Star Wars (May the Force be with you)

It's not difficult to understand why the prequels suck...

Star Wars was about heroes sneaking into a fortress & freeing a princess from an evil sorcerer.

Phantom Menace was about mediators brokering a deal between bureaucrats involved in a trade dispute.

At least it did give me one of my favorite Darth Sidious quotes

The biggest mistake of the prequels, other than Lucas sitting in the director's chair, was Episode I, in that the story goes back to a little 10 year old Darth Vader. Not only did this contradict everything in the first trilogy, it made the film too cartoonish because of the emphasis on the innocence of childhood youth rather than the angst of adolescent youth.

If Lucas had taken the last two movies and split them into three, had Anakin introduced into the galactic struggle as a teenager, and had the Clone Wars being fought throughout all three movies it would have been a much better story.

Of course, I still wish Return of the Jedi had followed its original plot line in which Luke overcomes Vader, but only by turning to dark side and replacing him as the Emperor's Sith apprentice; thus leaving the hope of the galaxy on the other Skywalker (who was not suppose to be Leia) who would then be sought after by Luke in Episodes VII-IX and would eventually bring about his redemption and combined they would defeat the Emperor. Since Return of the Jedi makes this plot impossible, I have no idea what outline Lucas has created to make future movies.

It's from the book Skywalking: The Life And Films Of George Lucas. Now, its probably been 12 years since I read it, so I might be confusing a few things (in light of the Dark Empire comic series by Dark Horse)--I only say this as I tried to find a source I could link, but only found interview snippets from Gary Kurtz, that certainly paint a different picture, but not exactly as I described

I'd have to find a copy of the original book to see if my memory is serving correctly.

I guess I'm just one of the few. I was watching Attack of the Clones earlier tonight. People treat it like Battlefield Earth. I don't see it.

I've already posted this:

Now you guys need to watch this series:

Personally I'd like them to be done with the skywalker arc and instead make 6 movies of the video games the "Knights of the Old Republic". I freaking loved those video games

It also featured the single most intense light saber duel of the entire series.

Unfortunately it then ruined any future dramatic build up by killing off Maul (like a bitch).

The way I remember it being told by Lucas during some interview (in the late 80's)...

Ep 7 was to focus on Luke searching for (and finding 1 or 2) pupils to begin rebuilding the Jedi order & Leia's work in the New Republic. Then 8 would have Luke willingly turn to the dark side...with the spoiler being that he did so because he realized it was the only way to bring balance to the Force before turning back somewhere in Ep 9.

Like you that memory is old & fuzzy and I've never seen the interview pop up again.

From the rumor mill...

Disney has a leading candidate for the writer (or one of the writers) for Episode VII, and it's Michael Arndt. He doesn't have a long resume, but what is there is really good. He wrote Little Miss Sunshine and was one of the writers for Toy Story 3 (He is also a writer for the Hunger Games sequel, but we of course don't know how that has turned out yet). So we already have a big plus, a guy that can write a story with good structure and compelling/likable characters. He supposedly already has an initial draft, albeit only 40 or so pages so certainly nothing anywhere near complete.

Those are really good. He also does Star Trek TNG movie reviews that are really good (the Star Trek character that shows up and asks questions in the Star Wars reviews is a reference to those reviews), and they have a website where you can see all his reviews including the third Star Wars review.

http://redlettermedia.com/

They don't really do many Plinkett reviews like the Star Wars or Star Trek reviews and instead do a thing called Half in the Bag. It's ok, and really just the two main guys from Red Letter Media just talking about movies they reviewed. Although they did some Prometheus stuff that was funny (I posted one in the movie thread).

Anyway, if you have time and want a good laugh, watch the Star Wars reviews and possibly the Star Trek ones if you have seen those movies.

Not really. The only reason being that I don't really want a dark, moody & overly complicated Star Wars.

At it's heart Star Wars should be fun pulp action. In all honesty Joss Whedon would be a better fit (although that would mean an uber female jedi minor character getting more screen time than makes sense).

I wonder if a nerd like Kevin Smith, would be a good choice. He would definately know the genre.
