Rams send Clyde flying
By Dave Feltner, dfeltner@advertiser-tribune

ASHLAND ? Clyde?s offensive numbers after one quarter of Tuesday night?s Division II district semifinal suggest maybe the Fliers weren?t so bad off against 10th-ranked Upper Sandusky.

Clyde made 8-of-10 field goals, won the rebounding, 9-3, and posted a nifty 21 points.

But even with that going for them, any objective viewer could tell this was a team in dire straits.

At the other end, the Rams were knocking down nine 3-pointers during the game?s first 7:09 on their way to a 39-point quarter. The Fliers were guilty of 13 first-quarter turnovers ? 40 for the game ? and Upper Sandusky found little resistance in moving on to Saturday?s final against Lexington with a 99-73 victory.

Cont'd...

Let's just assume Upper Sandusky gets past Lexington, as they are, at this point, certainly favored. My alma mater Van Wert takes on Wapakoneta for the Bowling Green District Championship, in which the first meeting of the same two schools yielded a result of Van Wert winning 65-44. If you fast forward, my Cougars are up against Jon Diebler, with a slight bias going both ways if possible :wink2: What do I do? No doubt about it, I am a Cougar. And more importantly, I've got friends and we all want tickets!!! If you are still reading, I would like to advertise for Chris Morrow, a 6'6" reason that Van Wert matters.

ASHLAND ? With the scoreboard reading 39-21 in his team's favor, Jon Diebler led the Upper Sandusky High School basketball team with 16 points. They had played eight minutes of basketball.
By the end of the game, when the No. 10 Rams topped Clyde 99-73 in a Division II district semifinal Wednesday at Ashland University, the 6-foot-7 point guard had scored 41 points. It was almost his average.

The legend grows for 'average guy' Diebler

Ohio scoring champ is 'goofy and normal,' but still more myth than reality to basketball fans across the state.

UPPER SANDUSKY ? Each Sunday, Jon Diebler slides into Upper Sandusky High School, the partly teal, 46-year-old building that contains a basketball gym lovingly nicknamed "The Barn."
With workout partner Claire Aubry, herself a standout basketball player, Diebler will shoot. He makes layups, NBA-sized 3-pointers and goes through dribbling drills near the rolled-up stands for which there's a season-ticket waiting list 50 gawkers deep.

From the Daily chief union;
Area player, coach earn big honors
Upper Sandusky's Jon Diebler headlines a list of All-Northwest District selections released by the Associated Press on Thursday.
Diebler, a senior, broke the 3,000-point scoring plateau and became Ohio's all-time scoring leader this season by surpassing Jay Burson's scoring record of 2,958 points in the regular season finale.
"It's a great accomplishment, not only for me, but for our team. Without them, I wouldn't have won this," Diebler said.
He averaged a stunning 42.8 points per game during the regular season, but he was not just a force shooting the ball for the Rams. Diebler also led the league in assists and steals, with 7 and 5.2 per game, respectively. He also was the Northern Ohio League's second-leading rebounder with 13.5 per game.
Diebler was not the only Rams' player recognzied on the all-district list. Alex Falk was named to the Division II third team and Drew McClellan was an honorable mention. Falk, a sophomore, was third in the NOL in scoring with 24.4 points and added 6.8 rebounds and 3 steals per game.
Wynford's John Shifley also earned a third-team selection in Divison IV, which was the highest among the rest of the area players. Shifley was third in the North Central Conference in scoring with 15.8 points per game and in rebounding with eight per contest.
There were an abundance of area players which were mentioned as honorable selections. They included Carey's Vincent Windau, Michael Dennis and Derrick Cole; Mohawk's Connor Jump, Keith Ziegler and Nathaniel Kurtz, Riverdale's Justin VanAtta and Wynford's Chad Snyder.

For anyone wishing to follow along, Upper Sandusky would play the winner of Van Wert vs. Wapakoneta Thursday night in Toledo.

Van Wert 6 Wapak 2 after 1
Van Wert 16 Wapak 12 at Halftime
Van Wert 34 Wapak 20 after 3
Van Wert 53 Wapak 44 Final

Van Wert allowed Wapak to chip away at a much bigger lead in the 4th quarter by struggling mightily from the free throw line, and that is a big understatement. If you want to listen to the VW-Upper game Thursday night, hit the WERT link on vwindependent.com.

...and so now on the other end of things, Upper is leading Lexington at the half 50-44. Jon has 21.

EDIT: End of 3rd quarter, Upper 70 Lexington 65. Jon has 29 points and 3 fouls.
Whitelock (?) for Lexington has 28.

EDIT: Wow. It's all over folks. Upper takes down Lexington 100-92 in what must have been an absolute thriller. Jon finished with 43 and his teammate Falk also "chipped in" with 31. Whitelock of Lexington finished with 38.

Upper Sandusky vs. Van Wert Thursday 7pm Savage Hall in Toledo www.vwindependent.com WERT link to listen to the game.
