SG Walter Offutt (Asst. BBall Coach Toledo Rockets)

BG Free

no mention of Offutt nor the fact that it was a Mercy Rule finish (as soon as Indy Elite went up by 20 game over) but I was right on with the assessment that lewis jackson ran the show, zeller cleaned up and Offutt turned out the lights

some screenshots sorry for crappy resolution

without a doubt. elite has played exceptionally, winning the gibbons, kingwood, and adidas may classics.

guess who was indy elite's leading scorer this weekend? yep. walter offutt.

In your mind did he show enough skills that he might be able to play a little PG next year?

Of course I meant for his high school team next year:) and possibly for the Buckeyes the following.

here are some stats that give testament to walter's defensive ability:

in indy elite's semifinal game, courtney fortson (#6 guard and #64 overall, according to rivals) scored 18 points in the first half. the 5'10" fortson was repeatedly taking the 5'9" lewis jackson off the dribble and scoring at will near the bucket. fortson grabbed several offensive rebounds and scored among indy's big men. fortson was by far southeast's best player in the first half (and overall).

starting the second half, indy elite's coach moved offutt over to fortson. walter stayed with him for the rest of the game. fortson scored 4 more points.

in indy elite's championship game, delvon roe had tallied 23 points by the final 10 minutes of the game. the 6'8" roe was scoring in a number of ways. he shot well from the 3-point line (connecting on at least 3), took his defenders (zeller, negedu, washington, etc.) off the dribble, posted up, and capitalized in transition. delvon was by far king of the court's best player.

with 10 minutes to go in the game, indy elite's coach moved offutt over to roe, who has a 5-inch, 40-pound advantage. walter stayed with him for the rest of the game. roe scored 4 more points (2 against another player and 2 off of another player's goaltend). the game was mercy ruled, so offutt actually guarded roe for 8 minutes.

so, in the 38 minutes that fortson and roe faced other defenders, the two scored a combined 41 points. in the 24 minutes that they played against offutt, they scored a combined 8 points. offutt absolutely shut down those two players. even marcus ginyard, a commentator for the games, noted offutt's stellar defensive play.

what really impressed me about offutt was how he rose to the challenge of guarding roe. before that point in the game, his defense was certainly good. koc didn't have much offensive firepower besides roe, so offutt's defense wasn't all that necessary. when offutt was put on roe, you could see the extra spring in his step. he has a desire to win and a desire to play hard in the face of great opposition. he is a winner. it's no surprise that he was the leading scorer on the championship team.

Watched some parts of the videos earlier and Offut showed great defensive ability and great explosion off the dribble...If he can develop that midrange game and the spot up game some, he will be a great player...

He is your typical combo guard and will take over the role that we saw Jamar play this year as a 2g with the back up role at the PG position...

Indiana Elite guard Walter Offutt has enjoyed a good week of work, particularly on the defensive end of the floor. If he ever tested out on the athleticism drills as a football prospect, we could be talking about one of the best athletes in the country. He's athletic, quick, strong and moves like a guy finding holes as a two-way athlete on the gridiron.

An update on Rivals today.

I still don't understand why Scout and Rivals are not very high on Offut as they were when his recruitment first started, and I am sure it has to do with him being an early committment, but Offut just continues to get better...

He is going to be a very athletic wing, much in the mold of Lighty IMO...

Some of the state's top high school basketball players will be on display in the Circle City Classic's Challenge of Champions scheduled for Dec. 8 in Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Fort Wayne Luers sophomore DeShaun Thomas, rated as one of the top five players in the nation in the Class of 2010, and Lawrence North forward Stephan Van Treese, one of the state's highest-ranked juniors, headline the field.

Other schools in the event are Class 4A runner-up North Central, Class 4A champion East Chicago Central, Marion, Lafayette Jeff, Brownsburg, Batesville, Howe and Warren Central. Specific matchups are to be set.

Warren Central is led by Ohio State recruit Walter Offutt, and Marion includes North Carolina State recruit Julius Mays. Batesville has high-scoring junior guard Colt Ryan, and Howe returns the school's all-time leading scorer, IUPUI-bound Larry Stone.
