Stan Drayton (Head Coach, Temple Owls)

Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Either we're going to compete for titles every year and accept the things that come along with that, or we're not.

People are entitled to feel however they want about this, but it's this sort of stuff that also wins championships. Was it shady, especially re: Weber? Maybe. Will it happen again? Probably.

Turn a blind eye to what goes on if you must, but you can't go crazy over a 'ship and then be vehemently against a few things that appear dirty on the surface. At least to me that's hypocritical.

Do I feel bad for Weber? Only if he was lied to. Committing to a coach is a bad decision on any kid's part. At the end of the day, Mike will receive a great education, play for titles, and have a legit chance to play in the League one day. I think he'll be ok.

stealing this from the weber thread

As Birm was saying on Twitter, no one's hands are clean here. Michigan promised Weber that he would be their only RB recruit... he wasn't. Weber told the OSU staff that he wasn't going to take an official to Michigan last weekend... he did. OSU wasn't entirely forward to Weber regarding the Drayton situation. The whole thing feels kind of weird to me.

I agree it doesn't feel right but unfortunately there's not much Drayton can do to "clear his name".. outside of call records, plane tracking etc.... also unfortunately we'll never know the whole true...

bottom line not everything is black and white with recruiting.

Wish him the best of luck

Day after signing day or Jan 18, 2016, it still means the recruit isn't spending his 4 or 5 years with the same position coach. If a recruit expects a position coach to be there for all of his playing days, then he's pretty clueless (and selfish) about the coaching progression.

Best of luck to Stan.

As others have said. If you're committing to a program solely to play for a single coach that isn't the Head you're already making a mistake.

I don't think Mike committed solely because of Stan, but it can't be good for a kid to enter a program with that feeling of distrust.

It's a bad situation, one that seems wholly premeditated, but it's somewhere in the gray area that big time college football often lives.

I'm not sure how a situation like this can be avoided. Jobs will become available between January-March in the NFL, and good coaches almost always move up unless they're lifers. Sometimes the timing isn't great, but that doesn't change the fact coaches will be offered positions. ND lost their DB coach less than a week before signing day. They were leading for a safety, which was the only real position of need, and as a result the kid decided to go to Wisconsin instead on signing day. The coach could have been offered the job next week though, who knows, that's why a kid should never commit for a coach. You never know when their name will be called, and they'll have to make a business decision for themselves and their family. It's hard for kids to understand that sometimes, but they'll understand once they're older.

Oh, I understand and I'll say it doesn't have the best feel due to the timing, but in the end and I think they ought to understand coaches move on to bigger and better things. Urban will probably have a talk with Mike and Stan will probably give him a call if needed as well.

I really don't like it if we told Weber that Drayton would be there next year. That shit just doesn't fly with me. Now the secret visit does mitigate our culpability here as well...he almost did not come here because of it. If we knew he was leaving immediately and lied to Weber about it, I am not ok with it. I can see everyone's arguments but I just don't want to stoop to that.

Man, it can't be this difficult to just admit Ohio State didn't do something right, can it?

I'm not saying this is an "All In" or "Not All In" situation, but this is completely disappointing to me. I look at it like when a family member does something that you aren't proud of- you don't stop loving them and unless they repeatedly do something immoral, you'll generally stand by them to the end. I still love Meyer, love Ohio State and love the football program. I hope this does not become a normal practice at the University.

The roster management I can handle to an extent. Meyer knows the roster situation and the writing was unfortunately on the wall for certain players like Bogard with multiple ACL injuries, and Reeves who couldn't quite get cleared for play week after week (and he did/would have played so that's not an easy 'ship to give up)...or even a guy like Dodson that had nagging injuries. Injuries and transfers due to depth/opportunity are going to happen to every coach. Meyer has a pulse on things and signed accordingly. This isn't some late summer cuts.

In the same vein, Meyer has a pulse on what his assistants are doing. A coach leaving THE day after Signing Day? That does not happen everywhere and does not need to happen everywhere. Not a move to be proud of at all. If anyone asks, I will have no defense and at the least Ohio State fans should be aware that the number of stones to throw at others are a couple less than they were a month ago. Maybe we should have never been mocking others to begin with. Were we right then and wrong now? Or misguided back then? If I hadn't just worked 12 hours, I'm sure I could dig up some lovely, less flexible, reactions to similar situations on the board.

Who needs Family Friendly Vegas Suggestions when there are perfectly good contortionists right here on BP?

You guys can write paragraph after paragraph explaining why it's ok, but in my experience, if it feels grimy, it probably is. This feels grimy.

It doesn't feel grimy to me.
If it was a HC and/or sweeping changes on that side of the ball maybe... but assistants move around every single year.
In 4 years the only coach we can expect to still be here is Urban...
