SEC and Big-10 Schools Matched and Compared

Talking the last 25 years. I could give a [Mark May] how many titles were earned back when sloths roamed the earth for the purposes of the comparison.

You and UF are the two highest ranked director's cup programs. We both have huge numbers of alumni. We both had a lot of success in football and basketball recently.

If you like Auburn better, then go for it. I see us as a better fit with tOSU than the others for the reasons I mentioned. If you want more SEC Championships, then Bama or Tennessee or LSU is for you. The overall academic strength, alumni size, noted football stadiums, and overall strength of our athletic departments push me to tOSU as our closet fit.

So what is your pick?

I've thought that there's been a lot of similarity between TSUN and Tennessee lately.

They are both top-10 programs all-time in football, they both went almost 50 years before wining a National Title in the late 90s, and they both recently hired a coach that didn't understand the culture of their program, struggled to win, and brought the attention of NCAA investigators.

Plus, one can produce evidence that Herbstreit is fond of each team. :tongue2:

But I have no interest in trying to force another 11 matchups, although NWern and Vandy is an obvious one.

Sorry, I just threw up in my mouth a little. God, I wish the Big Ten had joined that era's version of the BCS so we could have played those chumps and whipped their ass on the field. And you're damn lucky that a kicked ball with 0 time left on the clock was caught by a diving freshman WR and allowed to send the game at Mizzou into OT.

Not to mention the coaches parting gift to Tom, which might have been as much a part of the vote as the impressive bowl win over Peyton Manning in his last college game.

But hey, it means that TSUN still has the distinction of NEVER having been voted #1 in the Final Coaches poll, so I'm not really upset about it.

It's pretty hard to call those #1 votes a "gift" when we had just finished completely dismantling the #3 team in the country, led by one of the greatest college football QBs of all time while Michigan struggled to beat the #7 team. I think you have your gifts mixed up a smidge.

The AP voters gave 51.5 of their final 70 1st-place votes to TSUN. The coaches went 32-30 in favor of Nebraska, and I suspect that without the aspect of it being Osborne's last game, a couple less votes would've flipped (out of the 24 that did) and Nebraska would've remained #2. When I said "parting gift", I wasn't saying that Nebraska was less deserving than TSUN, I was just referring to the aspect of his departure having an impact on the voting of the fellow coaches.

I'm sure you won't agree with this writer's take, but it was the first place I could find the voting detail in the final polls for that season.

Can you believe the coaches fell for it, all that CBS-produced, soft-focused campaigning for Nebraska? It was Tom Osborne's last game, set to orchestral music--"You've just got to vote him a share of the national title" blah, blah, blah.
Listen, nothing against Nebraska, which beat up pretty good on gimpy-kneed quarterback Peyton Manning and the Tennessee Volunteers, or perhaps you didn't notice how fast able-bodied Tennessee backup quarterback Tee Martin drove his team for a score late in the game.


Once again, the coaches got it wrong.


In Saturday's final poll tallies, 12-0 Michigan captured the Associated Press national championship but, in a dramatic change of bleeding hearts, enough X-and-O men in the coaches' poll changed their votes to award 13-0 Nebraska a share of the crown.


Michigan, with a comfortable lead in both polls entering the bowls, won the AP poll handily, receiving 51 1/2 out of 70 first-place votes.


The coaches' poll was a photo finish, however, with Nebraska narrowly edging Michigan in first-place ballots, 32-30, and in total points, 1,520 to 1,516.


The difference between the polls is degrees of credibility. While the AP makes public the names of its voters, the coaches' poll is anonymous.


Despite Michigan's Rose Bowl victory on Thursday, 24 coaches switched their first-place votes to Nebraska.


Don't we at least deserve to know who they are?


Enough coaches obviously were swayed by outgoing Cornhusker Coach Osborne's impressive 42-17 victory over the Volunteers, which was televised on CBS, employees of which should be awarded national title rings for their invaluable contributions to the Nebraska cause.


It was CBS, desperate to make its game meaningful, which kept up the steady drumbeat for a national-title split during the broadcast, filling voters' minds with interesting if not one-sided propaganda to support Nebraska's case.

Having now lived in Ohio for 5 months, I can confirm with absolute clarity that this is not a religion that's confined to the south.
Midwesterners worship Walmart too - its just that your services are significantly slower and the majority of parishioners complain that southern walmart shoppers do most of their shopping in warmer weather.

Assuming those coaches wanted to vote Michigan #2, that's 6 points Michigan lost. In searching for this article, I found that the final difference was 4 points. If those 2 coaches voted the way they truly felt, Michigan would have won the coaches' poll that year, as well as the AP poll.

I haven't been able to find it, though, and the votes that year were not made public. This post on mgoblog http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/question-re-phil-fulmer-and-1997-vote asks about Phil Fulmer voting Michigan #4, in hopes for some retribution for Manning losing the Heisman vote to Michigan's Woodson. But, as is the case with most internet rumors, there is no evidence.

Plus, we have to admit that there's a chance that some voters may have voted Nebraska lower in hopes that they wouldn't "steal" Michigan's National Championship. It's possible...

With 32 first place votes (worth 25) and 30 second place votes (worth 24), Nebraska got 1520 points. TSUN would have received 1518 votes if they were 2nd on all of the ballots with Nebraska first, so that means they either got two 3rd-place votes or one 4th-place vote. So one or two guys seem to have an agenda, but it didn't affect who was #1.

If only we could have settled it on the field. Then none of this discussion would be necessary.

That article was tl/dr. I've probably read it before, and frankly, it's not going to sway what I saw with my own eyes. Wazoo wasn't even close to the same caliber of opponent as Peyton Manning and Tennessee. The Vols had Manning, Peerless Price and Jamal Turner on offense, Leonard Little, Al Wilson and Terry Fair on defense. Wazzoo had Ryan Leaf and a bunch of nobodies.

Sagarin ranked Nebraska #1 in his final poll, with Michigan a distant fourth behind one-loss FSU and two-loss Florida. Doesn't say much for the writers and their biases, does it?

Michigan is welcome to their little wooden plaque, and they're welcome to claim they won a share of our title. The Big Ten/Pac-10 ducked out of the Bowl Alliance that every other major conference signed on to and cost Michigan a shot at the crystal trophy.
