Sharrif Floyd (official thread)

LJB, you mentioned in the Hankins thread that Floyd has academic issues. Can you expound upon that at all?

I don't remember hearing anything about that previously. Is his offer conditional?
BPRT said:
DT Sharrif Floyd = no offer, no interest...Agreed - sounds like there are some academic issues here...I've heard he'll have qualification issues
BPRT - A Candid Conversation

That's the best that I can do for you, as I'm not sure that there is anything published on the issue of his academics.

As far as his offer being conditional ... apparently not, but he'll still have to do what it takes to gain admission (similar to Shaq Rowell).

Floyd to see USC coaches Tuesday

By Phil Kornblut
DL Sharrif Floyd (6-3 311) of Philadelphia saw his high school career end Saturday with his team's loss in the city championship game. Floyd had put his recruiting activities on hold until after his season was completed. Now, he'll jump right back into things. USC recruiters GA Mangus and Brad Lawing will visit Floyd in Philadelphia Tuesday, and Floyd is looking at making an official visit to USC either this coming weekend or December 11th. Floyd has taken official visits to Florida, Southern Cal and Ohio State, and he's been to Penn State unofficially. He's also been planning to visit North Carolina.

Many times the issue is getting a qualifying test score. For the ACT and OSU athletes it is in the 18-21 range depending on their core GPA. The average OSU Freshman entering last fall averaged a 27 so the requirements for Athletics is lower. By all accounts he is a mature kid who had a difficult family situation. Since he officially visited, OSU admissions and the staff feel confident he can make the bar. Best of luck to SF wherever he goes.

Just because the average was 27 doesn't mean the requirement was 27.
This factoid in no way proves that the standard is lower for athletes.
(it very well may be, but your argument is not logical and misleading)

I think this one may just be a matter of time (for the good guys) based on the info coming out about a month ago.

I agree with you, but applicants simply aren't even considered at OSU if they have an 18-21 on the ACT these days, so if athletes really are getting accepted with scores that low, it's because they're athletes. A friend of mine is a high school guidance counselor in Ohio, and she's told me on several occassions that the standards at Ohio State have gone up dramatically in the last 5 years or so. Kids that score 24-27 would have been locks at OSU when I was going through the process. Now those scores will put you on the fence.

I've never been able to get a good answer on what minimum academic requirements are set for prospective athletes at OSU or any other school, but I'm wholly convinced standards are lower for athletes all over the country, including at schools like Notre Dame, Stanford, and yes, even the Harvard of the Midwest.

I Did not mean to mislead. Admission is based on HS GPA and courses taken, ACT or SAT score & extracurricular activities/life experiences. Athletes are admitted with lower test scores than the average student population average. There is a sliding scale that they use which combines HS GPA (Core VERY important) and test score. The higher the GPA the less reliance on a high test score but 18 seems to be the minimum OSU accepts for athletes these days. This score would be offset by a high GPA. An 18 ACT score is at about 50% for all students who take the test in the U.S.

OSU is a tough place to get into for a Freshman. A friend of mine had his son start at Miami of Ohio because he could not get admitted into the OSU main campus. After one year he transfered into OSU. Miami is a strong academic school. Times have changed. JT can also plead a borderline case to the University officials but he only has one or two of these wild cards per year. I would venture to guess OSU admissions for athletes is higher than UM these days. PSU & Wisconcin are on par. Northwestern is still the Big 10 gold standard. I hope this clarifies my earlier statement.

USC to meet with Floyd Wednesday

By Phil Kornblut
USC recruiters GA Mangus and Brad Lawing will meet with DL Sharrif Floyd (6-3 311) of Philadelphia Wednesday according to Floyd's assistant coach and adviser Andre Odom. The meeting is scheduled to take place Wednesday afternoon. Lawing will visit with OL Morgan Moses at Hargrave Prep, VA before flying to Philadelphia to meet up ith Mangus who will be flying in from Tampa. Miami is the only school to meet with Floyd thus far. Right now the Hurricanes are not a factor. Floyd has taken official visits to Florida, Southern Cal and Ohio State. The Trojans are not a factor at this point. Mangus and Lawing will try to get Floyd set up for an official visit during their meeting. December 18th is the earliest possibility because Floyd is flying out next week to Hawaii for an all star game. He will also play in the US Army All American Game early next month. He plans to announce his decision January 9th during the Army game. At this point USC, Florida and Ohio State appear to be the finalists with no favorite.

Does Florida still have a shot at Sharrif Floyd? I haven’t heard much talk about him lately.
— Brandon

Word is that Floyd is a heavy, heavy lean to Ohio State. I talked to him briefly at the beginning of the year and it seemed like he was really into Florida. I honestly thought he would be a guy to commit to the Gators down the road. Since his visit to UF for the Tennessee game, all I hear is that Ohio State is the team to beat. Penn State appears to be out of the race for the Philadelphia George Washington defensive tackle. You’d think the Gators would be going after him hard with how much the staff covets having such a deep and powerful defensive interior. The Gators seem set on pursuing Ronald Powell, Chris Martin and Owamagbe Odighizuwa to finish out at defensive end. But they are coming up short inside. The Gators have New Port Richie Florida Gulf defensive tackle Leon Orr committed, but I think Florida would like to get another big body inside in this class. If Floyd is bent on OSU, look for the Gators to make an even stronger push for Detroit Southeastern’s Johnathon Hankins, who visited for the FSU game.
