SG Walter Offutt (Asst. BBall Coach Toledo Rockets)

yeah, i think we have a good one with offutt. he is exceptional off the dribble and is willing to go either left or right. his first step has "blow by" speed, and he's not not afraid to take it all the way to the basket. walter's ball handling skills appear solid. he is fine going into and out of heavy traffic. his jump shot does need some work, as there is a hitch. he shoots it off of a shelf, though not nearly as pronounced as ron lewis does. there is also a bit too much of a forward lean.

what impressed me most about offutt was his defense. delvon roe was having a monster game against indiana elite. in fact, i think roe had about 25 of his team's first 40 points. indiana's coach then put offutt on roe. yes, offutt's coach put him on a player that is 5 inches taller and about 40 pounds heavier. more or less, offutt shut him down. walter wouldn't let delvon hit from the outside. there was always a hand in his face or a hand on delvon's hip. offutt was way to quick to allow roe to take him off the dribble. offutt also has the hops to contend with some inside play.

i had to laugh when the koc's coach reciprocated by putting delvon on walter. offutt made koc's coach look foolish, repeatedly taking roe off the dribble and blowing past him. our buckeye made this spartan look like a statue. of course, roe won't be facing guards in 1-on-1 situations in college, but it was still fun to see offutt take it at him.

don't get me wrong... michigan state is getting game-changer. if roe is anything but a first or second team big ten player his freshman year, i will be surprised. that being stated, we should be very proud of matta grabbing offutt. this is a solid player who plays blue chip basketball on both ends of the court.

oh, by the way... indiana elite won the 17u championship game against the king of the court. the score was 71-50. though koc had the trees and roe, they could not contend with the elite's backcourt.

In part because Crater did not play
of course. however, if indy elite didn't have either jackson or offutt, koc still would have had major issues on the perimeter. even at the post positions, ie was much more athletic than koc. in no way could pritchard and frease handle negedu and washington. without mullens and crater, koc was severely overmatched.

I also watched the game and was impressed by Offutt. Not only is he quick with the ball but he has the body to finish in traffic. He uses his body well on defense too...moves his feet well. The posts above are correct...King of the Court didn't have the guards to compete. Roe guarding a player like Offutt on the perimeter is a huge mismatch.

Korie Lucious played with King of the Court this weekend but I didn't see him on the floor or bench during the championship game. Also didn't see Robert Wilson (Wisconsin commit). With Noopy hurt, the Indy team had too many perimeter options.
