Coaching profession isn’t exactly one where a coach signs an extension for *less* money. That’s embarrassing for all parties.

Even worse, Jimbo has to suck it up and accept it to keep his dream of being the team’s savior (knowing he doesn’t have it in him) or he realizes he was not-so-kindly asked to leave based on that offer and he’s not wanted “home” anymore.

I think this is chickens coming home to roost and scUM admin getting realistic.
They realize he'll only ever be a 9win guy... but they're also OK with that... but they're not OK with that paying Saban/Urban money.
They're willing to treat him like Fitzgerald at NW -- but can his ego take the hit ? I doubt it. DFBIA definitely won't cope.
Yes, because if there’s one pairing that is absolutely a symbiotic guarantee of success, it is Khaki Radio and the glare of the NY media

If we can't keep him around AA, this is the next best thing. There has to be a Hard Knocks for this.
First off I am getting a feeling that the AD wants him gone but the boosters may want him back. And the boosters are the ones that make the decisions so lets all hope they win.

I think it's the opposite. Admin is good with 9wins and finishing 2nd-3rd, and playing the "academics" card. Boosters are not. DFBIA is apoplectic.

Is the wsj aware of the buckeye and spartan fans that are willing to pay to have harbaugh stay?

If you have less than 3 Porsche titled through a Montana LLC, the WSJ is not aware of your existence.

They gave him a 10% raise at the end of last year/beginning of 2020. His pay wasn't an issue to them until COVID hit and it started to stick out like a sore thumb with all the red ink.

It's just my best guess. Somebody has to be in the "keep him around" corner, or he'd be done. I get feeling the people running that University are almost happy to lean on the "but Academics" narrative while humblebragging about not having any hardware ? It's on brand, "our Academics are so amazing we're not good at sports" (ignore Northwestern is taking 2nd trip to Indy in the playoff era.)

Maybe money was easier to come by pre-covid ... or coming in 2nd to last was a final straw for some boosters ?
