The Hawaii All-Stars got the memo. Philadelphia (Pa.) defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd is an absolute beast. He fought double and triple teams all night, and still recorded a sack. Most importantly, he cleared the way for his fellow defensive line mates.

Coach Scheib breaks down the best of the best
I asked Coach Scheib to name a few players that stuck out during the week. "Sharrif Floyd is one of the best I have ever seen, and he is an even better person than he is a player. I thought he was great." Scheib said.

Is that the way he says his name? I thought it was pronounced "Sha-reef" As in, "Shareef don't like it.....Rock the Casbah, Rock the Casbah!"

Floyd won't visit USC this week

DL Sharrif Floyd of Philadelphia will not be able to make his official visit to USC this week. Floyd missed a lot of school last week while participating in an all star game in Hawaii and his teachers are not keen on the idea of him missing more class time for a mid week visit. USC recruiter GA Mangus plans to visit Floyd this week in Philadelphia. Floyd is scheduled to take his official visit to North Carolina this weekend. Floyd has said taking an official visit to USC is not important to him and will not affect the Gamecocks' standing with him because he spent a lot of time there during the summer.

Gamecock coaches visiting Floyd tonight

USC coaches are having an in home visit with DL Sharrif Floyd tonight. Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier along with assistants GA Mangus and Brad Lawing flew up to Philadelphia after practice Thursday. They will try to convince Floyd to make an official visit to USC this weekend. He currently is scheduled for an official visit to North Carolina this weekend. Florida coach Urban Meyer met with Floyd earlier in the day Thursday. Floyd has taken official visits kto Florida, Southern Cal and Ohio State. He plans to announce his decision at the Army All American Game January 9th.

George Washington's Sharrif Floyd, ranked as the No. 1 defensive tackle in the country by one publication, has recently received visits from some high-profile college coaches.

On Thursday, Florida's Urban Meyer and two assistants were in Northeast Philadelphia and spent about three hours at the school. Later that day, Floyd, along with Washington coach Ron Cohen, had dinner at Chickie's & Pete's on the Boulevard with South Carolina boss Steve Spurrier and two assistants. In case you were wondering, Spurrier, per NCAA rules, did not foot the bill.

Last week, Ohio State's Jim Tressel and three assistants were in to see the 6-foot-3, 310-pounder, who this season helped lead George Washington to an 8-3 record and its third straight Public League championship.

"He's probably the most highly recruited Philadelphia kid ever," Cohen said.

Friday, Floyd, a two-way lineman projected to play defense in college, left for an official visit to North Carolina. His other official visits were to Ohio State, Florida and USC. He does not plan to take a fifth paid visit allowed by the NCAA.

At last Saturday's Aloha Prep Bowl in Hawaii, Floyd was selected as his team's captain and presented with a game ball.

On Jan. 9, the blue-chip recruit will compete in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio. There, in front of a nationally televised audience, he plans to announce his college destination.

Spurrier and Assistants Meet With Floyd

USC head coach Steve Spurrier led a USC contingent of three coaches who met Thursday night with DL Sharrif Floyd (6-3 311) of Philadelphia in Floyd's home. Assistant coach GA Mangus and Brad Lawing were also with Spurrier. Washington High head coach Ron Cohen and assistant coach Andre Odom sat in on the meeting as well.

The Gamecock coaches were hoping to get Floyd to make an official visit this weekend but he is sticking with his scheduled visit to North Carolina. In fact, Floyd left Philly Friday afternoon for the trip to Chapel Hill. However, Floyd does plan to take an official visit to USC January 15th despite the fact he plans to make an announcement at the US Army All American Game January 9th. He plans to visit USC even if he doesn't announce then for the Gamecocks. Floyd made two unofficial visits to USC last summer.

Spurrier wasn't the only head coach to see Odom Thursday. Florida's Urban Meyer also was in. Floyd has taken other official visits to Florida, Southern Cal and Ohio State. He has not yet made his decision and is not indicating a favorite.

No more visits for Floyd

DL Sharrif Floyd of Philadelphia took an official visit to North Carolina over the weekend and that will be his final visit according to a source familiar with Floyd's plans. Floyd was scheduled to visit USC January 15th, but the source said with Floyd already being very familiar with USC, and planning to announce January 9th during the US Army All American Game, there was simply no reason for him to come back to Columbia. Floyd made two unofficial visits to USC during the summer. "South Carolina is still in the loop," the source said. "He already knows it all about them...the facilities, the coaches...it's a good thing." The source said Floyd liked his visit to North Carolina. Floyd also is considering Ohio State and Florida. He's not indicating a favorite at this time.

HE MOVES LIKE a guy 100 pounds lighter, can probably bench press a small country, and is the very definition of ornery.

His name is Sharrif Floyd and, thanks to this age of personal-contact overload, one could strongly build a case that he's the most heavily recruited football player in city leagues history.

Floyd, a 6-3, 310-pound senior at George Washington, is considered by many (most?) observers to be the nation's No. 1 defensive line prospect and he's our Public League Player of the Year in connection with the Daily News All-City Football Team.

Floyd this season made 60 tackles. An amazing 36, including eight sacks, were made behind the line. He also batted down five passes, forced two fumbles and blocked five punts . . . oh, and a field goal attempt.

He has already played in one national all-star game, in Hawaii, and soon will participate in another, in Texas. While there he'll announce his college destination. His Final Three features Ohio State, Florida and North Carolina, and the former is believed to hold the lead.

Defensive lineman Sharrif Floyd of Philadelphia will not take any more visits and will announce his decision during the US Army All American Game on Jan. 9. Floyd took official visits to North Carolina, Ohio State, Florida and Southern Cal. He dropped plans to visit USC on Jan. 15, but he has not dropped the Gamecocks. He made two unofficial visits to USC over the summer, spending six days on campus, and Floyd feels knowledgeable enough about the Gamecocks to consider them on that basis.
