SF William Buford - 4 BTT Title Games, most Buckeye starts (Virtus Roma - Italy)

Ohio State's William Buford, Jared Sullinger Officially Invited To NBA Combine

May 22 by Matt Brigidi

On Tuesday afternoon, the NBA officially announced the names of the players invited to the Draft Combine being held in Chicago on June 7-8 and the Ohio State Buckeyes had two representatives in the form of senior guard William Buford and sophomore power forward Jared Sullinger.

Sullinger and Buford were both members of the Ohio State team that reached the Final Four this past season. Sullinger was expected to enter the draft last year, but decided to return to Ohio State for his sophomore season. Now, he has decided to test his value at the next level. Sullinger averaged 17.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game during the 2011-12 season and was a Sporting News first-team All-American in 2012 (in addition to 2011). He is projected by many sources to be a Top-10 pick in this year's draft.

Buford averaged 14.5 points, 5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game this year. He is projected as the 52nd best player in the Top 100 on DraftExpress.com.

Wizards work out Ohio State's Buford
May 25, 2012

So there I am in the bowels of the Verizon Center on Thursday, waiting to conduct interviews with members of the Washington Mystics for a game preview story. As the ladies finished off practice, a bunch of young and tall male ballers wearing Wizards practice jerseys were headed onto the practice court.

The Wizards NBA Draft workout sessions had begun.

Ohio State's William Buford headlined this group of six. Draft Express ranks the 6-foot-5 swingman as the No. 52 overall prospect after he averaged 14.5 points and shot 36 percent from 3-point range as a senior. The Wizards own two second-round selections and are thought to be in the market for two-guard depth.

I've pinpointed five shooting guards and five point guards the Knicks could pick at No. 48 (for offense and defense).

First, for shooting guards:

1. William Buford (Ohio State) -- Buford's four years in college paid off, as he became a smarter player over time. He's very active moving without the ball -- something the Knicks need more of -- and knows how to come off screens to hit mid-range jumpshots, as well as attack and finish with creativity and strength (he's 6-6, 220). He's also active on defense and jumps out on passing lanes well. Where he has to improve is 3-point consistency (he went from 44.2 percent as a junior to 35.8 last year) and creating for himself better off the triple threat.

Um, showing up with the 3rd worst body fat percentage at an NBA Combine with 60 top players isn't good.

1. J'Covan Brown 12.5%
2. Miles Plumlee 11.4
3. Draymond Green 11.3
3. William Buford 11.3

Doesn't sound right...

Draft prospects murky for ex-Buckeye Buford
BY DAVID BRIGGS
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Draft-prospects-murky-for-ex-Buckeye-Buford.jpg

Ex-Libbey star William Buford saw his 3-point shooting percentage fall to 36 percent last season. Ex-Libbey star William Buford saw his 3-point shooting percentage fall to 36 percent last season. THE OZONE.NET/JIM DAVIDSON

William Buford's excellent NBA adventure has taken him from Boston to Miami, with stops in Cleveland and Detroit in between.

The former Ohio State and Libbey star worked out for seven teams over the last month and spent the last two days among 60 draft hopefuls at the NBA combine in Chicago. He has endured countless interviews, drills, and measurements. (Buford's hand, for the record, is 10 inches wide.)

Teams know everything about him, and yet Buford remains one of the draft's most debated prospects.

For all of the 6-foot-5 Toledo native's physical gifts, he remains an enigma to many league officials. The same deadeye, for instance, who hit 44 percent of his 3-pointers as a junior hit 36 percent last season. Buford, who averaged a career-high 14.5 points, starred some nights and vanished on others.

"All the scouts saw the same thing I saw, a guy who is inconsistent," said Joe Kotoch, a Cleveland-based agent who runs probasketballdraft.com. "They want to see him in these workouts prove them wrong and show them something he wasn't always able to show in college."

As it stands, most mock drafts project Buford as a mid-to-late second round pick. Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com said Buford is among 30 players "in that 40 to 60 range."

Buford, who could not be reached Friday, has plenty going for him. He has good range, size, and offensive skills. Buford is also regarded as a strong defender and a team player, two key traits organizations look for in potential contributors off the bench.

"He's played at a very high level for the last four years, played in a lot of big games," Givony said. "There's no transition inherent for him to become a role player. That's what his role was at Ohio State. In that regard, that's an advantage for him."

Buford told Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon-Journal that his percentage had "never been that high." He said he'd been sick and gained a few pounds, "but that's no excuse for my body fat. I need to get into the weight room and turn it into muscle."

It's too late for that now, at least as far as the draft is concerned. Buford might as well have 11.3 tattooed on his stomach. It could raise red flags about his off-season work ethic outside the gym and affect his draft position, which was projected second-round anyway.

2012 NBA Draft Combine notebook: Ohio State?s William Buford disappoints on, off court

By Jason Lloyd
Beacon Journal sports writer
Updated: June 9, 2012

CHICAGO: Ohio State?s William Buford made an impression at the NBA combine this week, but for nothing he?d like to remember. Buford measured in with 11.3 percent body fat, tied for the second-highest among the attending players.

Buford was surprised the figure was so high and said he has been ill in recent weeks. He recently fought off a stomach virus and added a few pounds.

?But that?s no excuse for my body fat,? Buford said. ?It?s never been that high.?

Questions about Buford?s conditioning were already surfacing and his body fat count doesn?t help. Buford averaged 14.5 points and 5.0 rebounds as a senior, but shot 42 percent from the field and 35 percent on 3-pointers, both career lows. He is projected as a second-round pick, but isn?t a lock to be drafted.

?Going into the league, it?s a clean slate,? Buford said. ?Wherever I get drafted, I?ll get a clean slate to make a name for myself.?

NBA Draft?s Potential Celtics: Ohio State SG William Buford 06.11.12
By Jashvina Shah

As part of WEEI.com?s coverage of the 2012 NBA draft, we are profiling all players considered likely candidates to be drafted June 28. The Celtics own three picks: 21, 22 (from the Thunder in the Kendrick Perkins trade) and 51.

Buford_William-Ohio-State-12-20-11.jpg

William Buford averaged 14.5 points in helping Ohio State to the Final Four last season. (AP)

WILLIAM BUFORD

Position: Shooting guard

School: Ohio State

Age: 22

Height: 6-foot-5

Weight: 215 pounds

Achievements: Wooden Award top 25 (2012), Big Ten All-Tournament team (2011), NABC second team District 7 (2011), Big Ten Freshman of the Year (2009), Big Ten All-Freshman team (2009), honorable mention All-Big Ten (2009)

Key 2011-12 stats: 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 33.8 minutes

What he brings: Buford, who averaged 13.7 points per game in his four seasons as a Buckeye, can shoot from multiple places on the court and finished his career hitting 44 percent of his shots. But he?s a shooter who doesn?t shine in any other categories.

Another issue is his consistency. His 3-point shooting percentage dropped from 44.2 his junior year to a career-low 35.8 his senior year. Other aspects of Buford?s game have fluctuated. He ran into a slump during the NCAA tournament and went 1-for-8 from the field in Ohio State?s Sweet 16 victory over Cincinnati.

The Toledo native hasn?t been spectacular at getting to the line, and that aspect of his game has been inconsistent. He took 118 free throw attempts a sophomore, dipped to 70 as a junior, then got the number to 113 as a senior.
