Nooo! George Lucas Makes More Changes to Original Trilogy

Originally, Darth Vader just stood and watched the Emperor electrocute Luke with lightning bolts before coming to his son's rescue. Not anymore. Now, right before Darth Vader comes out of his daze, lifts up the Emperor, and tosses him to his death, the Dark Lord of the Sith yells a helpless "Noooo!"

He also changed the noise when Obi Wan scares away the Sand People, and the Ewoks now blink.

I didn't mind the deleted scenes being added in the last time he screwed with the movies. Those at least added something (although the whole "Greedo shot first" edit is laughable). These changes are change for the sake of change. They don't add anything and tick people off. Maybe someone will synch the original soundtrack to the Blu Ray movies and undo some of this useless crap.

I'm thinking about buying a used LaserDisc player and the original 1993 pressing of the Trilogy on 9 CAV LaserDiscs and then pretending Lucas didn't fuck with the series after that. The LaserDiscs were only 30 minutes per side, so changing discs sucked, but they were widescreen, had THX, but were otherwise un-fucked with. That set is about the only way to get the originals the way we all probably remember them, but with the A/V quality expected today.

The alternative would be to go back to 1984 tech and get an RCA CED player and the Selectavision pressings of the trilogy. The Star Wars CEDs were time compressed (sped up about 2-1/2%), but the first press of the original Star Wars CED was made from one of the nine original 70mm theatrical prints. A buddy of mine in grade school had the Empire Strikes Back CED. We watched it after school at least once a week for a solid year.

There were 2 disc DVD sets that included both the new version and the original version of each move in the original trilogy (it was a limited time release). No need to go for laser disc. Sadly, the only high def alternatives are enhanced versions of the 480p movies or rips from a television broadcast that essentially up scaled the picture. Hopefully at some point they will do another limited release of the original theatrical releases on blu ray.

edit: Here is what one of them looks like (A New Hope Version)
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Two-Disc-Widescreen-Theatrical/dp/B000FQJAIW"]Amazon.com: Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (Two-Disc Widescreen Enhanced and Original Theatrical Versions): Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, David Prowse, James Earl Jones, Phil Brown, Shelagh Fraser, Gilbert Taylor, George Lucas, Marcia Lucas, Gary Kurtz, Rick McCallum: Movies & TV[/ame]

Of course the soundtrack is stereo instead of 5.1, and it's in 4:3 with letterbox (which is easily fixed with the zoom feature on most new tv's).

As you can see by the price, they are still rather popular. New ones go for about $40.

I just Lucas is just trying to get everyone numb enough to his edits that he can start sneaking Howard the Duck footage into the SW films.

As long as it's the Duck boobies scene, I'm cool with it.

Prior to Limited Edition release were a number of bootleg projects based on the 1993 Definitive Collection LD pressing (which is generally considered to be best quality of the LD releases) to DVD.

You can find a good run down on the various versions here. I have Moth3r's PAL (more scan lines yay!) transfer & both TR47/Cowclops versions.

You can find comparison screen shots of the various transfers (including the official release) here & here.

Unfortunately the official Limited Edition release by Lucas of the original/theatrical/real versions of the original trilogy were actually copied from the same source (That's right the 'official' release were merely 2nd gen copies from LD!) and while they were slightly better than the top bootlegs the difference wasn't that great.

The bootleg/restoration/preservation movement was culminating with the *X0 Project but unfortunately the guy running it ran into severe health problems & was unable to continue.

If you're interested in fan projects attempting to create the highest quality transfer of the original movies your best bet is to check OriginalTrilogy.com. The forums there were once the best source of information on the various efforts.

*So named because the source Pioneer HLD-X0 which was widely considered to be the best consumer player ever produced.

I'm a sucker for aviation and WWII history, so I'm stoked.
Lucas is one of the writers.
