SG Lenzelle Smith (Hapoel Eilat - Israel)

Interesting article. Lenzelle you can tell is a high character kid, definitely a solid person to bring into your program. I don't think we talk enough about how Matta gets a lot of guys who have great character. OSU hasn't had an off-court incident basically since Matta's been there (JJ Sullinger DUI is the last I can remember - I don't count the Lighty plastic BB incident while in HS!). The article goes on to say Lenzelle averages 21/10/7 - basically what ET averages for OSU! Iowa commit Brust who plays in the same league reportedly averages 26/6.5/5.

Slamming good time for Smith, Zion-Benton

The final buzzer sounded on his team's 79-75 victory, and then Lenzelle Smith remembered what he had told Zion-Benton's student fans.

So, as he dribbled unguarded near the foul line, the Zee-Bees senior suddenly tossed the basketball off the backboard, grabbed it before it hit the court and threw down a vicious left-handed slam dunk.

Let the celebration begin.

The athletic maneuver was superfluous, as it capped a night that had already provided more than enough thrills, including a furious fourth-quarter frenzy by host North Chicago in Wednesday's North Suburban Conference boys basketball championship game.

"It just was just something that I told (Zion-Benton's fans) before the game that I was going to do," Smith said of his flashy dunk, which didn't count. "I forgot all about it during the game because I was trying to get the 'W.'"

That's what Zion-Benton wanted most of all, and Smith helped deliver the Zee-Bees' second NSC title in three years and fifth overall in nine seasons.

His 28 points, 17 rebounds and 7 assists helped Zion-Benton (20-10) overcome a gutsy effort by North Chicago (17-7)

Lenzelle's season ended in early March with an upset loss to Hoffman Estates, 55-46. Z-B was seeded 6 and Hoffman 11th. Smith had a game-high 26 points, including all of his teams points in the fourth quarter, and 8 rebounds. Z-B had the lead from 2:38 in the first quarter until 2:09 left in the game. Smith got called for an intentional foul with 8.8 seconds left and got a technical foul for his reaction to the intentional foul call.

i haven't seen much of lenzelle's play; therefore, rivals' labeling of him as the best ball-handler of the forwards certainly gives me more confidence in next season's backcourt.
Yep. Smith could be the best ballhandler and passer on the team next year - hopefully he gets in shape and works hard to hone those skills & is ready to contribute right away. I really don't know what to expect from him - could be a key player at PG, could be a guy who barely plays.

If any of you are from the LA area, Lenzelle is planning on coming to a gym near you on May 1st. He is slated to participate in the Feinberg Academic All-American Classic (AAAC).

One thing I found odd was Lenzelle (along with several others) was slated to play in a Lake County (IL) Senior Shootout last Friday but he (again, along with several others) pulled out due to rules about playing in too many all-star games - the thing is, I can't find any other all-star games that he is lined up to play in & I'm pretty sure 1 all-star game isn't too many. I'd like to know what other game he might be playing in.

Good news for those of you wanting a sneak peak of Lenzelle - the all-star game that he's playing in will apparently be streaming live online on this Saturday, May 1st, at 7:30 PM.
High School Academic All-American Classic
Lenzelle is on the roster of the National team:
National All-Stars
He's listed there as being 6'4" 215# and with a 4.1 GPA. It appears his profile pic there was taken at the OSU-USC game.

Interestingly, the place that this game is being played is Azusa Pacific, which is the same place that Brayden Bell ended up (last I heard, he transferred there from Utah State).

Ohio State's next Evan Turner?
April, 30, 2010
By Diamond Leung

AZUSA, Calif. -- Lenzelle Smith, Jr., a guard set to start his freshman season at Ohio State, said he's heard it more times than he can count that he's the next Evan Turner.

Smith, Jr.

"Every time I hear it, it's great," Smith said after practice for Saturday's High School Academic All-American Classic. "Those are big shoes to fill.

"I don't think it's totally far-fetched."

Replacing a national player of the year won't be easy, of course, but Smith said he shares similarities with Turner and appears comfortable making the comparison with his former AAU teammate.

With Turner leaving school after his junior season as a projected top NBA draft pick, Smith is expected to get a shot to play point guard. At 6-foot-4, he has good size for a player who can distribute the basketball.

Smith is leaving high school with a 4.1 grade-point average. He and Turner briefly played together with the Illinois Stars when Smith was in the eighth grade.

"He calls me his little brother," Smith said.
