Skeete's Arrest & (sort of) Related Topics

....basically, this kid's life is ruined over $70 of weed...
Unless I've missed something, I thought he had 200 grams- which is over 7 ounces, or almost half a pound. If that's how much he had and it was only worth $70, it must have been the crappiest weed ever.

...so he went up, got the weed from his man, took it to the fake students, and got the $70 for his man. then, in may, he gets arrested on this charge.

Well, he has no one to blame but himself. Pot's illegal, period. Acting as a go-between isn't an excuse. Now, I'm not a toker so I don't know how much the shit costs, but didn't he get popped for "just under 200 grams", which is 4 ounces. Is pot less than $20 an ounce?

Obviously, I must be on some sort of drug...I typed 4 minutes slower than FindlayBucks.

edit: to make this simple since the two sides cant communicate

1-i don't care if you use pot yourself...it's not my bag (pun intended)

2-athletes should avoid pot like the plague....if it came out at a party, we left for fear of second hand intake and other reasons....

...but it just sounds like entrapment.

Asking someone to do something illegal and then popping them if they do isn't entrapment. Here's an excerpt from The 'Lectric Law Library's Lexicon On * Entrapment *

ENTRAPMENT - A person is 'entrapped' when he is induced or persuaded by law enforcement officers or their agents to commit a crime that he had no previous intent to commit; and the law as a matter of policy forbids conviction in such a case.

However, there is no entrapment where a person is ready and willing to break the law and the Government agents merely provide what appears to be a favorable opportunity for the person to commit the crime. For example, it is not entrapment for a Government agent to pretend to be someone else and to offer, either directly or through an informer or other decoy, to engage in an unlawful transaction with the person. So, a person would not be a victim of entrapment if the person was ready, willing and able to commit the crime charged in the indictment whenever opportunity was afforded, and that Government officers or their agents did no more than offer an opportunity.

On the other hand, if the evidence leaves a reasonable doubt whether the person had any intent to commit the crime except for inducement or persuasion on the part of some Government officer or agent, then the person is not guilty.

In slightly different words: Even though someone may have [sold drugs], as charged by the government, if it was the result of entrapment then he is not guilty. Government agents entrapped him if three things occurred:

- First, the idea for committing the crime came from the government agents and not from the person accused of the crime.

- Second, the government agents then persuaded or talked the person into committing the crime. Simply giving him the opportunity to commit the crime is not the same as persuading him to commit the crime.

- And third, the person was not ready and willing to commit the crime before the government agents spoke with him.

What police department would assign two officers to a full-time undercover assignment for 6 months in order to bust a college student on a relatively minor marijuana trafficking rap? Even if Skeete gave up "his source" in this scenario, that would not be remotely worth it.

It might be worth it if he "went up, got the weed from his man...." It makes it sound as though some guy on the next floor up had enough weight that Skeete knew he could could get a half pound without blinking. I haven't heard if anyone else was busted so far in this little escapade, so who knows. There is also the good possibility that this story is a bunch of crap or that Skeete was running a weed delivery business on campus. Until all the facts come out we are pretty much just talking about hypothetical situations.
The bottom line is unless this is mistaken identity, this kid bent over and jammed a pommel horse up his ass.

I'm not buying it. It does sound like a possibility. But it's just a convenient possibility. Obviously none of us know the "truth" yet but I find it hard to believe that the police would go to all these extremes to pull this shit. Let's keep one thing in mind, this is Columbus. I'll go out on a limb and assume most of the officers in this city, including the higher ranked, who would be involved in this alledged sting, are Buckeye fans. While we do have some dumbasses downtown offering money to our football players, I don't think we have people setting them up for a drug bust. I knew kids in high school that were smart and still smoked weed. I know kids now in college that smoke weed and are still intelligent. Just because Skeete has a good background and GPA doesn't mean he doesn't smoke weed. It just seems a little to "out there." Besides even if this story is true...while it is disturbing, the fact remains, as others have pointed out, Skeete ran that little exchange. Right there he went too far and should be punished. You do not put yourself and more importantly the program, which already has enough scrutiny, in jeopardy. The entire situation could have been avoided by Skeete himself.

The thought that he may have got it from another football player really scares me. Any guy that could sniff the starting lineup at OSU could play some sort of professional ball (NFL, Arena, Europe, CFL, Etc.). Common sense would tell you that it is stupid to risk so much for the sake of a temporary high...but the thing about marijuana is that it causes you to abandon your common sense and decision making abilities.

People don't normally abandon a pro-football career for holistic medicine and weed. People don't normally smuggle the original whizzinator into an airport in order to pass a drug test. This crap is illegal for a reason...it ruins lives. For every person that takes a hit now and then for recreation, there is a person that becomes dependant and they can't deal with the pressures of everyday life without it.

Skeete made a mistake and should pay for it, no matter how unfortunate the situation. Hopefully other players will take notice of what effect, even temporary contact with drugs will do to your life. It's unfortunate that Skeete had to be hurt...but good could still come of this.

actually, from everything ive read of yours you need to re-examine your life months ago....

that's pretty harsh. you don't know me at all. i don't understand your holier than thou attitude. i've probably disagreed with you in the past, but i don't remember all the people that i get into various internet arguments with and hold a grudge against them. i have never questioned your life, why do you feel the need to question mine. i have opinions which are occasionally different from the mainstream. disagree with my opinions and present a good argument, but don't scold me and act like you're better than me.

I know if I was back in college and a guy asked if I knew how they can get some weed I would have probable have done the same thing. I am assuming the $70 was his "finders fee" and was not the full price of the weed.

That being said, it was Skeete that put himself in that position and all he had to say was "No" or I don't do that stuff, but I heard about this other guy you could talk to. In college I was a poor kid that really had no responsibilities to anyone else but myself. Skeete is a scholarship football player and had more obligations and was stupid enough to go for the quick buck.

On why the cops would do this? Ohio State is a large campus and I am sure their is a ton of weed that is trafficated in the dorms. The question is how many other cops were in dorms and their goal is to not get the small timers. Their goal is to get those small timers to roll on who they got the weed from. They levy charges to force them to give up the bigger fish. You eventually get high enough and take out the guys that bring in pounds of it into the dorms.

Were they looking for athletes? No, they probable just stumbled upon it. What troubles me most about this is that according to "this source" it was another player. This player could be anyone, from a walk-on to a starter. But this smells like we are just scratching the surface which scares me more if another large shoe drops.

no offense meant....but pot is illegal....bottom line...

you can argue until you are blue in the face, but any scholarship athlete even being near the stuff gets what he deserves.....

should it be legal, was it entrapment....etc...all that is another subject.....and , having been an athlete and never touched the stuff....i leave to others the merits of its use in society...

for this offense, it doesnt matter if it was pot, heroin or prostitutes....the guy was allegedly involved in something illegal....

bottom line....that is why i say you need to re-examine your life....saying this law sucks or that law sucks and i shouldnt have to live by it is what leads to anarchy....
