SG Lenzelle Smith (Hapoel Eilat - Israel)

Lenzelle Smith, 6-3 rising senior combo guard, Zion-Benton (IL): Smith, a Chicago-area prospect (he missed the first two days at the next event I covered; what up, Rev) Ohio State commit, used the camp as a forum to show observers he could indeed be a full-time point guard on the next level, as he distributed by virtue of his impressive court vision and decision-making ability, repeatedly got into the lane to finish using his strength and kept defenders honest from the outside with his shooting, but didn?t abandon his post-up game and rebounding.

Lenzelle Smith, 6-3 rising senior combo guard, Rising Stars/Zion-Benton (IL): Smith, an Ohio State commit, continues to be a complete all-around player?his ability to put in work down low, as a finisher, post-up scorer and Windex man are admirable, especially since he?s not a freak athlete?but his evolution as more and more of a true point guard has been fascinating, as he?s capable of breaking down defenders with his shifty handle and quicker-than-expected first step, overpowering them with his husky frame, he uses his size at the position to see the court and can deliver pinpoint dimes without fearing turnovers, thanks to using his bulk to shield off would-be pickpockets, all of signs of him playing the position full-time in Columbus, or at least sharing it with the aformentioned Craft.

Smith won't sign on signing day

I just talked with Lenzelle Smith's father, Lenzelle Sr., who said his son will not sign his national letter of intent with Ohio State until Nov.13, two days after the fall signing period begins.

Coaches and fans sometimes worry about delays in receiving the documents with the signature that binds the player to the school for one year. Episodes in which recruits pull a last-minute switch have happened and will happen.

But the younger Smith has good reason to wait.

Nov.13 "is my birthday," Lenzelle Sr. said, "so it's a little more significant."

Smith:
"A lot of scout sites don?t know my position. They'd see me play and I could do a lot of things: post up smaller guards, be quicker than a small forward. They don't know what to rank me as. I don?t categorize myself. I'm just a guard. Whatever I need to do, that?s what I?ll get done. The (Ohio State) coaches have recommended to me working on my point-guard skills, but they haven't told me that's what I'll be. They just want me to become a solid guard."

Matta:
"With Lenzelle, I love first and foremost his ability to pass the basketball. I think he was the best passer I saw this summer. With all these players, I think we got multi-dimensional players, and Lenzelle?s one that I think, is he a (shooting guard), a (small forward), a point guard? He can play any position. He?s got great size, he knows how to use his body well. I look at him and Jared and Deshaun, they?re just so physical with their bodies for their age. They?re the kind of guys that beat people up and don?t even know they?re doing it. Lenzelle?s also got a great basketball IQ. Hopefully he can come in here and do a lot of different things for us."

ESPN Scouts Inc.'s Rankin on Smith: "Lenzelle Smith gives Ohio State a versatile wing who is a tremendous passer. I think Lenzelle Smith is the second-best passer in the 2010 class. The best passer is North Carolina recruit Kendall Marshall. Lenzelle is after him in my opinion."

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Lenzelle fits into the program. Reading about his play, dedication and hardwork, I envision a slightly taller, somewhat stronger vision of Brian Brown, a kid who'll be a strong defender and do all the dirty work while at the same time being an adequate scorer and handler to just cause the other team a headache. He just seems like another versatile player with lots of potential and upside.

Lenzelle out, but Z-B still looks strong
November 24, 2009
BY BRYAN BONATO SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-SUN

CHICAGO -- The second-most important thing you need to know about Zion-Benton High's season opener here Monday in the Lane Tech holiday boys basketball tournament is that Ohio State-bound Lenzelle Smith did not play because of an ankle injury.

The most important thing you need to know is that with the team's superstar in street clothes on the bench, the Zee-Bees still looked really good.

Granted, the 72-40 thumping of host Lane Tech wasn't the measuring stick that tonight's game against powerful Oak Park-River Forest will be.

But Zion showed that it has plenty of talent besides Smith, and should be a dominant club when he does eventually return to the lineup.

"Lenzelle hurt his ankle in practice last week. We know know when he'll be back," said veteran coach Don Kloth. "Our main concern is that it heels properly."

Lenzelle Smith's sprained ankle prevented the Ohio State-bound senior star from playing in Zion-Benton's first five games in the prestigious Lane Tech Thanksgiving Tournament last week.

But even though Smith's injured ankle was painful, it didn't match the ache in his heart as he watched his teammates struggle with a 2-3 record in the event.

"It was like I was letting my teammates down," said Smith. "That hurt more than my injury."

Smith was back in the Zee-Bees lineup on Friday in their North Suburban Lake opener at Warren, and the positive influence on the squad was immediate.

Smith poured in eight first-quarter points on his way to a game-high 25-point effort in Zion's 58-51 win over the Blue Devils.

"I felt so good to be back in there," said Smith.

Smith finished the first half with 18 points as the Zee-Bees built a 29-22 halftime lead, before he turned into a play-maker in the second half.

"Coach (Chuck) Ramsey did a good job of adjusting at halftime and they put some more pressure on me," said Smith. "So that's when I tried to get my teammates involved more. They showed they can score too."
