i think you hit on a key thing here. jon has to use his dribble, he is more effective than he gives himself credit for off the boucne. balancing attacking, pulling up, shooting and passing (at all three levels mentioned) will be important for jon. i also feel that competing with his teammates for mins while providing leadership and helping develop bufford and the other wings will be important for diebler this year.
I know he is at a different level now but he did all of those things quite well off the dribble when he was in high school. Hopefully, it is just a confidence thing and will come back to him.

Once again, real early but I see some of the same issues he had last year.....a lack of confidence to let it fly when he is clearly open and absolutely no confidence in more than two or three bounces before he looks to pass......once again only after one game.......he took a small step....stay tuned for next Monday.

I think you're right here. Saw him pass up open looks several times. Conversely, I saw the freshman Buford take just about every open look he got...he looked very confident in his shot. With that said, Diebs had a couple nice feeds, one in particular to someone down low that really threaded the needle. But he really needs to dribble drive some more to take his game to the next level. Quite often he just seems to hover on the perimeter.

When he did shoot though, his shot looked pretty smooth. I think I saw him miss 2 and they were both just a bit long and hit back iron. And he plays defense hard which is a must.

As you said...we shall see right?

I am not trying to be negative, so I guess I should try to balance out my posts with some positive aspects of his performance and as already stated he had several good passes and played solid defense, but his role is to provide that perimeter shot........he needs to quit thinking about how many shots he has taken and just let it go when open......it is a must he take those type of shots now because down the road he will be counted on to take and hit those shots......once again....early.

I may be critical......I just know there is more to his game than one dribble and shoot......he can hit every shot on the floor and I want him to be successful......it is all confidence.........

at the sametime bufford comes off the bench firing away-game in hand nothing to lose. on the flip side i felt turner didnt move the ball enough, he took the shots and drove with "confidence" that resluted in some turnovers, when an easy pass would have led to a layup and/or easy baskets.

i walked away happy with the performances-but saw room for improvement...

hes done them quite well in college. i think it may be a confidence thing. underconfidence leds to people overthinking and underreacting...

I thought that there was only one key to the game and it involved "scoring the most points".

"a key thing" and the "major key to the game" should not be confused, EVER!

Wow, just when I thought I had it figured out, you throw this out there. So confusing.

I agree that its just a lack of confidence out there sometimes, but I also think OSUBJ hit on another big thing- at times, it seems like he is reluctant to shoot too much, even if he is hitting his shots. It seems, to me at least, like he doesn't want to be seen as a ballhog (by his teammates and coaches) who will shoot whenever he touches it. It almost looks like he needs someone, and I think it needs to be one of his veteran teammates like Lighty or Turner to come over to him and say, "don't worry about how many shots your taking, we know your a great shooter, if your open take it and if you miss it happens we wont think any less of you for shooting when your open." Now they very well may have said this to him already, and if not I hope they do say this to him because I feel like thats what he needs right now is confidence, and that is a surefire way to build his confidence in his shot back up.

I have said it a million times- I am continuously amazed with Diebler's basketball IQ. However, I think at times it gets him into trouble, because I feel at times like he is thinking way too much, trying to make the extra pass too often, instead of just playing loose out there. It seems like, on some of the shots he is missing, his eyes are darting all over the court until he has already elevated to shoot, rather than him realizing he has an open shot and concentrating on taking it and making it.
