Shoelace and the Heisman - where's Denard finish?

That's beside the point. We DON'T know how serious the injury was and yet people want to go on record that the kid: a) could have played, b) the injury wouldn't affect his ability to hang onto the ball -- something he had trouble with even when not injured -- c) the decision was all Denard's d) he's a wuss.

I don't think that's a fair analysis.

Just to be clear, it's not my analysis, I haven't criticized him for not going back into the game.

When you made the comment about injuries and their long-term effects, that seemed to indicate to me that you were referring to a possible concussion. If that had been invovled with the decision to keep him out, that's significantly different from a hand injury, and I don't think he'd have gotten much grief from this board - it's more likely that RichRod's play calls would have been cited as the reason Shoelace was taking a beating.

I wanted to dispel any notion that people reading this thread could expect this board to be harsh on somebody sitting out with a possible head injury.

In accordance with BB73's post, I'll own up with being one of those who has ragged on Denard for what occurred in the Game. The way it appeared on the television left a lot to be desired. IF it had been something such as a head injury or something that appeared more serious; then I wouldn't have taken it as far. I should also note that if I didn't think an injured Denard was still a better option than Tate; then it wouldn't have been an issue for me either. However, once Denard came out, it just seemed that Michigan mailed it in for good. Thought it lessened the Game from their POV. Anyway... I feel bad about my initial comments regarding Denard.

Are there soothsayers and clairvoyants on this net who KNOW for sure why Denard didn't finish the game?

In the face of what we are learning about athletic injuries and their long term affects it seems to me that caution is far better than remaining on the field and risking greater injury.

The kid took a great many shots throughout the season and didn't quit. I'd be slow to demean him.

Nice try, but head injuries are totally irrelevant to the situation of a kid pointing at his finger as the reason he's telling the coach that he can't go back into the game.

EDIT: I realize that BB73 and others have already pointed this out, but it warrants repeating to emphasize the gross overexaggeration in the failed analogy.

I'm standing by my "pussy" comments regarding Denard.

Then would you support a "pussy" statement about Beanie who more than once took himself out of games? If your son told a coach he was injured and didn't want to go back in a game would you want the coach to call him a pussy?

Yes, there are times when someone pulls up lame to get out of an embarrassing situation, but to sit in the stands and make those determinations...

I'd rather err on the side that the athlete knows what's best for him in that situation than to put an athlete back in a game and have a serious injury follow.

Beanie took a lot of criticism for being injury prone and his inability to play through minor dings. Now the concussion against Tejas is a different scenario.

Also, I never said RichRod should have put him back in the game after he said he couldn't go. The coach should respect his players decision.

I just said that for him to tell the coach he couldn't go with an injury to his non throwing hand which was "so bad" that he received no treatment on the sidelines (according to sideline reporters and announcers) allows me as a fan of his archrival team to make fun of him. Also, reports out of Ann Arbor 2 weeks after the game were that Denard is as healthy as he has been all season. One would think that a devastating hand injury would take more than 2 weeks to heal.

This. Beanie was a tremendously physically gifted athlete and one hell of a RB, but "tough" was not something that was often mentioned next to his name. He was called out numerous times by numerous prominent people/posters for his inability/unwillingness to play through injuries that "big time" players do. An injury to your non-throwing hand that didn't even require immediate medical attention seems to fall into that category. I mean, we're talking about "THE GAME". That's where legends are born in Ohio and tsun. To tap out just because it doesn't look like you can win is bullshit. The kid toughed it out through much of the season, but quit when he was getting beat up on the biggest stage IMO.

I give him a pass because.... well.. have you seen how cool his hair is?

Here's another reason you're probably not aware of - he plays football without his shoelaces being tied!
