharpe told WNKT-FM 107.5. ?I haven?t done anything to add to those numbers, but I definitely didn?t do anything to warrant having it taken down and having someone else wear it.?

Sharpe, who left the school as their all-time leader in receptions, yardage and touchdowns, also told the hosts that his ?guts would definitely be ripped out? if the university were to put his jersey number back into circulation.

Shortly after the Thursday radio interview, Sharpe had somewhat softened his stance, but was still dismayed over this even becoming an issue.

?I?m not beating this horse to death. I?ve said my piece, and I?m done. It?s a situation that I got drug into, this kid got drug into, and I don?t think it?s fair to either one of us,? Sharpe told The State newspaper.

?There?s nothing else I can do. There?s nothing else I can say. ? In the nicest way that I possibly can, I?m done with it. It?s up to the powers-that-be to do whatever it is they want to.?

While it?s definitely no Kiffin Vs. Meyer, this one could get fairly interesting as the older Sharpe is not known as one to bite his tongue.

Lawmakers urge Spurrier's football recruits to reconsider attending South Carolina

Flap spawns from possible loss of only black trustee on board

By Jim Davenport And Jeffrey Collins - The Associated Press

COLUMBIA --Black lawmakers are urging black football recruits to reconsider playing for the University of South Carolina because the school could lose its lone black trustee.
State Rep. David Weeks, chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he doesn't think there are enough votes in the Legislature to get lawyer Leah B. Moody appointed to a full term on the 22-member board next month.
She is the board's only black member and is finishing the term of a trustee who resigned before pleading guilty to bank fraud.

"We are asking young athletes to be aware ... there are folks in this state who say it's fine to play ball but not be on the governing board," Weeks said.
He and several other lawmakers, including former Gamecocks lineman Anton Gunn, a black Democrat from Columbia, said members of the black community were calling recruits and their families and asking them to rethink playing for the school.

I miss the Spurrier quotes though, I do confess.
Florida Gators sports news, analysis, commentary - Gator Bytes, a PalmBeachPost.com blog ? Blog Archive ? Steve Spurrier offers unsolicited ripping of QB Stephen Garcia

"Spring practice was, I wouldn’t say, a lot different than most of his
spring practices,” Spurrier said. “We’ll just have to wait and see. It
may be a point that he’s playing the best he can. We may be expecting
too much out of him. I think about that, but if that’s the case, then we
have to get the next guy ready to play because the way he’s performed
thus far, we’re going to be limited.

:slappy: Garcia. Word is the frosh is putting in more film and weight room time than Garcia has.
