Some BCS facts for your SEC friends

I maintain that our bottom tier would be successful against your bottom tier. Our bottom tier SEC teams seem to regularly beat "top" SEC tier teams, and I think that this occurs so often by virtue of their squad's overall athleticism, in a manner different than - say - the Big 10, where it is rarer for your bottom dwellers to knock you top teams off.

Statistically, I think such upsets are more regular in the SEC than the Big 10, which IMO supports the overall strength of the SEC.

If this were true you would expect to see middling and bottom SEC teams come up with at least occasional wins against top tier teams from other conferences.

The middling and bottom SEC teams...

-Bama 14 vs FSU 21 neutral site (FSU 2-3, Bama 4-1 in conference)
-USC 21 @ UNC 15 (UNC 1-3, SC 3-3 in conference)
-KSU 13 @ Auburn 23 (KSU 3-2, AUB 4-2 in conference)
OkState 14 @ UGA 35 (OKS 3-1, Geo 4-2 in conference)
-Mizzou 38 @ Ole Miss 25 (Mizzou 3-1, Ole 0-6 in conference)
-USF 26 @ Auburn 23 (USF 1-2, AUB 4-2 in conference)
-L'ville 34 @ UK 40 (Louisville 2-2, UK 2-3 in conference)
-MSU 13 @ WVU 38 (WV 2-1, MSU 2-3 in conference)
-Cal 45 vs UT 31 (Cal 2-3, Ten 3-2 in conference)

are beating equals at best and are more often than not, losing to comparatively inferior teams. Georgia over Ok State and Auburn over Kansas State are the two best wins for the lower teams in the SEC and that isnt saying much. The best SEC OOC win is LSU/VT and that is completely offset by SEC contenders Bama and Tennessee losing to FSU and Cal. Especially if Bama plays hard against LSU this week.

You keep using that word -- I do not think it means what you think it means. :)

Inconceivable!

Nonsense to you and me but you know good and well things like that are said and fully believed by a large percentage of the average SEC fanbase and national media.

All I can say is, "stats?"

While the idiots in any fan base tend to be the most vocal, I suspect that it is the unique situation of last January where every SEC team that played my Gators did better than y'all - that made some people conclude what is untrue using admittedly faulty logic. That - and the beat down of Notre Dame by a very good LSU squad - when coupled with the annihilation of what most Big -10 fans insisted was the number 2 team in the land by USC skewed the argument towards the SEC for one season. Yes, I know the outcomes of two other bowl games, which proves our point Jax.

We both know evaluating teams is not that easy, and that comparing common opponents is just about worthless as a true indicia of ability.

IOW, it just seems like it to you sitting in Jacksonville after that epic defeat whilst living among the heathen:biggrin:

Kart - the only way I know of to settle it is to have a top to bottom, head to head, conference with conference battle.

Ain't gonna happen, no matter how much we use up the bandwidth

Here are the facts (through 10/20) I haven't factored last week's games in yet......I'll update later tonight but for now I have to catch a plane....

Conference against the traditional BCS Schools
SEC 5-5 .500
Big Ten 9-4 .692

However to be fair:

SEC Opponent W/L record 61-26
Big Ten Opponent W/L record 18-41

That's right. When I was your age, television was called books. And this is a special book. It was the book my father used to read to me when I was sick, and I used to read it to your father. And today I'm gonna read it to you.

Has it got any sports in it?

I heard a different conspiracy theory regarding the Big Ten rankings in polls... apparently the ACC theory (as described by VT radio hosts) is that more voters live in Indiana/Ohio/Michigan area so an undefeated OSU gets more "benefit of the doubt" than an undefeated BC.

The AP voting population is skewed towards the Great Lakes, but proportionally, there are more Div 1A programs in the Great Lakes area. All 11 Big Ten teams, all 13 MAC teams, 4 Big East teams, 1 Big XII team, 1 C-USA team, and Notre Dame all have a footprint in the Great Lakes region. That's over 25% of the entire FBS/D1A group in a 10 state footprint. 8 teams just in Ohio.

BC would get the "benefit of the doubt" if:

1. The New York/New England media didn't wait until after the World Series was over to talk about college football like the rest of the country.
2. When you get the national spotlight, don't stink up the field for the first 56 minutes, even if you do have your "Heisman Moment" in the last four versus the prevent defense.

By the way, ACC-loving media ... the ACC sucks! It sucks. Sucks Sucks Sucks.

That could also be an issue. Just a wee bit.

Mighty strength of the SEC

I didn't find a thread on the overall strength of the SEC, so if one already exists (I'm shocked there isn't one), then please merge appropriately.

Anyways, I have a "The SEC is all-powerful" stat of the day: Auburn (currently one game out of first in the all-powerful SEC) lost to South Florida (who currently is tied for last in the Big Least).

Things that make you go hmmmmmm....
