Should semipro/college players be paid, or allowed to sell their stuff? (NIL and Revenue Sharing)

No doubt. But the non-big boys can't - and that would lead to a situation where the George Steinbrenners of college sports could pay and the So Mississippis could not. Ain't gonna happen.

So fuck the So Mississippis. They're pretty much fucked as is. I mean, Utah not paying players won't be the reason they don't get into the BCS NC.

I never said it would happen, but thanks for educating me.

Make the scholarship athletes live on campus each year they are on scholarship. Provide all the current benefits plus a $100 per month stipend for tranny hookers or whatever they want. I can't believe this is even an argument. These kids are well compensated for the work they do. Please don't tell me Terrelle Pryor is worth more than his current benefits package because tOSU makes millions off the football team. The football team makes millions because of Troy Smith, Eddie George, Chris Spielman, Archie Griffin etc. Not because of Terrelle Pryor. If Skippy McDouchelozzle were the QB every one of you would still watch. If Terrelle Pryor had gone to Ohio University would that school have made millions of dollars off its football program over the past 3 years?
We're already on the slippery slope, I say the swag bags should be eliminated too. If your parents can't afford to buy you an XBox then you go to your buddy's and play. Or be like normal college kids: fill out some credit card apps, get free t-shirts and live in debt.

What about other students who get full ride scholarships but are allowed to have jobs?

And I wonder, if I had a verifiable signed TP jersey, could I get free tattoos if I traded it in to the parlor owner?

I think it would be worth something if the owner was a Buckeye fan. But I also think they care about the publicity they get by saying TP was inked here (or insert other athlete)

And those guys didn't get paid either. That's like saying General Electric shouldn't have to pay their factory workers because they make millions off of Thomas Edison.

Terrelle absolutely earns many millions more for OSU than they would without him. Same with Troy vs Justin.

Wonderful. The rest of the nation's casual viewers would not watch and OSU's ratings would suffer with Joe Bauserman vs Arkansas instead of Pryor. That's why the NCAA laughably delayed their suspension. OSU would not sell a bazillion Joe Bauserman jerseys either.

They are treated so much better than a student receiving a comparable academic scholarship it's laughable to compare the two. If a kid on a nerd scholarship has headaches does he get comparable treatment to a running back with a sore knee?

GE has to pay their factory workers because they are professional factory workers. Last I checked tOSU doesn't have professional football players.

The Ol' Ball Coach proposes that players get paid by the coaches. About half of the SEC coaches signed onto the proposal, but I can't see it ever being allowed by the NCAA.

Quite possibly one of the stupidest suggestions ever made by a coach, most of whom do not have multi-million dollar salaries. Then there's Title IX, among other things.

As others suggested, it sounds more like he's trying to get out of town ahead of the posse.

It's not even remotely like that at all.

The CFN guys weigh in on the issue.

Among the themes:

"It will never happen because of Title IX."

I think this is the biggest hurdle. I think the moment a conference pays a male sport you will have a lawsuit seaking equal opportunity for an offsetting amount of female athletes to receive payment.

In the end, schools don't want to pay because it would take a chunk out of their budget. I envision paying players would end up forcing schools to cancel non-revenue sports to make up the revenue needed for payment.

OSU would sell a bazillion other jerseys. Don't act as if TP is why Ohio State is on national TV and why memorabilia sales are so high. Does he have a part in it, sure. But a small part.
As to ratings, people tune in to watch tOSU because it's tOSU. Do we get a ratings bump for having TP, probably. I doubt it's anywhere near what you seem to think it is, though. The 2011 Sugar Bowl was tOSU's lowest rated BCS game ever.
