I am now at a complete loss for words. While I will grant you the fact, that I would like for another PG to come in the same recruiting class from everything that I have read he seems to be coming around very nicely. A guy has to start sometime doesn't he and there have been great a few freshmen PG's starting over the last several years across the country and their teams have done fairly well.buckeydoptimist;1464928; said:Having just 1 guy as a candidate at such a vital spot will never let me relax. On a roster of 12-13 you'd want to have at least 2 and probably more point guards.
Is anyone really that confident that Smith can start at PG as a green frosh and lead the team? Really? I aint! I want a better option to start that season! Let Smith bide his time for a year or two as a backup point.

Also on a sidenote, it was pretty cool to see Thad Matta at one of our open gyms a couple of months back. There were coaches from all kinds of schools there including Georgetown, Florida State, Georgia Tech, etc. None had their head coach there. I was sitting next to Matta and didn't notice it at first. All I saw was a Buckeye logo on his collar, and then when he turned around the first thing I saw was his nose (:)) and noticed him. I thought that was pretty cool and showed Lenzelle how much he was wanted (Even though he already knew). Word around the school was Smith would choose OSU before he made his decision. I would've been told you guys if I remembered that this site has a bball side too. Congrats on a great player.
Now that you know BuckeyePlanet has a basketball forum please keep us updated on Lenzelle's progression as a player. Try to be a little unbiased:). We are very happy to have him coming to Ohio State and we know he will enjoy his experience here almost as much as we will enjoy his exploits on the basketball court.ThaKid101;1464956; said:He goes to my school, and he is a beast. I guess I would like to know if you have ever seen Lenzelle Smith play in person and if you have what don't you see in him than other guys do. If you have never seen him, that's a completely different story:(
I think you need to go over to BN and discuss basketball PG recruiting with some of their posters because you certainly have me lost and perhaps some of them can understand you.buckeydoptimist;1466035; said:I love that we signed Lenzelle and feel he has a bright future as a buckeye. But I am a realist about frosh point guards starting in college.
I have never seen him in person, just clips. But I don't understand what that matters as I am neither a talent scout nor a recruiting pro. If some poster on this site said they'd seen him play 100 times in person that wouldn't make their opinion of his skills or readiness at the next level any more credible. I don't trust what other fans say or those who are close to the player - hint, they tend to be very bias in their guy's favor. I base my opinion on what objective professionals say about players and what scouts say.
How many of those effective frosh PG starters around the country were converting from the frontcourt in h.s. and described as power guards or point forwards? I hope I'm wrong about Smith, but I just don't think he'll be ready to lead a NC contender as a frosh. Improving and developing is one thing, being ready/capable is another. Even as great as Conley was he started out slowly as a frosh and came on bigtime in the latter part of the year. Again though he was the only PG we've had in the last 25 years that was genuinely ready to play well as a frosh and lead a NC contender and he had a lot of advantages that Lenzelle doesn't have. Conley's don't come around too often!

I'm not saying not to post here but just say you might get more agreement with your thinking regarding Smith playing PG over there and Smith only. I just don't see any of the other posters over here who are more knowledgeable than myself agreeing with you.buckeydoptimist;1466672; said:Is your understanding somehow a prerequisite for posting here? I thought this was a public board for anyone to use and post their opinions and converse at. Some folks seem to get territorial and think they own the place!:tongue2: Open up your mind and get around more! There are a lot of posters with a lot of good takes out there. Just because I am not enamored with Smith as the only PG option come the 2010 season doesn't mean I don't like him or don't hope he is great. Must everyone believe the same as you? I was explaining my position, I find that more productive than jokes about Thad's nose. To each his own.

I could see Turner playing the PG and taking away some of Smith's minutes but I highly doubt if he will be around in 2010. Buford, even if he stays, just does not have the ball skills to play the PG. If anyone sees any playing time at the PG position next year between Turner and Buford, it will be Turner. The same things that apply to WB applied to Walter. They have no intention of giving him any time at the PG next year. Perhaps and 2010 if Offult ballhandling skills would greatly improve, he might see a little time but I highly doubt it.We're going to have a lot of good ball handlers in 2010 (especially if either WB or ET stick around), which should ease the pressure off that position. I think Lenzelle will be fine, and if we don't get another point guard, Offutt will be a junior by then and will most likely be able to put some time in at the position.
Lenzelle Smith, 6-3, Point Guard/Shooting guard, Zion Benton (IL), 2010: An Ohio State recruit, Smith fell to his future Buckeye teammate Sullinger in the 17-U finals. The husky combo guard threw his weight around and abused smaller defenders in the post, while also showing gorgeous court vision. As long as he is able to keep his weight under control, he should see some immediate playing time in Columbus as a frosh, given the Buckeye?s desperate need at the point guard position.
Lenzelle Smith- His body looks a lot better than it did last summer, and his game was impressive as well. At a powerful 6-foot-3, Smith ran the point almost the entire game for Rising Stars and produced the majority of offense. His passing ability has been well documented, but Smith also hit several pull up jumpers in the midrange and sank the one three-point attempt we saw him take.
Unfortunately Hewitt and Smith never defended each other. Both prospects are loaded with offensive skills. It is on the defensive end where they will be tested at the next level. And as for the questions concerning Ohio State's need for a point guard, they might just have one on the way in Smith, at least on the offensive end of the court.
