Game Thread Southern Cal 18, at tOSU 15 (Sept 12th, 8 pm, ESPN)

I'm having a tough time seeing us winning this game, I think that in general USC has better coaching and better athletes than we do. Yet unlike last year, I'm really looking forward to this game. I think it's because I just love to see the 'Shoe rocking for big games, regardless of what happens.

The keys in my opinion are hanging with them early (the crowd noise is one of our biggest weapons, we can't let them take the crowd out of the game,) being mistake free on offense and special teams, and stopping the run. If we can shut down USC's running backs (all 15 of them) and force Mr. Overconfident to make decisions and throw the ball (especially if we can get pressure on him,) I think we can take them down.

I wouldn't put money on the upset, but OSU has pleasantly surprised me before, and I want to believe in the guys. Go Bucks!

IF Ohio State can get pressure without blitzing I like their chances.

If they don't and they need to bring a 5th or even a 6th guy to get pressure, Barkley will cut them up with a bunch of short and quick passes.

I agree with the first sentence. The second is not a given, IMO. Committing extra blitzers will open up areas of the field, but there are a couple of things that could limit Barkley's effectiveness.

One, OSU's blitzers will be the fastest that MB has ever seen. If they have a clear path to him, they can be on him before he even finds a target. Even if he gets the ball off, a defender in his face (and the realization he is entering a world of pain) could cause some errant passes. Whether they're in the dirt, off target, high, or whatever, it only helps our purpose. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing some wounded ducks floating over the heart of the defense.

Secondly, if USC runs the same passing scheme as they did vs. SJSU, the routes were very quick and safe, but also predictable. Barkley looked to be locked on a primary receiver most of the time. I'm sure OSU's defenders have those plays memorized by now. Blitzer in Bark's face + DB jumping the primary route = Ohio State's ball. MB will also be facing a much bigger D-line who knows how to get their hands up. Rob Rose is due, I tell ya! I do expect USC to run a more varied passing book than we saw last week, and I do expect MB to have some success in the short passing game. Limiting YAC will be crucial, and I think that's something our D does well. There may be stretches where it looks like MB is carving up our D, but those may be cut short by our D returning the favor with bad intentions.

Fuck this guy. Let's kick his ass up and down the field, then he can get together with Kingsbury, Gesser, Dorsey, Tate, Morelli, and Henne; and they can all have a good cry while they talk about how they all thought they were hot shit until they ran into the Silver Bullets.

Agreed. Against San Jose State, according to this hilight video, Barkley seemed to roll out and throw off play action alot.
Trojans, Buckeyes offer a showdown of QB stars in making: Matt Barkley, Terrelle Pryor - cleveland.com

I hope our fast ends can contain him.

The most comforting thought I can think of is that I seem to remember that Justin Zwick looked very good when Ohio State played Kent State. If my memory serves me correctly, he was like 15 of 17 passing.

Jeezee the kid is a freshman and we will beat him like one. He threw short and outside against SJ because he can't be effective throwing in the middle or deep. Their running game made his play action effective and their D put the game away.
Barkley isn't a savior yet and won't until next year and he can credit the whole rest of the team for any success he has this year.

Heyward and Gibson will both have to have big games, and I expect Williams will be in there a lot on long downs if not more as a stand up pass rusher. I not worried about Gibson, that dude is a beast, but i'm not sure if Heyward will be able to bring as much heat. Hopefully.

Gotta disagree with you , our whole front 7 has to have a big game.

That play action game has been a staple of the USC offense for ages. They love to run that little roll out out of an offset i and hit the fullback or a tight end that's come across from the other side of the formation and whom always seems to be wide open. Just in that video theres not a single time you see it run where the easy dump off isn't there (he just doesn't always choose to go for it). You go back and look at the tapes from the Leinart and Booty days and they did the exact same thing all the time. Now last year they actually slipped the fullback out and had him run a deep pattern and he got by Freeman for their first score. We were most likely expecting him to go get the dump off so Marcus tried to take away the short inside and the Havelli got by him for the bomb

I'm torn over whether that's the truth, or that's what Carroll wanted us to see. Watching MB's HS tape, he certainly has an arm to throw all over the field. Now, whether he can make multiple reads against a good secondary in real time, that remains to be seen.

Agree. I will add that Heyward will be an asset in defending the run. He plays contain very well, from what I remember; plus he covers a ton of area with his size. Gibson plays very responsively too, when he's not on an all out rush. Both those guys can be very effective in containing USC's running game. On obvious passing downs, Nate Will is the man. He'll run up Barkley's back, and be chillin on the sideline before MB realizes it's time to punt.

Reading through this thread, its almost eery to see everyone buying into Barkley after one game of his entire career. Kind of sickening. The kid is good but damn! ESPN is putting the Kool-Aid out there, no need to drink it.

Barkley has shown his first mistake by running his mouth and telling OSU fans to "bring it." That right there should tell everyone where he stands as an unexperienced player. The kid will find out quickly Saturday night just how fast blue chip junior/senior defensive players are. Say what you want about the defense he practices against everyday. The difference between a USC self-scrimmage with Barkley and going live against OSU - He wont have that protecting black jersey on.
