Shoelace and the Heisman - where's Denard finish?

Let's start with OSU's defense - they've now held up against Jacory Harris and a good set of receivers and then held Indiana -- another good QB receiver combo -- to under a hundred yards while the game was still in play, keeping another passer and good set of receivers in check. What they haven't had to stop is a QB -- like Dennard -- who can run.

If the Buckeyes get ahead early in the game -- as Michigan State did -- and if they get up by three scores in the 3rd quarter -- as Michigan State did, then the Buckeyes can force Robinson to throw and take away all but his ability to scramble. Robinson played well into the middle of the third quarter, cutting Sparty's lead to one score and giving me another one of those here-they-go-again moments. Then the Spartan d-line got after Robinson. His receivers dropped three balls in one series, each of which could have gained a first down and one of which might have gone all the way -- the Spartan offense scored to take the lead back to two scores and Robinson began trying to force plays. No glorious finish, no more Heisman talk from folks who should have known better.

Robinson's improvement has been in the short game -- ironic in that Pryor's improvement has been in the medium to long range passes while he still has difficulty with the short pass -- but Robinson has receivers who can turn a short pass into a big play and who can get deep on most defenses -- including MSU's -- but he doesn't have a defense that can keep the other guy from scoring or get him the ball with a short field. He doesn't have a running back, or a running game, outside of himself -- sound familiar?

The question remains durability and durability becomes a bigger factor because Michigan has no defense, thus Robinson has to play the full offense the whole game.

Going out of your way to over-analyze scUM to give them compliments is some sort of condition I'm sure....

This election is a muddy mess, and so is the Heisman Trophy race. College football's prize goes to the "player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity."

Translation: great player, good citizen. Given those parameters, current favorite Cam Newton of Auburn is off my ballot. In his previous life as a Gator, Newton swiped a laptop, then pitched it out a dorm window when the police showed up. The throw was reportedly wobbly and short, and felony charges followed. Simply relocating doesn't clear the rap sheet.

Oregon's LaMichael James is often mentioned, but he had his mug shot taken earlier this year after grabbing his girlfriend's neck and shoving her to the ground. Plea deals don't absolve sins. If you've ever stolen a computer or registered a first-round knockout of a woman " no votes " no matter how many touchdowns you have.

Ohio State has been hesitant to campaign for Terrelle Pryor, and with sound reasoning. He's very good, but not yet a Heisman caliber stud. Michigan's Denard Robinson has done more than any player in the country, but recent losses hurt his chances.

Tim Tebow made this vote easy, but you don't have to be an Eagle Scout to win the Heisman. It's just that character matters, so keep the Father Flanagan projects out. I am not Cam Newton, and I am sure he does not approve this message.

Hard picks this year -maybe they'll skip it this year.
