I'll be surprised if it's not Mariucci.

1. But Mariucci left his heart in San Francisco, High on a hill it calls to him...

2. On the bright side, Michigan State goes off our schedule for two years every so often, but Michigan has to play them every year.

3. And of course, we know that's the REAL Rivalry Game.

Michigan State still sorting out coach search

Associated Press

While some schools are gearing up for a bowl run or to play their chief rival, Michigan State is trying to figure out who will coach next season.
The university has not conducted formal interviews since firing coach John L. Smith last Wednesday. The Spartans are looking for their ninth coach since 1973 -- the most by any Big Ten school.

Some on campus want a coach with ties to the school, and the candidate who seems to have the greenest roots is Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur.
He played at Michigan State from 1983 to 1987, finishing his career as a captain the last time the Spartans played in the Rose Bowl.
George Perles hired Shurmur in 1988 as a graduate assistant and he stayed on the staff until 1997, also working for Nick Saban. Shurmur's stock might have improved on Tuesday when Perles was elected to Michigan State's Board of Trustees.
Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, a former Saban assistant, is another possible candidate with ties to the school.
Two early campaigns appear to be running out of steam. Perhaps too much has been made of Steve Mariucci's interest in coaching at Michigan State, where his best friend, Tom Izzo, is the basketball coach. And, it seems that Butch Davis is more interested in the opening at North Carolina.
Some at Michigan State hope the school looks closely at coordinators from major programs, perhaps such as Bo Pelini or Gene Chizik, defensive coordinators at LSU and Texas, respectively.
After passing up an opportunity to hire Urban Meyer four years ago, when he was at Bowling Green before going on to Utah and Florida, the Spartans may be receptive to another young coach who is nearby. Brian Kelly has turned around Central Michigan's program quickly after winning two straight Division II national titles at Grand Valley (Mich.) State.
One outside-the-box possibility is Michigan defensive coordinator Ron English, whose profile and reputation has risen by helping the second-ranked Wolverines stay undefeated.
"That would be fun, wouldn't it?" Michigan coach Lloyd Carr responded this week. "Well, Biggie Munn, I think he's the winningest coach in the history of Michigan State. He coached here for Fritz Crisler. I can remember Bill McCartney when he was an assistant here expressed an interest in that job, and it just made a lot of people very angry. But the truth is it's a great job. There are a lot of people that would love to be the head coach there."

The Sparty fans have been wondering when Basketball season starts since early October.

I just can't see Saban coming back after the way he left. He really pissed off the Spartan faithful with his late night flights to LSU on the University plane. Stranger things have happened though, maybe he didn't burn that last rope on the bridge.

No shot at Davis now with the contract in place at NC. Pelini is an interesting choice and is certainly due for a shot at a head coaching position.

I still think Mariucci is the man. Rumor has it he was in Grand Rapids at the Lowell vs. Muskegon playoff gaming talking to players.

I agree with Mili that there MSU can get the talent. They always seem to pluck some good talent out of OSU.

Izzo: Mariucci won't consider MSU

Spartans hoops coach says best friend won't take job

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Don't expect to see former Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci standing along the sidelines at Spartan Stadium, according to his lifelong friend, Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo.

The Spartans are interviewing candidates to replace football coach John L. Smith, who is being forced out at season's end. Smith has a 22-24 record in his three-plus years with Michigan State and is 4-6 this season.

Mariucci, fired by the Lions 11 games into last season, had been mentioned as a possible successor. Izzo said that won't happen.

"He just felt the timing was not right for him between family and the NFL," Izzo told The Detroit News on Thursday. "I think he still has a point to prove there."

Izzo and Mariucci became close friends growing up in Iron Mountain, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. They attended Northern Michigan together in the mid-1970s. Izzo said he and Mariucci often talked about finding a way to work together.

"It's like this was our chance," Izzo said. "It's a little sad for me."
Izzo added: "Michigan State never offered him anything in any way, shape or form."

The Spartans have interviewed Central Michigan coach Brian Kelly, Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong and Louisiana State defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, the newspaper said.

Grantham up for Michigan State job

BEREA -- Bill Cowher has had to deal with it and so has Brian Billick. No coach has had to deal with it in recent years as much as Bill Belichick.

Brain-drain on a coaching staff is part of the business, and it is something Romeo Crennel might have to cope with at the end of this season because Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is a leading candidate to replace John L. Smith at Michigan State.

Smith has been told he will not be retained after the Spartans season ends Saturday in a game at Penn State. Michigan State is 4-7 overall and 1-6 in the Big Ten. This is the Spartans' third straight sub-.500 season.

''Todd's name has been thrown around about the Michigan State situation,'' Crennel said yesterday. ''I don't think it's on me to say whether they've contacted him or not. If they want to make an announcement, I'll let them make the announcement because it is their job.''

If an NFL team wanted to hire Grantham as a head coach it would need permission from the Browns, but Michigan State can contact Grantham directly, Crennel said. He said asking for permission would just be a formality.

Grantham has already been contacted by Michigan State, a source close to the situation said yesterday. He has not been formally interviewed but that process is expected to begin shortly.

Others considered to be prime contenders are Brian Kelly, the head coach at Central Michigan; Pat Shurmur, the quarterbacks coach of the Philadelphia Eagles; LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini and Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong.

Grantham has ties to Michigan State. He was the Spartans defensive line coach in 1996 and '97 and their assistant head coach/defensive line coach in 1998, all under Nick Saban, the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Grantham moved on to the NFL as the Colts defensive line coach from 1999-2001 and had the same job with the Texans from 2002-2004 before the Browns hired him as defensive coordinator.

Saban remains a close friend of Spartans basketball coach Tom Izzo, an influential figure in Michigan State athletics. Saban, through Izzo, has endorsed Grantham, the source said.

Grantham helped his cause Sunday in Atlanta when the Browns held the high-scoring Falcons to one touchdown and two field goals in a 17-13 Browns triumph.

Though the record is 3-6, the Browns' defense has done its part by holding opponents to two or fewer touchdowns in six games. Five opponents have scored 19 or fewer points.

''We have some guys that will play very hard,'' Grantham said after the Browns beat Atlanta. ''They're very coachable. Basically, they execute the game plan. Going into the game, our whole deal was to stop the run, not let (tight end Alge Crumpler) beat us and force Michael Vick to throw the ball and keep him in the pocket.''

Reporters were given permission to interview Grantham after the game on the condition no questions were asked about Michigan State.

Vick was 16-of-40 passing and had a 43.4 passer rating Sunday. It was his worse passing day in a year.

The Browns rank 18th in overall defense. They are 30th vs. the run and sixth vs. the pass. They finished tied for 16th overall last year, Grantham's first as defensive coordinator. Despite the 4-12 record in 2004, the Browns were 15th in defense. The eight passing touchdowns allowed this season ties the Browns for fifth in the NFL.

''I think he's a good football coach,'' Crennel said. ''He's good for us. I like him a lot. What it will depend on is what he wants for his future, his aspirations. I think that's a big part of it.''

Michigan State has been a dead zone for coaches in recent years. The Spartans last went to the Rose Bowl as Big Ten champions in 1987. They last shared the Big Ten championship in 1990 in a four-way tie.

Michigan State has to compete with Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame for high school recruits.

Not content with having their football program in shambles, some MSU boosters apparently want to torpedo the basketball program too.

Is Izzo interested in MSU football job?
Dave Dye The Detroit News

EAST LANSING
-- Tom Izzo is unquestionably flattered he's being mentioned in some circles as a potential candidate for the football coach at Michigan State.

"I don't think I'm a candidate," Izzo said Monday during his weekly news conference at the Breslin Center, where his basketball team plays Vermont Tuesday night.

"If somebody asks me, 'Do you have an interest in football?' Yeah, I have an interest football. 'Would you have an interest in the football job?' I would have to say no, but I'd probably deep down have to say yeah, I would.

"Would I leave Michigan State basketball for football right now? Naw, I've got some business I want to finish. Some day, when I'm real old ? would I be (Steve) Mariucci's assistant somewhere? You're damn right I would."

This is why you're Michigan State!!! :smash:
