I grew up in Columbus and Worthington. However, I've lived in the Cleveland area since college, which now means Shaker Hts (was in Hudson and Cuyahoga Falls too). It's been very interesting living in Columbus and Cleveland for around the same amount of time.
1. First, Cleveland is a big football town. No doubt, we love the Browns up here and hate the Steelers, Bengals, Ravens, Broncos, Raiders, whoever....
2. That being said, it doesn't come anywhere near Columbus. I have some friends who have been Cleveland-ites their entire lives, and take great offense to being told their town isn't as passionate about football as c-bus. They think they're in-touch with reality, but the truth of the matter is they're clueless. I took one of these guys to the 98 Michigan game, and he hasn't argued with me since (he hasn't been man enough to admit he was wrong, but it's a start).
3. Cleveland hates "losing" to Columbus. Sure, there were plenty of parties on Jan 3rd, 2003, but there was a hint of jealousy. No question. It's like watching your best friend get a promotion.
Anyways, growing up in Columbus, I went to 2 Buckeye home games in the 70s, 60 in the 80s (that's right, I went to EVERY home game in the entire decade), and a couple dozen since then.
Bottom line, I think it's impossible to grow up in Columbus and NOT be a Buckeyes fan. It is possible to grow up in Cleveland and not give a rat's ass about the Browns.
