This one still really hurts.
The crowd was a factor, SC got a quick pick and TD but we did'nt fold, we out played them. The simple fact is we out played them but didn't win. It is so frustrating. It feels a lot like the PSU game last year, but much worse.

Any loss is hard to swallow, but it is really hard to take at home. Hopefully the team can use this as motivation and win out. I would love to get a re-match with SC in the Rose Bowl. It will be interesting to see how this young team reacts to a tough loss the next few weeks.

I love how people (moron sports fans and select media "pundits") were claiming that USC was going to blow out Ohio State before the game

then Ohio State comes out, plays a good game and arguably should had won

but will these same people give Ohio State any credit for playing a good game? [censored] no

its because USC is "weak this year"

comedy

Taking off the S&G tint glasses for a second, ANY team starting a true freshman QB in his 2nd game going into an opponent's sold out house is rightly viewed as "weak" - at least in that respect. The success USC has the rest of the year will determine the long term way that game is viewed. Had Ole Miss not finished strong and won its bowl game punking Texas Tech, our right to be in the BCS game might have been questioned more than it was. People like to compare wins and losses. Always have. Long way to go yet, so let's wait to see how the USC season goes. I bet they beat Cal and lose in some shocker like always. But they will finish highly, and so that wil reflect well on you.

well the point is

its a massive flip flop

before the game USC was going to steamroll Ohio State because they have superior talent

now USC is "weak"

Maybe I'm not listening to or watching the right media outlet, but I'm not hearing anything about a weak USC. Are they down a couple notches from their typical perch? Sure, but that doesn't mean they're not good. Overall, I've probably heard 50/50 on the positive to negative perceptions of how OSU performed. I don't find that to be horrible at all.

Please don't take my sediments wrong, the Silver Bullets are back. That performance saturday night was one of the best defensive performances that I have seen for a long time out the Scarlet and Grey. I thought we would give up a lot more points than we did, but D-line play was stellar, the linebackers were very admirable, and the d- backs showed up and stepped up.

I have waited until now to post some thoughts/observations from the game...so here goes

  • First and foremost our defense played their asses off...the entire DL deserves major props for their performance...I am interested to see how our pass rush continues throughout the season
  • DT push was very impressive...Simon is strong as an ox
  • Barkley was not asked to make a lot of plays...without having watched too many USC games it seems like they had significantly fewer drop back plays...did they really even look down field?
  • WR play was mediocre...I would really have liked to see us take a chance down the field but i understand why we didn't (field position battle and TP's accuracy)...
  • Small was used more as a decoy than anything...Dane is solid on those slants...
  • Why didn't we use the TE's at all? I think there was one bad throw to Ballard that I can remember
  • Torrence played very well...i know Amos was in and cant remember any bad plays by him
  • Chekwa shut down Williams...very impressive again...especially after he torched us last year...but as i mentioned earlier they didnt take too many chances
  • Boom is a good runner but is not the same back as Beanie...we need to stop running the same plays we ran with him
  • One of the most impressive things I noticed was the play of Andy Miller...he stood his ground on a big stage...
  • Boren is a manimal
  • Brew played well enough
  • I really like Browning as the RG
  • Cordle's penalty came at a very bad time

  • Now for the big one...TP...He wanted this game to be won or lost in his hands and got his wish...I dont question the play calling..in fact I remember being very impressed with all of the different looks and formations we were throwing at them...The problem was the execution of the plays...there were certainly receivers open who were not thrown to...there were situations that he threw and should have ran and vice versa
I guess it really comes down to this...The success of the next 3 years (this year included) will come down to TP's ability to grow and develop as a QB...Whether it is making the right reads quicker or improving his accuracy he really needs to grow...

With that said he is only a sophomore in his eleventh start of his career...he did not have the benefit of playing in a pro style offense in high school (Barkley)...simply put he didn't have to be to succeed...he was clearly a superior athlete who took over games...

For those calling for JT's head...PISS OFF!!! I am not gonna go into stats about the number of B10 Championships or wins vs scum or any of that...the talent that this coaching staff is bringing in is truely impressive...

That's all of my rant...Go Bucks

As much as I thought the success of this team would hinge on Pryor, I'm not so sure it will now. We almost beat one of the best teams in the country with Pryor playing an (if we're being honest) awful game. Our defense and special teams are so stellar that he may be able to ride off their accomplishments by making a play here and there, much like Krenzel. Krenzel was a good player but he just wasn't needed to take over games and I'm not positive Pryor will need to either. Will that ensure success if he doesn't? No, but I don't think Pryor has to be half of what we expected him to be to win it all. I want him to be that player but the rest of the team looks far more capable than I expected them to be at this stage.

Daveeb, when you say 'I-formation' what set are you referring?
300px-I_formation.svg.png

We are set to run in this formation. Playaction can be sold well in this formation. Simple drop back and dump off passes to Herron, Saine, or Ballard can be executed in this formation. Short passes to the WR can be executed in this formation. Pryor can run the option in this formation. We can play power football in this formation. We need to use this formation or single set back on first down.

I know that Jim Tressel is trying to show the world that Terrelle Pryor can be a QB at the NFL level. But, to be honest, he's a true sophomore. Last year, he was asked to hand the ball off to Beanie, run the ball, and occasionally throw a deep ball to NFL-ready wide receivers. He is still extremely raw. Baby steps are required. He needs to learn how to manage a football game before attempting to become a gunslinger. If he can do that, he will get a job at the next level and Ohio State will win football games. That's why he came here.

What Tressel is doing right now is equivalent to what bad NFL coaches, the kind of bad NFL coaches who lose their jobs after four years, do to 1st round draft pick quarterbacks. Maybe I'm wrong. You certainly can't fault Jim and Terrelle for their lack of effort. They are putting their hearts into what they're doing. But, while that is touching, achievements are what matter.

We will win out.

A screen pass would of been nice out of any formation Saturday night. Two games vs USC and not 1 single screen pass. You would think Tressel would run more considering it is a low risk high reward play.

Well, I do recall one screen pass against USC in the 2008 game. The legality of the play was brought into question by the officials and by the announcers due to the fact that the blockers were downfield. However, the referees later cleared up that there was no flag on the play due to the fact that Herron was behind the line of scrimmage when he caught the pass. It went for a 12 yard gain. I guess you could call it a power screen pass. I thought that it was our best offensive play of the night from a design standpoint and it helped set up the Ryan Pretorious field goal.
