Not sure where you're getting that. The only mobile QB's to have success recently were Dennis Dixon(the Heisman front-runner before his injury) and Vince Young(the Heisman runner-up). They've played great against guys like Locker, Masoli, and Juice Williams.

I remember Brady Quinn tearing off a 60 yard run and praying for USC to face Troy Smith in the National Championship game...then they played UCLA.

I think we all know what happened in that game. 9 points with a National Championship game on the line. Interestingly, Brady Quinn and Patrick Cowan were the oppositions leading rushes both games (B Quinn 11 for 74 and P Cown 10 for 55).

Needless to say, Chad Henne was not Michigan's leading rusher in the bowl game.

The only game I remember from this list was the 2005 ASU game. SC was pathetic in the first half. It looked like they were waiting until half time for the coach to make adjustments. This game sticks out in my mind as an example of players lacking heart and coaches winning with schemes (instead of people). Also, there was a little issue about questionable hits and QB concusions that affected the outcome of the game.

Do you notice something about this list? It is all conference games. The media dubs SC as a team that plays great in big games. I think SC has tells and tendencies that can be exploited. I think OSU will do a considerably better job of exploiting these tendencies this year because of the addition familiarity.

So when SC loses a close game, you see that as a lack of heart to play in close games. And when SC gets down early, even when they come back and win, you see that as a lack of heart. I think you just see what you want to see.

The only dirty QB hitting from the 2005 ASU game that I remember is their LB hitting Leinart 5 yards after the play.

As for whether OSU gains familiarity which allows them to have the success that Pac-10 teams have had...Here are how previous OOC opponents have done the second time around:

2001 KSU: W 10-6
2002 KSU: W 27-20 (at KSU)

2002 Aub: L 24-17
2003 Aub: L 23-0 (at Aub)

2003 BYU: L 35-18
2004 BYU: L 42-10 (at BYU)

2003 Mich: L 28-14
2006 Mich: L 32-18

2003 Hawaii: L 61-32
2005 Hawaii: L 63-17 (at Hawaii)

2005 Ark.: L 70-17
2006 Ark.: L 50-14 (at Ark.)

2006 Nebraska: L 28-10
2007 Nebraska: L 49-31 (at Neb.)

I think you went right to the heart of his argument.

I'm convinced you are onto a deeper truth here.

Let me test your thesis:

Ok, but neither is Oregon State last year, or Stanford or Oregon from 2007, or Oregon State and Ucla from 2007.

None of you are taking the most crucial statistic into account The last time we scheduled a home/away with USC the results were as follows:
1946 @USC
tOSU:21
USC:0
Final record of the season for tOSU (4-3-2)
1947 @ tOSU
tOSU:0
USC:32
Final Record for tOSU (2-6-1)

Clearly these games can't be ignored when discussing this one!:wink2:

Our last home/away with USC was 1989/1990:

09-23-1989 Los Angeles, CA
USC 42, OSU 3

09-29-1990 Columbus, OH
USC 35, OSU 26

OSU finished 8-4 in 1989 and 7-4-1 in 1990. USC finished 9-2-1 in 1989 and 8-4-1 in 1990.

OSU and SC have nearly identical records, NC's and such over recent history. Let's compare and contrast for arguments sake and try to bring out points about heart and commitment.

USC consistently has more talent. OSU does more with less. OSU has more heart.

OSU disciplines players. UCLA provides handicap parking passes. Methomps - FIFY

USC looses games to inferior foes. OSU wins those games. OSU has more heart.

OSU looses to USC at USC without their best player on the field and playing a true freshman quarterback. No Test.

I know that I am a homer but if a USC kid and a OSU kid were both applying for a job I would hire the OSU kid because of the values and teamwork he learned under Tressel. I would assume the USC kid is a punk from the University of Spoiled Children.

I am blessed to be a OSU fan. Tressel has encapsulated my core values and manifested them on the football field. Watching Tressel win, in the manner that he does, validates convictions of right and wrong, work ethic over privilege. SC deserves Pete Carrol and the nation deserves SC. For me, I hope to live up to the values of OSU and Tressel. I make no qualms in expanding the scope of the game between OSU and USC to represent my Ohio Midwest values vs California glitz. I feel the Rose Bowl being played in Pasadena is a sham and a gift to USC and this trip to the Shoe is a rare chance to right this wrong.

Does "Illinois 28, Ohio State 21" ring a bell? And it's "loses", dip[censored]...

BCS-bound Illinois was not quite on the same level of inferiority as some of USC's in-conference upsetters, though of course your point stands that even OSU is no stranger to the upset loss.

Smith......please don't take this the wrong way, but after reading your post, I'm not convinced that you thoroughly understand the values that Coach Tressel and OSU are attempting to implement within his players and the students.

Coach Tressel stands for humility over just about everything else, and your post (quite honestly) was anything but humble. Maybe you didn't intend for it to come across that way, but I found it to be a little arrogant and full of very, very broad assumptions. I think it's good to want to have solid core values, but saying something and doing it are two different things.

USC is a phenomenal football team, and Coach Carroll is as good as they come. This OSU football team has a major challenge ahead of them come September, and they are going to have to put in a much, much better effort this season if they want to prove that they can hang with one of the best programs in the country. I think this years game will be interesting, because both programs have some big question marks.

Last season, we new we had a talented football team. But mentally, those OSU seniors beat themselves before they even set foot onto the field in L.A., that's just my opinion. USC was arguably the best team in the nation last season, especially defensively. I would have put my money on them over both Florida and Oklahoma, but that's just me.

It will be fun watching how our young guys can develop and how Coach Tressel and his staff will find ways to utilize and maximize each players potential. This should be a good one!
