Zion-Benton survives late LIbertyville rally
December 12, 2009
By KEVIN REITERMAN [email protected]
This one had all of the makings of a blowout.
Led by senior man-child Lenzelle Smith, host Zion-Benton looked like it was going to run away and hide on Saturday night.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Smith, who will be playing Big Ten basketball at Ohio State next season, led all scorers with 20. He started well -- scoring 11 points in the opening frame. And he finished strong -- scoring seven of his team's final eight points.
?He was a load tonight," said Budge.
Lenzelle drops 40 on North Chicago
SRO crowd treated to amazing offensive show

It doesn't matter where North Chicago and Zion-Benton square off in prep boys basketball, it's going to be a heated, emotional contest.
It could be played in an empty gym in a summer league, or when the two groups of athletes get together for a pick-up game on the playground. It's the same thing.
Lenzelle Smith?s 40-point performance vaulted Zion-Benton past North Chicago on Friday night in front of a standing-room-only crowd in the Bee Hive.
So when the two longtime rivals battled on Friday in front of a standing-room-only crowd at Zion-Benton, the play was expectably passionate and exciting with plenty of trash-talking and highlight reel action.
An amazing 40-point performance from Zion senior guard Lenzelle Smith helped the Zee-Bees hold off the visiting Warhawks 86-76 in the non-conference clash.
"It's always big when we play North Chicago," said Smith. "Everyone gets into it, but we tried to look at it as just another game on our home floor which we wanted to win.
"But there was a little talking going on."
There was also a lot of oohing and aahing by the crowd on several highlight-reel plays by Smith, including numerous dunks on drives to the basket.
But Smith deflected praise for his play and directed it toward Zion post players Owen Worthington (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Cordaryus Craigen (16 points, 12 rebounds).
"Our big men really came through," said the Ohio State-bound Smith. "We knew we had the advantage inside, so we wanted to get our big guys the ball. Once we did, (North Chicago) couldn't stop them."
Well, it appears that his game where he fouled out and scored 7 points in a losing effort didn't make the thread :)OUatl;1622898; said:Getting more and more excited about this kid, after each update.
Thanks for bringing that up Downer DZ83CK this just shows that the kid still needs to work on his consistency. I guess that there's a reason that he isn't mentioned in the same sentence as Kobe, Lebron and DWade, YET :tongue2:DZ83CK;1623224; said:Well, it appears that his game where he fouled out and scored 7 points in a losing effort didn't make the thread :)
"Ohio State recruit Lenzelle Smith scored only seven points before fouling out of Zion-Benton's 68-56 loss to Stevenson"
This is all you can find if you search for it on Google, but it was one of those "On the Trail" updates from ESPN/Scout's Inc. for a game that was played 12/8/09.

Lenzelle Smith can't remember the last game he played when he did not knock down a 3-pointer.
"Maybe my freshman year?" laughed the talented Zion-Benton High senior guard.
Lenzelle Smith played maestro Friday night, directing Zion-Benton to a solid victory over Stevenson. On this play, The Zee-Bee star scored two of his game-high 26 points.

Smith had a rough time finding the range on his perimeter shot during Friday's North Suburban Conference Lake Division battle with visiting Stevenson, but he definitely found other ways to hurt the Patriots in a 57-43 Zee-Bee victory.
Smith piled up a game-high 26 points with strength work in the paint and on the glass, plus contributed 11 rebounds and 7 assists.
"This was one of my better all-around games," said Smith. "I worked hard inside and tried to get my teammates involved.
"If we get rolling, we are going to be hard to beat in the (North Suburban Conference) Lake Division."
Zion-Benton (13-7 overall, 5-2 in the NSC Lake) stayed one game behind first-place Lake Forest, while the Patriots (12-6, 5-3) fell two losses back. The win also avenged an earlier loss for the Zee-Bees to Stevenson in Lincolnshire.
"I was coming off my ankle injury and didn't play at my best (in the loss at Stevenson), so I wanted to come out and prove I was a better player this time," said Smith.
Boys basketball: Zion-Benton 65, Buffalo Grove 59
Boys basketball: Ohio State recruit Lenzelle Smith leads Zion-Benton past Buffalo Grove
Zion-Benton guard Lenzelle Smith picked up two quick fouls at the outset of the second quarter Saturday in a nonconference game against Buffalo Grove, prompting coach Don Kloth to sit his Ohio State-bound star.
But Smith returned to score nine in the third quarter and 11 more in the fourth of a 65-59 victory. He finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds.
"I'm just proud of my team that they kept the lead and they kept playing tough without me, so that's always a bonus," said Smith, who finished with three fouls. "I tried to distance the score (in the second half) just in case I got in foul trouble and had to come out of the game."
Smith scored seven points in the first quarter as the Zee-Bee's took a 19-17 lead. While Smith sat in the second, Buffalo Grove went on a 9-0 run, started by Kevin Mulligan (team-high 16 points), and the led 30-29 at halftime.
There were six lead changes in the third quarter, with Buffalo Grove taking its last, 40-39, on a layup by Dan Recht with 2 minutes, 51 seconds left.
Dondre Osborne began the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to put Zion (16-9) up 49-42. The Bison (11-10) didn't quit, climbing to within three points four times in the final 3:10. After two Mulligan free throws made it 62-59 with 18 seconds left, Smith went 3-for-4 from the line.
"We just knew that they were going to compete," Smith said. "They're a tough team. We just made sure that we made every point count."
The taller Zee-Bees outrebounded Buffalo Grove 38-21.

Just a teenager, Lenzelle Smith not only has a plan, he's already got a backup plan.
"I know that one day the ball is going to stop bouncing," said Smith, a senior at Zion-Benton and one of the best basketball players in Lake County.
Currently averaging nearly a triple-double, he will be playing basketball on scholarship next year at Ohio State.
"Anyone who plays a sport wants something that will separate them," Smith said. "I figure why not have it be education for me."
Smith, a National Honor Society student who has maintained a 4.0 grade point average every semester of his high school career and is currently riding a 4.1 GPA, certainly stands out from the crowd.
"I'm so competitive that I'm always trying to be the best player and get the best grades," said Smith, who is interested in pursuing sports management as a career. "I'm proud of everything I've done with basketball and with school, but I think, in the long run, my academics are probably going to pay off more."
