More than game on Rams? minds
By Pat Magers

COLUMBUS ? It was with heavy hearts Upper Sandusky basketball personnel in general and Keith and Jon Diebler in particular went about the business of trying to nail down the school?s second state championship in three years at Value City Arena Saturday.

Bill Diebler, Keith?s father and Jon?s grandfather, died late Wednesday night.

?It?s tough because a lot of the things I say and do as a coach, I learned from him,? Keith Diebler said, noting his father coached him in Little League. ?One of the things he taught me was you?ve got to make the team believe that they could beat the New York Yankees.

im well aware of that. but hell likely play the role of "designated shooter" the next two years or so.

an example of this weekends game might be humphries at florida. likely others will create for diebler and hell be stabbing daggers in the other team.

I know, but if they play him tight and try not to let him shoot he can beat them off the dribble...

I can see Diebler filling that role on next year's squad and I have to be honest, at the beginning of the season I thought their was a slim chance that Diebler would come in to OSU and play quality minutes in his first year, but at this point, I feel he may have that opportunity. How can Matta not get him on the court just for his ability to shoot alone? Similar to Cook, he may struggle early with defense but his scoring ability from the perimeter is something any team would love to have.

Next year's team is going to be very deep - it will be interesting to see how TM handles this "rich" problem.

Assuming Oden stays, there will be 2-3 guys that will see major minutes if they leave the court at alll (Conley, Butler, [Oden]), some vets that have earned lots of time (Hunter, Cook, Lighty), two solid upper-classmen big backupus (Twigs, Madsen), and Kosta will have to be on the court... that leaves scraps for Diebler and Turner... I'm not saying that Diebler won't play quality minutes, I'm just saying that minutes on next year's squad will be sparse as it is. This is a great problem to have and it will be exciting to see how it works itself out.

I agree that Diebler's perimeter game will be a HUGE asset - I think his consistency in his role will determine his playing time next year.

all about the AAU

Kids get the hype on the AAU circuit and Jon has never excelled there. For one he had mono one summer. But I digress I doubt he is listed as one of the Top 25 incoming players. Turner had a better chance.

How did Diebler get passed up for the McDonalds game? His stats are just sick and he's a great kid.

He doesn't play for a "name" HS, or a big time AAU team. Level of competition is a big thing for the McD's team. I'm sure he is as good as the Calathes kid going to UF......

The Big question is.... will he be able to get open against college speed. Obviously he can score against high schoolers and he can shoot lights out.
His average will go down, the question is how much.
If he averages say 20 per game i'm sure we will all be happy. But what if this kid is the next Burson, the next Pistol Pete ?
The possibilities boggle the mind.

Jon will do great. I have watched him for years now and there will be no problem. He will need to add a few pounds for stamina but no one will stop him. I am sure of that.
