Spring Weight Loss Drive

I wish you all the best.
You know one gallon of water weighs almost 8.5 pounds.
When you start out a lot of what you lose is water.
If you lift then you may be adding muscle and weight loss will not be as noticable.
I go by the wedding ring and belt loop test.

If you are a big ugly, like me, your weight can fluctuate quite a bit. I bounce around between 245 and 260 depending on travel and exercise more than anything. Dieting is a difficult, short term solution in most cases. Walk, jog, ride a bike, just move and you will see benefits.

All bets are off after age 40-45. Even if you eat right and exercise you're still going to die.

I have the same problem. All the TV experts talk about emotional underling issues. The only issues I can find is I like to eat until I'm full.
I spent years trying to put on weight, then when my metabolism slowed down and I wasn't very active anymore... I still ate the same.

My weight loss drive actually started at the beginning of May. Since that time, I am down 14 pounds towards my printed goal of 20. I have revised my goal from 20 to 45 lbs by Thanksgiving. I want to see if I can hit my high school graduation weight. The football program is actually helping me. Every time I read the BNs posters' opinions on the latest incidents, I am motivated to getting back on the treadmill and letting my frustrations out. The endorphins are wonderful, legal things - and free to boot!
Some of those posts may turn you into a bulimic, which is another way to lose some weight.

The primary issue with dieting is that too many people yo-yo diet with the latest trendy, fad diets and find it impossible to make a given diet a lifestyle choice. The worst part of these fad diets, which Atkins and South Beach being the top two trends right now, are that they work by simulating famine conditions so that your body is forced to burn fat, but at the same time you lose mass because the body will also burn muscle. The sure way to spot the fad/yo-yo dieter is the jiggly triceps, something which is most commonly seen with middle aged women. The other issues with Atkins and South Beach are that they condone eating a rediculous amount of fish, which are loaded with contaminants, and encourage sweetened alternatives for sugar, such as Splenda and NutraSweet, which are actually worse than real sugar.

I wouldn't say that there is any "easy way," but maybe the path of least resistance would be to consider the Pritikin diet, which is easier to follow for life, and get a pedometer and start a 10K Step-A-Day program (approx 5 miles walking per day). Both of these steps were mentioned by Roger Ebert in his review of Super Size Me, and incidentally Ebert has lost over 80 lbs with these two changes alone. Most notably, these are two simple steps that can be utilized by those who are approaching such an unhealthy weight that even mild exercise is uncomfortable, painful, or too exhausting to sustain over the course of even 30/45 minutes.

My personal mantra in changing my diet can really be traced back to Dr. Joseph Mercola's (a noted nutritionist, though his dietary/wellness suggestions are sometimes even more extreme than Dr. Atkins) list of the 5 worst foods you can eat. I used to eat all 5 regularly. It's now been approx 1 month that I've sworn off the "5 worst foods" and my energy level is as high as it's ever been since I was a teenager, I sleep better, and I've broken my dependancy to caffeine. The most notable change, aside from my waist line and loss of 15 lbs, is that I haven't had a single headache in over a month and I'm not nearly as moody as I used to be.

The Five Absolute Worst Foods You Can Eat

1. Doughnuts - fried sugar and white flour. "nutritionally speaking, eating a doughnut is one of the worst ways to start off your day. It will throw off your blood sugar and won't stay with you so you'll be hungry again soon. You are better off eating no breakfast at all"

2. Soda - 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories per can. "Studies have linked soda to osteoporosis, obesity, tooth decay and heart disease, yet the average American drinks an estimated 56 gallons of soft drinks each year. Plus, drinking all that sugar will likely suppress your appetite for healthy foods, which pave the way for nutrient deficiencies."

3. French Fries - "Potatoes are bad enough when consumed in their raw state, as their simple sugars are rapidly converted to glucose that raises insulin levels and can devastate your health. But when they are cooked in trans fat at high temperatures, all sorts of interesting and very unpleasant things occur ... I am fond of telling patients that one French fry is worse for your health than one cigarette"

4. Chips - "Most commercial chips, and this includes corn chips, potato chips, tortilla chips, you name it, are high in trans fat ... the high temperatures used to cook them will potentially cause the formation of carcinogenic substances like acrylamide, and this risk remains even if the trans fat is removed."

5. Fried Non-Fish Seafood - "Seafood is loaded with toxic mercury and shellfish like shrimp and lobsters can be contaminated with parasites and resistant viruses that may not even be killed with high heat. These creatures, considered scavenger animals, consume foods that may be harmful for you. Eating these foods gives you a quadruple dose of toxins--trans fat, acrylamide, mercury and possibly parasites or viruses"

See my previous post. You are going to die anyway. Moderation is a good thing. Skip buying the edger and do it manually. A donut once and awhile won't kill you but I have to agree on the soda/pop angle.

It is a good thing mudbugs aren't seafood.

You're preachin' to the choir.

I was fearful that the Tim Hortons and Red Lobster in Lancaster were going to have to close down once I adjusted my diet.

I went to Meijer yesterday ... I actually knew which vegetables were on sale. :( I never, ever, in my life thought I'd say, "Ohhh honey! Let's stock up on bell peppers!" :)

I switched to baked tortilla chips several years ago. They're much better for you. If you're used to the salty, greasy chips, they may seem bland at first. That's what the salsa is for. Dip them in hot salsa, which is mostly peppers and tomatoes, and is very healthy.

Sometimes my whole dinner (like last night) is a pint of hot salsa and baked chips. If you can't find hot enough salsa, cut up your own habaneros up and add them. I have yet to try this with Red Savinas, as I haven't found them in a store yet.

Doesn't salsa have a ton of salt already mixed in with the vegetables?
