Steve Spurrier doesn?t regret leaving University of Florida for NFL

South Carolina?s Steve Spurrier said Thursday that he?s not sorry he left the University of Florida to take the head coaching position with the NFL?s Washington Redskins following the 2001 college football season. Speaking with reporters at the annual SEC Football Media Days, Spurrier, who spent 12 seasons at the Gators head coach and led the program to the 1996 national title, said that at that point, coaching in the NFL was something that was very important to him. ?I love Florida and I always will,? he said. ?But I?d been there 12 years, and there?s something about a 10-, 12-year stay. I?d been there 12 years. At the time, I thought I wanted to coach in the NFL five or six years and that?d be about the end of it. But it?s sort of funny how you keep coaching and you feel kind of the same way you did five or six years ago.? Spurrier, who coached two season for the Redskins, struggled at the professional level, going just 12-20 before resigning on Dec. 30, 2003. ? GatorCounty.com

Strange but true....if Helen Hunt gets run off by the Poodles, Spurrier becomes the Dean of SEC Coaches, being at USC East longer than any other SEC Coach at their respective institution. (His Giggityness at Ole Piss has him if you combine his time with the Piggies)

Anyone have a quick handle on the length of Big-10 coaches at their programs?

Joe Paterno- 46 seasons.
Jim Tressel- 10 seasons.
Mark Dantonio- 4 season this year.
Brett Bielema- 6 seasons.
Danny Hope- 2nd season this year.
RR- Third season this year.
Bill lynch- 4th season this year.
Pat Fitzgerald- 6th season this year.
Tim Brewster- 4th season this year.
Kirk Ferentz- 11 seasons.
Ron Zook- 5th season this year.

This was from memory, so there's room for error on the specifics, but I feel confident that the general area is correct.

Off the top of my head, Ron Zook began in '05, so this would be his 6th season. Bielema started in '06, so this would be his 5th season.

NCAA investigating South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C.(AP) -- South Carolina received formal notification Thursday that the NCAA is investigating its football program.

The letter of inquiry doesn't specify any potential violations, but could signal weeks or months of uncertainty for the team.

The NCAA has questioned South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders about an agent-hosted party in Miami. Saunders and starting left tackle Jarriel King were among several players asked to move out a Columbia hotel after questions were raised over unpaid bills and the rates the players were being charged.

After practice Thursday, Spurrier had to confirm with an athletic spokesman the school had received the letter, then said he had no comment on the investigation.

I can't believe that this is the first investigation into a Spurrier coached team. I'm not saying that I think that he is dirty but it just amazes me that this is his first. Winners are always under a microscope more so than under-achievers. Media is always looking more closely at big time programs.

What amazes me is the coincidence that:
1. multiple SEC teams are simultaneously under investigation.
2. UGa is missing a key player from their game against Spurrier's team who discovers one of his own is now also under NCAA investigation.
3. People think the NCAA COI is getting information from the "media" who are ratting out "big time" SEC programs.

Gamecocks suspend QB Garcia

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's Stephen Garcia was suspended indefinitely from the football program, less than two weeks after the quarterback guaranteed he would not get in trouble again.

Athletic director Eric Hyman announced the suspension Wednesday.

"Stephen has exhibited behavior that is unacceptable for one of our student-athletes," he said. "Therefore, he has forfeited the privilege to participate in any football related activity until further notice."

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said the suspension would last through the spring semester and his status beyond that would be determined at a later date.

"If he's back, he's back. If he's not back, it's really the same thing as a guy getting hurt, a guy going pro or whatever," Spurrier said. "Players come and go as we all know. This instance should have never happened, but it did. So this is where we are."

Spurrier would not go into details of what caused Garcia's fifth suspension - and second this spring - since he arrived on campus in January 2007.

Spurrier said he, Hyman and University President Harris Pastides were involved in deciding what should be done with the Gamecocks most experienced quarterback.
