SimPLLLLLLLe Jim "6-13" Harbaugh (B1G Suspenders McKhakiPants, Cheater Cheater Booger Eater)

I don't know if it is the delicious taste or the pitcher-guy busting through those brick walls, but I have always been a big time kool-aid drinker.

I gulped it down when they hired RR. Surely with UM talent he could better what he did at UVA. The fun times were over and it was time to go toe-to-toe with an occasional round going to the bad guys.

But alas, he was not a good fit, did not have the support of the Michigan-Man minions and fell short of the mark. And then the chant began - "Harbaugh! Harbaugh!! Harbaugh!!!" But it wasn't Harbaugh.

Brady Hoke didn't make a lot of sense, but what do I know? Certainly not as much as a highly paid AD. And he was a Michigan Man. I took a few more sips but still wasn't as concerned as I was with RR - at least not until the highly ranked recruiting classes started rolling in. Then I filled my cup and drank it down. The "uh's" and "duh's" were trumped by those wanged helmets and the blew man group was back. Or at least that is what my kool-aid triggered acid trips were telling me.

But again it was not to be so and the Hoke version of the team from up north garnered more laughs than the prehistoric cartoon character who inspired Brady's physique.

And now the chant was on in earnest. HARBAUGH!!!! The media joined in and when ESPN declared him the savior the fan base waited with bated breath for Jimbo to approach Lazarus tomb.

And then he did it. Turned his back on the NFL millions, mounted his maize and blue steed and rode through the streets of Ann Arbor with flowers and palm fronds at his feet.

And I drank again from the cup. I gulped from the cup. The media hype alone would inspire five-star recruits everywhere to spurn the Sabans and Meyers and flock to fill the UM roster.

Here came a man who was a winner at every level. A man who could have any job he wanted. A man who could have any recruit he wanted. A man who would do whatever it takes to win.

But not so fast. Let's break it down.

Sure, he has a Super Bowl ring. But Saban, Spurrier and many others have proven that NFL success does not always translate to the college ranks.

OK, but he was 11-1 two straight years at San Diego. That's San Diego - not San Diego State. San Diego plays Dayton and Marist. Yet it was good enough to get him the Stanford job - where he coached four season.

In the first three of those seasons he was 17-19. Harbo has one season of major college football where his record was exceptional. 12-1, best record ever for Stanford. And you must give him credit for turning that program around. But he did have Andrew Luck. The question is, was his success mostly due to Andrew? Or Luck?

But he spurned the NFL, correct? Well - not really. When he accepted the UM job he had been fired by SF and was without a job. And the reputation he left behind can be questioned. Win at all costs throwback to Vince Lombardi? Or asshole whiner? Just how many offers were on that table Jimbo?

As for recruiting, we need to give him time. It is difficult to argue he has been a failure in the short time he has had. But it is impossible to argue he has been a success.

The comical letter written by his son and the reported arrogance of the Mattison visit have done nothing to indicate UM is turning any corners.

Arguing you should come to UM because we have won more games than anybody? No kid that UM is currently recruiting or ever will recruit was alive the last time UM was in the top 10 in wins. These kids have seen Oregon play for the NC. They have watched Boise State play in a BCS Bowl. The most replayed victory in the Big House over the past 20 years has featured a blocked field goal being returned for a TD by Appalachian State. Kids today don't want to hear about a team that in it's first complete season lost all three of its games - to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Their argument that they are the "Winningest Program in CFB history" is based on wins over Adelbert, Albion, and Olivet. Physicians and Surgeons, Kalamazoo, and - I shit you not - Grand Rapids High.

They are forced to send out recruiting letters promising they will have a quarterback. As for spelling - I suppose it isn't their fault they don't have a contract with Nighkey.

And rather than flips to come to UM, we see kids transferring out. Not underclassmen who would open up spots for superior players in next years class. These are seniors whose spots would open up next year regardless, and who could have provided experienced depth next season.

To be sure, the statements above read like little more than a die hard Buckeye fan searching for ways to disparage the UM football program. And I plead guilty.

But here is the real lie. This is not a man who will do anything to win. He has already compromised. He passed over better coaches to hire his son. And that says more than it seems. Nick Saban would eat his son if it got him a championship. But Jimbo puts his boy to work using the most modern technology available. No, not a tweet. Not an Instragam or even a text. But an embarrassing hand written note.

So here's to you Mr. Harbaugh - Oh Yeaaah.

Not much of a contest.

Maybe his son is a damn good TE coach. There's a huge difference between lacking talent and lacking experience. If Zack Smith wasn't Earl Bruce's grandson would he be tOSU'S WR coach? I doubt it. I'm really glad he is, but he wasn't some prodigy when Urban hired him. Vrabel didn't have any experience and that turned out alright.

Except Jay Harbaugh has never played or coached the game.
