SF LaQuinton Ross (Memphis Hustle - NBA G-League)

Meanwhile, freshman LaQuinton Ross practiced for the first time with the team today. He arrived in Columbus on Saturday night from his home in Jackson, Miss. The team did not practice Sunday.

"We put him through a skill instruction yesterday and he actually worked out with us a little bit today," Matta said.

"I told (assistant coach) Dave Dickerson during practice (that) it?s amazing what you assume as a coach. We all found ourselves saying stuff to him today, and he doesn?t know what exactly we?re talking about. So I think from that perspective, it?s going to take him some time.

"What he?s been doing (at home) in his workouts and that sort of thing, the chairs and orange cones you?re driving around now have arms and feet and they can move. So it?s going to take him a little bit of time. But hopefully over the course (of the season), we can get him back and ready to go."

Matta said Ross was "OK" from a conditioning standpoint.

"We?ll see how he feels tomorrow after going through a full practice."

Sounds like he's further behind than we would've liked. Not sure what they are talking about when they said, "We were telling him things and he didnt know what we were talking about" but it doesnt sound good. I hope thats just some terminology that he needs to get re-acquainted with.

Give 100% LQ and the rest will pan out.

ya i think this sounds alot worse then it actually is...and i think it had to pretty much do with basketball terminology...he obviously doesnt know any of the plays yet so im sure everything is just overwhelming him at this point...give him a week and he will be fine

I hope he gets some PT in these games before the B1G starts. He will be pivotal in winning the conference/making a tournament run.

I don't see this. Every year we say this is the year its going to be different because we finally have depth, and every year we are proven wrong. Thad just doesn't play more than 7 or maybe 8 guys. I know a ton of people spoke highly of Q during the off season but with as much time as he missed I just don't think he'll be a factor unless Sully misses significant time.

It makes me wonder when he will see playing time with only Miami left for the beginning of the Big 10 season. I certainly cannot see him redshirting.

- One player who was thought could remedy the team's spotty perimeter shooting is freshman guard LaQuinton Ross. But Ross has not played in the three games for which he has been in uniform since becoming eligible, and Matta sounded as if Ross is still a ways from seeing the floor in a game.
The holdup? This is not the best time of the season to shepherd a newcomer.

"What?s hard is, since he?s been back, the schedule we?ve been on has been difficult," Matta said. "We?ve tried to do some things to get him more ready, but we?re not doing the 2 1/2-hour practices. He?s doing everything we?re asking him to do. We?ve got to continue to bring him along the best we possibly can."

If the schedule is difficult between SCUS, USC and Lamar, he's in a brutal spot with the BiG conference starting up. Hopefully he can get his conditioning in order over the holidays and start to make an impact by the New Year.

We need the extra perimeter threat, especially with Sully gimpy

The cupcakes are done except for Miami. Northwestern comes to town on the 27th and we go to Indiana on the 31st.

I don't think it is so much of a conditioning factor with Ross because he probably kept in pretty good shape while he was at home studying:wink: I don't think any of us realize how sophisticated Ohio State's basketball sets on offense and defense really are. I think compared to high school and they are really sophisticated and that is what Ross needs to learn. He has to know where to be when he is on the floor both offensively and defensively.

And I could be entirely wrong:)

I think what Thad meant was that the schedule was preventing them from having as much practice as they typically would have---which, in turn, is making it more difficult for Ross to get up to speed.

That's scary considering the standing around on the perimeter (offense), and inability to switch in man-to-man (defense) a lot of the time. :tongue2:

The comments I have read from Matta indicate that conditioning is very much a factor (something to the effect that Ross thought he was keeping in shape).

So far as depth is concerned I already see Matta going 9 deep with more play from Williams and Thompson.

That said, if Ross can learn the D and we need an outside shooter in a particular circumstance I am confident he can achieve a conditioning level that will get him in the game for a few minutes here and there. However, I don't look for that any time soon.
