SG Jon Diebler (2nd-Most Big Ten career 3-Pointers, Butler Recruiting Director)

Diebler was very impressive against Syracuse. Good judgment on his shots, some of the best D I have seen from him and even starting to drive. His stroke is the last thing I am worried about. He is a shooter and it will come.

Also, he showed good/great ball handling skills tonight. He had the ball in his hands quite a bit on the perimeter and was used pretty extensively to break the full court press.

I think Jon showed some very good improvement tonight. He still rushed a couple shots and passed some up too. His D improved a lot and in the 2nd half he started to settle in and made some shots.
He still has a ways to go but overall he did very well.

Jon impressed me most when he blew by the 'Cuse defender on his way to the rack. The 'Cuse player clearly was surprised by Jon's quickness and athleticism. If he can start slashing, he will open up his outside game.

I saw him do that and thought wow. As he gets used to the college level he will get his recognition back of when to shoot and how to get open. He has the ability to blow by some people for sure. I can hardly wait for him to start lighting someone up.

Thing about Jon is that he came from a situation where he was taking the majority of the shots and was given free reign to create. Right now he's hesitant because he's new and doesn't know his place within the frame of the team. It's kind of like David Lighty last year compared to this year. Last year he didn't do certain things that he could have done; this year he's more confident, partially because the big 3 are gone, and he's playing more freely, like he did as a star in high school.

I don't doubt that Jon could average 10 points, right now, if he wanted. He's just getting used to his place within the team and trying to widen the rope on what he'll be allowed to do.

He plays like a smart player, but he also plays like everything I said above, plus an inexperienced player. The drive he took, when he was called for a charge, after the drive that he scored on shows his inexperience at the college level; the charge he took shows his intelligence and discipline.

Jon is a scorer, no one can deny that. All he needs is to not forget that he's a scorer and to not shy away from being what he can be, having a deer in headlights mentality.

OSU men's basketball: Diebler looking for way out of shooting slump

Ohio State guard Jon Diebler has missed 31 of 35 shots from the field in his first five games for Ohio State.

Keith Diebler took his camera with him to New York last week. He was not the typical sightseer, though.
He was there to shoot his son shooting, and to try -- along with the rest of Buckeye Nation -- to figure out why Jon Diebler, the leading scorer in Ohio high school basketball history, can't make a basket in his first season in college.
"I took some still-action pictures of him shooting during warm-ups," Keith said. "I took some during the game. I got some looks where I think he's doing some things (wrong) mechanically that are more habitual than anything."
Jon Diebler, who scored 3,208 points in four seasons at Upper Sandusky High School, where his father is the coach, has missed 31 of 35 shots from the field in his first five games for Ohio State, including 22 of 24 three-point tries.

Continued.....

He remains confident Diebler will.
"If he wasn't making them in practice, if he wasn't (making them in) skill instruction, I'd be really concerned," Matta said. "I think it's a matter of time."
So does Diebler's father.
"In two weeks, we won't be talking about this," he said.

Buckeyes Notebook: Diebler struggling mightily with his shot

MIKE POPOVICH

COLUMBUS ? Ohio high school?s all-time leading scorer is experiencing a drought he never could have imagined.

Buckeyes freshman guard Jon Diebler enters tonight?s game against No. 1 North Carolina (9 p.m., ESPN) averaging just 5 points and shooting a little more than 11 percent (4-of-35) from the field. Diebler?s ability to get to the free-throw line, where he is 15-of-19, has helped.
Ohio State coach Thad Matta is taking a wait-and-you?ll-see approach with Diebler.

I really like the way that JD plays, after watching him thus far, and comparing his shot to his form in highlight reels from high school, you can certainly tell a difference in comfort and form.

Each time he sets up for the 3, it seems he has a tad different motion in shooting form. Once he shakes the willies and finds his rhythm, he will come around.

My feeling is some people in one season have became accustomed to the 'Freshman Phenom' and are not willing to be patient.
