William Buford will begin his professional basketball career overseas.

The former Libbey and Ohio State star will play this season in Santiago, Spain for Obradoiro in one of Europe's top leagues after deciding it would be a long shot to make an NBA roster as a rookie. Buford, who was named Mr. Ohio as the state?s top basketball player in 2008 and started four years at OSU, played for the Minnesota Timberwolves' entry in the NBA Summer League.

"I just thought this was a great opportunity," Buford said during his introductory press conference in Spain. "I thought trying to make it to the NBA this year was kind of a risk so I figured why not come to the best league besides the NBA."

Buford, one of two Americans on Obradoiro along with former Purdue star and Timberwolves second-round draft pick Robbie Hummel, said playing in the NBA was his ultimate goal but called his latest venture "the opportunity of a lifetime."

"I'm just excited and ready to work hard, come in and try to earn a spot," Buford said.

became good friends with Robbie Hummel overseas...

Hummel is glad to be back in the United States but enjoyed his year in Spain, thanks in large part to being a teammate of former Ohio State standout guard William Buford, who had a tryout this week with the Utah Jazz.

?Having William there with me was a life-saver,? Hummel said. ?We didn?t know each other that well in college, but we?ve become really good friends. Without him, it would have been much harder. You are not used to being away from home. We were going through the same stuff at the same time.?

SANTA CRUZ -- What wound up taking "months" to fully adjust to, William Buford instead had about two to three weeks to prepare for the rules and parameters of international basketball before suiting up to play last season in Liga ACB, the top professional league in Spain.

He'll have a similar time frame to prepare for the D-League when he suits up for the Santa Cruz Warriors this season. But no need to worry over any lengthy adjustment period for the 6-foot-5, 215-pound shooting guard.

"The rules are totally different over there, they'll get you. I got called for a lot of travels," laughed Buford, who returned from Spain in late May and ended up as the Warriors' first-round pick last Friday following a flurry of trades by the team.

"But I like this style way better. I mean, I'm so used to this style," he said of playing in the United States -- not overseas. "This is what I've been playing all my life.

"To go over there and change my style of play, it just took a while."

William Buford signs with Virtus Roma

The former Ohio State shooting guard agreed to a one-year deal with Pallacanestro Virtus Roma, Virtus Roma for short, late last week. He will replace former South Dakota State guard Skyler Flatten on Virtus Roma's roster.

Since college, Buford has bounced from team to team, largely playing in Europe. After going undrafted in 2012, Buford played with the Minnesota Timberwolves Summer League team but did not make the final roster. He spent time in Germany, Spain, France, the NBA G-League and most recent in Greece with G.S. Lavrio B.C.

Each of the last three summers, Buford joined former Buckeye teammates in The Basketball Tournament, a single-elimination tournament with a $2 million, winner take all prize. After two years of disappointment, Carmen's Crew finally won the TBT, defeating four-time defending champion Overseas Elite along the way. Buford was named the TBT's Most Valuable Player.
