Simple Jim wants a 16 team playoff

“I would change it to 16 teams,” Harbaugh told “Jamie and Stoney.” “FCS, they’ve got a great system. It’s been in place for many years. My dad won the national championship at Western Kentucky when they were I-AA in 2002. I think that’s the best system.

“If you look at every other sport, they have a playoff at every level and every other college sport does as well. It’s not a four-team. Basketball goes from 64 to the Final Four. I think that’s the way it should be done to have a national champion like they do in gymnastics, like they do in basketball, men’s and women’s, lacrosse, every other sport you can think of. And you already have the format with the FCS.”

So Dad has won a championship.

His brother has won a championship.

Jimmy has been a failure.

I'm sure that doesn't eat at him

Why not 64? Just spend the entire season having play-off games.

Eight. It should stop there. One for each conference champion, and left overs for the Indy/Wild cards. It hasn't happened yet, but one of these years there could be multiple undefeated teams without enough spots to go around. Anyway, with 8, virtually every year tOSU would have nothing to worry about.

I support an eight-team playoff, but no auto-bids for conference champs, lest you get an 9-4 team that was 5-3 in their division but just happened to upset their opponent in their CCG. Just take the top eight teams as ranked by the committee.

5-3 would be a problem. Just suspect that if there are no guidelines, it would end up being five from the SEC and 3 alsorans.

FOUR IS PLENTY! Why do we keep feeling the need to expand it. I havent seen a team ranked 5th yet that had a strong argument to be #1.. Once we get to 8 teams like tOSU and Bama dont even need to think about the regular season because its a given every year that they will be there.. college football is the best sport in america because EVERY GAME MATTERS.. each time we expand the playoff those games matter just a little bit less.

Bingo. What's added with bumping the size of the field even to eight? Are we really concerned that a team ranked #5-#8 is the best team in the country? I see a real cost to increasing the field, namely in watering down the regular season.
