SCORING BLIZZARDS
Diebler should top Burson on points list

When Jay Burson broke the Ohio high school career scoring record at New Concord John Glenn in 1985, former record holder Rex Leach was there to congratulate him.

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

During the recent rash of "snow days," Jon Diebler did not spend the unexpected free time sleeping in, playing video games or watching the cornucopia of nonsense on television.
Diebler was in the gym - shooting, working on his ball-handling, and then shooting some more. More than 20 years ago, another Ohio scoring machine did not while away those calamity days, either. If school was called off, Jay Burson would bundle up, make his way to the gym, and go through basically the same routine that Diebler follows today. Those two individuals, those two careers, and those two timelines in Ohio high school basketball history converge tomorrow night at Upper Sandusky High School, where Diebler is likely to get the 42 points he needs to tie Burson as the state's all-time leading scorer.

Diebler-mania running wild

IT'S just a few minutes before game time, the Upper Sandusky Rams are ready to begin warming up and Ohio's future all-time leading scorer is hovering over the drinking fountain throwing up.

This isn't nerves, even though with every shot, Jon Diebler inches closer and closer to greatness. Most of the spectators in the sold-out crowd at Tiffin Columbian came to see if he could duplicate the 77 points he scored in that gym last year. But that's hardly a reason to get nervous.

All of Upper Sandusky's games have taken on a rock concert feeling this year, complete with capacity crowds and strangers coming up to say hello and ask for an autograph. It's why Diebler is now one of the rare high school kids who needs a police escort at all games.

i called wmfd to verify. the operator stated that the game would be available starting at midnight, though the game is, of course, earlier. again, go to wmfd's gameroom.

I think he finished with the 44................
When Hornyack was playing, he averaged 43 his junior year and 42.6 his senior year.
It's an amazing thing to watch a guy like that when he's hitting. :yow1:
Check JJ Huddle.

Wow - how many points did Jon put away tonight? I read he had 44 points with 2:51 to go in the game.
And we need a vBEt on how much he raises the bar during the playoffs.
I believe he ended with 44. I wouldn't be surprised if he was taken out of the game after he broke the record and the game stoppage. He now only needs 41 points to become the first Ohio high school player to score 3,000. That should come next week in the sectional finals. I can't wait for the video to be posted so I can witness history.
