Star Wars (May the Force be with you)

I was just reading through some of this threads recents posts and several of you mention taking your daughters to the film. I'm not a father but I remember how cool Vader was to me growing up, just a memory now as I'm currently 35. I think many of the males in this thread can relate to seeing Luke or Vader as larger than life. But, after I saw the film the first time one of my first impressions was what an awesome job they did with the female lead "Ray". Her casting was perfect, her character was written excellently, and you totally root for her within the first five minutes of meeting her character. After I left the theater I thought to myself how cool it would be for the younger girls in the audience to have such a stronge female character. I get that gender doesn't exclude a girl from liking Vader/Luke or a boy from liking Ray but I think you get my point. I can easily understand why many little girls might be hitting their little brothers this Christmas with light sabers.

Thought it was solid. A good first movie. Really seemed similar to A New Hope. Thought Ray was a great character. The Fin character has promise, but I can't say I was thrilled with the actor portraying him.

Guess I'll wait to discuss it any further to make sure every one has seen it.

Saw it today. I enjoyed some nostalgia that was in the film, plus it was good to just see Star Wars in the movies again.

The story itself had titanic sized holes in it. I was expecting more there. The planning to attack starkiller base was particularly irksome to me. "Let's do some stuff over here and here and presto, attacko" weak.

Kind of gave it the Marvel treatment as well. I found starkiller much less menacing than either deathstar, which is shouldn't have been. At least we only have a year and a half until 8.

I try to overlook that stuff because it winds up being a crutch to enjoying almost any action film.

What bothered me most was Kylo Ren's ability to have mastered the same Dark Side of the Force technique most commonly attributed to stalkers in slasher films, which is to teleport to a point in the distance where he'll be in front of the people that are running away from him.

That fucking ticks me off.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he has the super speed and jumping that we saw in the prequels. Just likes to make it look like he teleports. On the other hand he looks like the kind of guy that throws fatties in holes and tucks his dick between his legs so who knows.

Is anyone discussing the fact
this supposed dark sider, trained at some point by Luke Skywalker in the ways of the force, and now under the tuteledge of Snope, was bested in a light saber duel by a guy who had no force ability whatsoever and a girl who had, at best, 3 hours of experience in using her new force abilities...........Oh, and the fact neither of them had EVER USED A LIGHTSABER BEFORE THAT DAY, but were able to hang with, and best, an experienced Dark Lord who I assume had some LS training.

That's what pissed me off

Hey, Luke was deflecting laser blasts from the training remote on the Millennium Falcon with a blast shield covering his eyes like five minutes after they took off from Mos Eisley the day he received his light saber from Obi-Wan. I'm guessing it's pretty easy.
Rey was actually shown throughout the earlier part of the film as being an expert melee fighter with a staff, so the leap to light saber combat isn't as great as it was for a whiney po-dunk moisture farmer like Luke who had got his ass kicked in five seconds by the first sand person he came across.
