Men's basketball: Freshman meets eligibility requirements to join Ohio State
By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch Friday December 2, 2011 6:01 AM
LaQuinton Ross will return to the Ohio State men?s basketball team next week after the NCAA notified OSU last night that it has granted initial eligibility to the 6-foot-8 freshman from Jackson, Miss.
Ross' score on an SAT he took Nov. 5, combined with his core-course grade-point average from four years of high school, were sufficient for eligibility, said Wilson Arroyo, his coach the past two seasons at Life Center Academy in Burlington, N.J. His previous combination had not been.
Ross enrolled in classes at Ohio State in June and participated in summer conditioning with his teammates before being denied eligibility in late September. He can rejoin the team Dec. 9, the day after the end of fall quarter.
"We are excited to get LaQuinton back," coach Thad Matta said in a text message. "I don?t have a timetable for when he will be ready to compete. A lot will depend on what he has done while away and how quickly he picks things up...

Oh8ch;2054811; said:All due respect to Diebler (who will always be one of my favorite Buckeyes) but from the athleticism I have seen of Ross in clips and the extra 2" he brings to the court, he will have an easier time getting his shot off than most. And when Diebler was here we never had the offensive options we have now. Ross may well see some wide open looks on kickbacks from Sully.
The issue with Ross will be how quickly he can pick up the D. He wont see much court time until he does.
And I am still pinching myself. We are discussing the potential this super Frosh might have on the court - with a team that is already among the elites in CBB.
LaQuinton Ross to Join Buckeyes
Matta confirmed Friday that Ross has regained his eligibility and will rejoin the Buckeyes on Dec. 9, the first day after the completion of finals for Ohio State?s fall quarter.
Matta said Ross is unlikely to play at Kansas because he will not have practiced with the team.
Ross did practice with the Buckeyes over the summer, but it was only briefly. Matta said it was the first two practices, and they were really introductory practices.
Aaron Craft said it might be harder to add a guy like Ross to the mix at this point in the season if he hadn't been here all summer. They saw him put in the work, and consider him a part of the team.
Matta said the key for Ross will be how he prepared while he was away.
Matta told him it's important to come in asking what he can do to help the team, not what they can do to help him.
Craft said Ross will not going to come in and change the team completely. He's going to come in and find his niche.
Both Craft and Lenzelle Smith talked about his ability to shoot from long range. Smith said he wants to see Ross in transition because he's long and he can score. Makes smart decisions.
LaQuinton Ross becomes eligible Friday for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He will arrive in Columbus Saturday and will not be with team at Kansas.
